This research examines the possibility of the US electric utilities' transition from closed to open systems, while taking steps towards new market orientation. By employing an inductive approach, it observes recent developments in two fronts: First, it observes that more renewable energy sources have been added to the power generation mix, and that utilities advertise their renewable energy related efforts through their websites. Second, it looks at the business environment from the perspective of market orientation. For this, the shifts in the business environment were put under the lens of four driving factors: customer support, regulation, competition, and technology. Purpose - The issue affecting US textile/apparel companies in global business competition is to find suitable suppliers for their operations. The selection and evaluation of their global suppliers to meet the goal of having effective and efficient supply chain operations and strengthening their position in the market become critical for US textile/apparel manufacturers to maintain their competitiveness in today's market. Aims to develop an evaluation model. Design/methodology/approach - The development of a simple, flexible, and easy to use evaluation model that includes the consideration of five main clusters to reflect the performance of a global supplier in a textile/apparel supply chain. Findings - A case presented in this paper shows that the model provides textile/apparel companies with an easy way to evaluate their suppliers and make their selection of suppliers more efficient and effective. Most textile/apparel companies using this model can help them establish strategic alliance with global suppliers to reduce costs and increase competitiveness in the market. Practical implications - Textile/apparel companies can use this model to find capable suppliers as their partners in the supply chain. With minor modifications, this model also can help companies in most industries for enhancing their supply chain operations with capable suppliers. Originality/value - Provides a simple model that can help companies in many industries enhance their supply chain operations. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This study embarked on a rigorous examination of the factors driving user satisfaction and usage behavior in the context of telehealth applications. Utilizing a well- structured Google Form survey, distributed through an array of social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Discord, Instagram, and Line, the research gathered 251 responses. The purposive sampling technique was employed to ensure that the data captured the experiences of individuals who had actively engaged with telehealth services. One hypothesis, relating to the influence of Online Reviews, was found to be unsupported. This surprising result suggests that, contrary to expectations, the opinions and reviews shared online do not significantly affect users' satisfaction or their behavioral decisions in the context of telehealth applications. This finding highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of the factors influencing user preferences and choices in this rapidly evolving sector. Conversely, other hypotheses examining factors such as Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Perceived Reliability, Price Value, and Purchase Intention were substantiated. The positive influence of these factors on customer usage behavior underscores their significance in shaping user experiences and satisfaction within the telehealth ecosystem. Furthermore, the study posits that facilitating conditions should be closely aligned with technological advancements, as this alignment is conducive to the development of enhanced application features. This insight suggests that telehealth providers should continuously innovate and integrate advanced technologies to ensure that the facilitating conditions meet the ever-evolving needs and expectations of users. © 2023 IEEE.

Extensive research efforts are currently devoted to developing and improving conventional technologies for water treatment. Membrane-based water treatment technologies are among the most preferred options due to their commercial success, simple operation, low energy and space requirements, and high separation efficiency. Despite the advances made in membrane-based technologies, fouling remains a critical challenge. Fouling occurs upon the accumulation of unwanted impurities on the membrane surface and within the membrane pores which results in a significant decline in the membrane permeate flux. To alleviate the operational challenges from fouling, surface modification to develop antifouling membranes appears to be an effective technique. A comprehensive review of the surface modification techniques for the development of antifouling membranes is provided in this paper. Chemical surface modification techniques (grafting and plasma treatment), physical modification techniques (blending, coating, adsorption, and thermal treatment), and combined physical and chemical modification techniques have been discussed. Moreover, the challenges related to surface modification and the future research directions are addressed.

In recent years, it has become a challenge to improve the recruitment and retention of highly motivated Hispanic and other minority students and to keep their interests active in the engineering discipline until their graduation so that they can join the workforce as professional engineers. The STEM - Minority Outreach and Retention Enhancement program for Transfer and Retention (STEM-MORE-TRP) and the Serving Youth in Science, Technology, engineering, & Mathematics program (SYSTEM) are designed to recruit the engineering students through a number of enrichment activities, including two-week residential engineering Workshops at a major Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in southern Texas. Both STEM-MORE-TRP and SYSTEM introduce participants to several engineering disciplines and allows them to interact with engineering faculty and staff through several activities, including information sessions, field trips, laboratory tours, and design projects. Based on the TRP and SYSTEM curriculum, The engineering, Mathematics, and Physics, Biology and Chemistry departments at a major Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in southern Texas, developed two-week long "Transfer and Retention program (TRP) workshop" and "Summer engineering workshop (SEW) during the summer at the university. Also, this provides the extent of what has worked in achieving the goals set out for the cohort. Both of the platforms funded by the U. S. Department of Education envisioned at transferring and retaining highly motivated Hispanic students into the new Bachelors of Science in systems engineering at the university. The activities were done in three different stages: recruit students and provide the theme of the program, provide a series of enrichment activities, including advising and faculty mentoring, and participation in the workshops at the university. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

The cost of commercial vehicle operation includes fuel, vehicle purchase/replacement/maintenance, and driver/staff,...,etc. Among these costs, fuel is the one that is not only cost-concerned but also environment-concerned. The fuel consumption is highly correlated with the vehicle traveling distance and driving behavior patterns and the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the vehicle operations is one major contributing factor to the greenhouse effect that all human beings are suffering. How to utilize vehicles more efficiently in terms of time and travelling distance and reduce the carbon dioxide emission has become an important issue. Not to mention that many countries/areas have taken acts such as new laws for emission limitations to protect the environment. Advanced technologies such as Global Positioning systems (GPS) can generate the real-time location information of commercial vehicles. These data, analyzed by appropriate data mining technologies, can be used for fleet management systems such as vehicle route planning and driving behavior analysis. In this study, research team cooperating with Taiwan's largest commercial vehicle fleet, Formosa Plastics Transport Corp. (FPTC), deploy GPS-based vehicle tracking and communication systems and apply data mining technologies to develop a new fleet management system that is not only cost-efficient but also environment-friendly. The results include reduced transportation costs, lowered emissions, improved driving behaviors, and a greener fleet.

The evaluation of the performance of information technology and information systems has, over the past three decades, been the object of numerous studies using a wide range of models. Few of them have focused on the study of efficiency, and even fewer still on the development of a specific research model. This paper helps to fill this gap by making a contribution towards formalizing a specific, original theoretical framework and conceptual model, one based on user confidence in ad hoc EDI technology and the risks associated with its use. The model is tested using data obtained from users of a value added network in the car insurance sector. The results of the data analysis, obtained through a series of principal component analysis methods with a Promax rotation and an Amos structural equation analysis, confirm the existence, on the one hand, of an optimal structure of EDI efficiency evaluation factors, and on the other hand, of the relevance of a data model that establishes a hierarchy aimed at explaining risk.

A systematic and practical approach for diversifying a portfolio of fixed-income securities blends forward-looking simulations of the term structure of interest rates with traditional concepts from equity management. The objective is to form a well-diversified portfolio, one that is robust to anticipated changes in interest rates and other uncertainties. To achieve this objective, the dynamic effects must be jointly modeled so that security correlations (comovements) can be estimated. Once a covariance matrix is constructed, traditional methods of portfolio management can be employed. The concepts apply to a wide variety of fixed-income areas, including the high-yield sector and mortgage-backed securities.
