Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used in various industries. The present study focused on the optimization of the configuration of the vertical electric ducted fans (EDFs) of UAVs to enhance the vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) performance of UAVs, improve the configuration of their propulsion system, address the potential risk of exposed propellers, and reduce the space required between the fluid channel and the outlet in horizontal EDFs. A UAV aircraft module with a vertical EDF configuration was designed, following which structural analysis and flow field analysis were conducted using Ansys. The results of these analyses indicate that the overall flow of the designed module is smooth and stable without vortex generation and that the inlet and outlet air velocity performance of this module is excellent. The lift parameters of the rotor groups of the designed module are identical to each other;thus, the flight stability of the UAV in the air can be maintained, and the requirements for optimized design can be met. This study makes two contributions to the literature. First, the structural module of a vertical EDF propulsion system was proposed with an encapsulated impeller set hidden inside the vehicle structure to reduce the risk of propeller exposure. Second, the configuration of vertical EDF compared to the horizontal configuration shortens the airflow channel, which helps to stabilize the wind speed at the outlet, thereby increasing lifting capacity and propulsion efficiency. © 2024 SPIE.

ABET accreditation of undergradute engineering management programs: Established versus new programs - The similarities and differences

ABET accreditation is the established benchmark for undergraduate engineering programs in the United States, yet there are but four accredited undergraduate engineering management programs and one accredited engineering management technology program in the United States. This apparent paradox results from the many elements, characteristics, and factors contributing to successful accreditation. The scarcity of accredited programs is a concern to the engineering management discipline and a question to be dealt with. ABET accredited since 1992, Stevens Institute of Technology presently has a relatively large, well established engineering management (EM) program. Its success is evidenced by the size of its faculty (15 full-time faculty) and external recognition (3 awards from the American Society of engineering management [ASEM] over the past 15 years). The University of the Pacific, by contrast, has a very small engineering management program (1 full-time dedicated faculty) that just received ABET accreditation in 2003. This program also received ASEM's 2004 Founder's Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership for undergraduate programs. This article compares and contrasts the accreditation processes in place at the engineering management programs at Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Pacific. Among the factors considered most central to their accreditation success are the project and people management skills inherent to the discipline of engineering management. These skills provide the basis for a plethora of successful accreditation-focused activities within an EM program. Examples of activities leading toward accreditation and recommendations of how colleges and universities can implement similar processes are discussed.

Risk management frameworks offer excellent tools to identify and manage risks in supply chains. Existing tools can be used to evaluate impacts of countermeasures, however, analysts struggle with modelling how disruptions escalate in complex supply chain systems within a certain amount of time and across several stakeholders. On the contrary, the resilience discipline offers the possibility to understand how a supply chain reacts to disruptions as a function of time. Hence, this paper integrates the concepts of resilience with risk management techniques and develops a risk based resilience assessment framework in a multi-actor context. Further, the framework is operationalized by developing a computer based tool that is tested in case of fruit import in Netherlands. © 2018, © 2018 The Author(s). This paper looks at the significance of bi-directional communication in the Smart Grid and the customer driven microgrid, a basic building block of the smart grid. It presents a classification model of communication requirements from the top down and bottom up perspective. Ultimately this paper presents future areas of work for microgrid operation that can be facilitated by a protocol specifically developed for energy systems and leverage upon IP, the network layer protocol that will provide the broad level of interoperability in the Smart Grid. © 2012 IEEE.

Twitter is currently used as one of the applications that is often used to convey opinions or unrest by the public such as the current issue that is currently rife, namely regarding the increase in fuel oil prices (BBM) in Indonesia. With so much data scattered in a tweet that only consists of a few fragments of words, there must be valuable information or meaning that Twitter users want to convey. Text mining is a very appropriate method to do the analysis because in text mining there is a method that focuses on an opinion which will be concluded into positive and negative opinions. There are several algorithms that are most often used in data mining, namely K-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree, and Naive Bayes. The three algorithms used in this study were also compared with the use of feature selection Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) which is well known for improving the performance of algorithms. There are 2165 negative opinion data and 2835 positive sentiment data. The data will be tried based on distinctive sums of data namely 1000 data, 3000 data, and 5000 data. The classic K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm obtained an accuracy result of 75.60% and made it the best when tested with 1000 data. The use of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proven to improve accuracy as when tested using 3000 data with an accuracy value of 78.21% on the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm. In the mean time, in testing 5000 Data, the classic K-Nearest Neighbor once more gotten the most elevated exactness with a esteem of 74.02%. © 2023 IEEE.

The production and delivery of ready-mixed concrete consist of several activities which expose employees to considerable safety hazards that lead to occupational accidents. The study aimed to determine the significant factors contributing to non-fatal occupational accidents in the ready-mixed concrete industry in Qatar. A total of 84 non-fatal occupational accidents were collected from a ready-mixed concrete company in Qatar. A coding scheme was developed based on available literature and the company's existing classification to analyze each accident in terms of employee, injury, and accident characteristics. Cross-tabulation analysis was used to determine the associations between categorical factors. Frequency distribution showed that regular employees aged between 25 and 44 years old were mostly involved in accidents, with hand/arm and leg/foot being mostly injured. The most common accident types were struck by an object (44%), slip, trip or fall on the same level (23.8%), and caught in between objects (17.9%). The majority of work-related accidents (71%) could be attributed to unsafe behavior, particularly due to improper use of PPE. Strong significant associations were observed between activity type and accident root cause, as well as injured body type and accident root cause. The significant factors contributing to non-fatal occupational accidents were determined through the study. The insights obtained from this study could be used by the company in designing a comprehensive safety management program with the goal of driving occupational injuries to a lower level. © 2022 IEEE.

Delivering a high service quality under the safety protocol of COVID-19 is very essential for the sustainable airport operations. The study was intended to determine the impact of COVID-19 on Airport Service Quality (ASQ), customer satisfaction, and travel intention by utilizing a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. A total of 517 Filipinos voluntarily answered an online questionnaire that consists of 92 questions. SEM indicated that the security check, terminal facilities, and services had significant effects on perceived value which subsequently led to customer satisfaction. In addition, travel safety measures had direct effects on Filipinos' travel intention and customer satisfaction. Interestingly, service innovations had no significant impact on customer satisfaction but directly affected travel intention. By understanding the relationship between these factors, airport management could have better decision-making while efficiently and effectively utilizing the resources in these times of uncertainty. © 2022 IEEE.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are required to respond to changes and conform to stringent safety laws and regulations. This study aimed to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the organizational commitment among employees in the semiconductor industry. A total of 272 employees working in the semiconductor industry answered a self-administered questionnaire that considered 51 questions, distributed online. Utilizing Structural equation modeling (SEM), the results showed that the COVID-19 was found to have a significant direct effect on employees' perceived job outcomes (PO) and a negative direct effect on job demands (JD). Moreover, PO had a positive effect on job motivation (JM) and job satisfaction (JS). Subsequently, JM presented a significant positive direct effect on JS, while JD showed a negative effect on JS. Lastly, JS showed a significant positive direct effect on organizational commitment (OC). Intriguingly, an indirect effect of PO on JS was seen. This study is one of the first studies that analyzed the organization commitment among semiconductor workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper could be utilized as a foundation to enhance organizational commitment, particularly in the semiconductor industry worldwide. © 2022 IEEE.

We consider a supply chain, which consists of N stocking locations and one supplier. The locations may be coordinated through replenishment strategies and lateral transshipments, i.e., transfer of a product among locations at the same echelon level. The supplier has limited production capacity. Therefore, the total amount of product supplied to the N locations is limited in each time period. When total replenishment orders exceed total supply, not all locations will be able to attain their base stock values. Therefore, different allocation rules are considered to specify how the supplier rations its limited capacity among the locations. We team up the modeling flexibility of simulation with sample path optimization to address the multilocation transshipment problem. We solve the sample average approximation problem by random search and by gradient search. With this numerical approach, we can study problems with non-identical costs and correlated demand structures. ©2009 IEEE.

Colleges and universities are continually making efforts to incorporate computers and technology into the varied aspects of their teaching environments. However, it is difficult to distinguish the effectiveness of these machine tutors from their human counterparts. There has been much debate about technology-based instructional strategies in learning environments. This article addresses one issue of that debate -the effectiveness of teaching undergraduate engineering students using computer-mediated tutorials versus traditional lecturing. Specifically, this research compared student test scores using computer-mediated accounting tutorials alone with those of students who received traditional lectures and computer-mediated tutorials on the same topic. Statistical analyses were performed to determine which was a better instructional method. Based on previous research by the authors and other published research, it was hypothesized that both methods would be satisfactory instructional tools and yield similar educational results. The results indicate that there was no statistically significant difference between the two methods. This was consistent with previous studies. This study concludes that computer-mediated tutorials could be substituted for traditional lectures without impacting what a student learns - at least for teaching accounting fundamentals.
