The recent Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) sets ambitious goals but no clear pathway for how zero loss of important biodiversity areas and halting human-induced extinction of threatened species will be achieved. We assembled a multi-taxa tracking dataset (11 million geopositions from 15,845 tracked individuals across 121 species) to provide a global assessment of space use of highly mobile marine megafauna, showing that 63% of the area that they cover is used 80% of the time as important migratory corridors or residence areas. The GBF 30% threshold (Target 3) will be insufficient for marine megafauna’s effective conservation, leaving important areas exposed to major anthropogenic threats. Coupling area protection with mitigation strategies (e.g., fishing regulation, wildlife-traffic separation) will be essential to reach international goals and conserve biodiversity.

About a decade ago, a movement was started at Stevens Institute of Technology to infuse the Capstone experience with systems engineering (SE) and engineering management (EM) knowledge. However the discipline specific Senior Design advisors did not have the time to teach, nor the in-depth awareness of, SE and EM topics to be able to provide their students with substantive learning on these subjects. A course soon emerged that would run along side the Senior Capstone Design course, to provide knowledge in these areas. The course exists in two formats. One format has been running for years as a traditional 3-credit, one semester course. The other format was implemented recently as a pilot to provide just-in-time learning over both semesters of senior design. Both formats have been running concurrently for three years. This article will address how the needs of the Senior Design Advisors from the various disciplines were married to systems engineering and engineering management topics and deliverables to create two versions of a course to improve the overall functionality of all Capstone design teams, as well as, their project's final outcome. To conclude, the benefits/disbenefits and success/lack of success of the two different formats is highlighted. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. This study quantifies the impact of variations in the aromatic content of F-24 fuel on the combustion and performance of a turbocharged, direct-injection aviation diesel engine. The engine used in the study was a multi-cylinder, 4-stroke diesel engine, intended for use in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Four fuel blends meeting the MIL-DTL-83133J standards for F-24 were specially prepared for the study. The cetane number, heating value, and other fuel properties were maintained within a very narrow range, while only the aromatic content was varied, from 4 to 24%, by volume. Using each fuel, the engine was operated at a series of standard sea level operating conditions from idle to full power takeoff. The engine was controlled using the manufacturer's original engine control unit, fuel map, and calibration. Combustion and performance properties of the engine were measured and analyzed using each fuel, at each engine operating condition. In switching between the four fuels, the impact on combustion properties was found to be small, but non-negligible. However, there was no apparent trend resulting from increasing the aromatic content. Engine performance properties such as power, torque, and fuel consumption were found to be largely unaffected by changing the aromatic content.

Summary Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood *** We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, to estimate posterior distributions of diarrhoea prevalence, incidence, and mortality from 2000 to 2017. From these data, we estimated the burden of diarrhoea at varying subnational levels (termed units) by spatially aggregating draws, and we investigated the drivers of subnational patterns by creating aggregated risk factor *** The greatest declines in diarrhoeal mortality were seen in south and southeast Asia and South America, where 54·0% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 38·1-65·8), 17·4% (7·7-28·4), and 59·5% (34·2-86·9) of units, respectively, recorded decreases in deaths from diarrhoea greater than 10%. Although children in much of Africa remain at high risk of death due to diarrhoea, regions with the most deaths were outside Africa, with the highest mortality units located in Pakistan. Indonesia showed the greatest within-country geographical inequality; some regions had mortality rates nearly four times the average country rate. Reductions in mortality were correlated to improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) or reductions in child growth failure (CGF). System users have been a demonstrated source of innovations and breakthrough ideas. While there is a wealth of literature dedicated to understanding this source of innovation for its ability to generate new markets;understanding how users design and change systems remains understudied. As an initial step, this research seeks to understand problem solving mechanisms employed by users. To observe this phenomenon, this initial research considers an extreme case of user design, the development of a complex system. Three categories of change mechanisms were employed by users: user, method and material. As a departure from traditional design methods it was found that users view themselves as a dynamic component of the system and change themselves or their behaviors to enable system capabilities. In the case considered, users were able to rapidly develop a complex system to meet new requirements;interestingly this was accomplished with either modular or minimally invasive equipment changes. While traditional flexible design tenets were present in the materiel components of the system (e.g. robustness and modularity), the skill and capacity of the system users provided a separate source of system flexibility. © American Society for engineering management, 2015.
