Group purchasing (GP) is a procurement strategy that can be deployed by businesses for purchasing raw materials for less by benefiting from economies of scale in purchasing through consolidation of their demands. In this study the effect of establishing longer term buying relations (as opposed to single term or period) between the GP agent and the buyers on the procurement cost is investigated. In a long-term relationship setting, the buyers share demand information over a planning horizon with the GP agent, and are willing to take part in GP during this planning horizon. In lack of a long-term relationship, customers will make GP decisions in each period while in the longer term relationship case they will have a GP decision for multiple periods over the planning horizon in the presence of inventory holding. Mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models are developed to handle single period and long-term cases, and to compare the cost performance. An experimental analysis is presented to test the models under different inventory cost scenarios.

Included in the mission statement at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point is the requirement to produce individuals who are certified in character (honor). Each department at USMA has an overarching responsibility to build character or facilitate character development. At USMA, we want each graduate's character to be "marked" with the values of West Point and the Army ethic. Thus, each department must establish a thoughtful character development model that describes what actions are necessary and periodically assess the strategy's effectiveness. Included in this model will be five character development activities that utilize the guidelines and character development model to integrate character development into existing activities. The purpose of this research is to develop and articulate the strategy and activities for the Department of systems engineering (DSE). Using the Stanford d School Design Thinking Methodology we define the problem using empathy, develop an unexpected range of possible solutions, and create rough prototypes that will be implemented with the DSE. With this methodology we move toward action, reflect on the process and run through the cycles bringing stronger insights and more unexpected solutions. © American Society for engineering management, 2015.

Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Accelerated testing of microelectronics products and/or specially designed test vehicles may be useless or worse unless the results can be counted on to somehow reflect performance in service. This is obviously the case when it comes to the quantitative assessment of life in long term service. However, it is also important for so-called `engineering tests' intended to compare alternative materials, designs or processes or to compare a product to previous `similar' ones. As far as lead free solder joints are concerned this is more often an issue than commonly recognized. In fact current specs requiring assemblies to pass, for example, a certain number of cycles in a particular test are not necessarily meaningful in the many cases where acceleration factors to realistic service conditions cannot be assumed to be similar for the different solder joints. In general, reliability engineers need to know when `best in test' is unlikely to mean `best in service', how large deviations may be, and which comparisons can be counted on to be conservative. This includes cases where acceleration factors vary with solder volume, pad sizes, pad finishes or process parameters. A mechanistically justified model for the fatigue of lead free solder joints does allow for the generalization of observed trends and should be considered when formulating test protocols and guidelines. Another concern is the effects of the ongoing variations in cycling amplitude common under realistic service conditions. These are not appropriately accounted for in accelerated test protocols. A dependence of the effects on the solder alloy suggests that the sensitivity to these will vary with assembly process parameters and subsequent thermal history as well. The behavior is explained by the effects of cycling on the deformation properties of the solder joints, and recommendations can be made with respect to reliability assessment/optimization and Environmental Stress Screening (ESS). The engineering profession has clearly embraced the importance of ethical behavior among students and working professional engineers. The prevalence of unethical behaviors, such as plagiarism, among college students has increased significantly in the past 30 years10. Research suggests that science and technology students have the highest levels of cheating including plagiarism10. University educators often debate whether plagiarism is committed willfully or unintentionally out of ignorance and research investigating this area appears equivocal. Therefore, we sought to investigate first-semester freshmen engineering students' understanding of plagiarism at a science and technology university. Nearly 1,100 first year engineering students at a Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) completed an online survey and corresponding quiz designed to assess their understanding of plagiarism, and a self-report measure of their perceived academic integrity. The vast majority of students were recent high school graduates from the United States. Males outnumbered female students, as is the case in the freshmen engineering class and student body at the university and across the country. Participants rated themselves as 5.5 on a 7-point Likert scale of ethical behavior (0 = "not at all ethical" and 7 = "extremely ethical"). Only 5.2% of participants rated themselves below the mid-point on the ethical behavior scale. Additionally, approximately 93% reported having previous training or educational experience about cheating, plagiarism, and/or student misconduct. Three items on the survey provided a passage and then specifically assessed students' ability to determine whether a sentence related to the passage was plagiarized. Response options included "yes", "no", and "I don't know". For the three questions;60%, 38%, and 87%;respectively, selected the correct answer. Species' traits and environmental conditions determine the abundance of tree species across the globe. The extent to which traits of dominant and rare tree species differ remains untested across a broad environmental range, limiting our understanding of how species traits and the environment shape forest functional composition. We use a global dataset of tree composition of >22,000 forest plots and 11 traits of 1663 tree species to ask how locally dominant and rare species differ in their trait values, and how these differences are driven by climatic gradients in temperature and water availability in forest biomes across the globe. We find three consistent trait differences between locally dominant and rare species across all biomes; dominant species are taller, have softer wood and higher loading on the multivariate stem strategy axis (related to narrow tracheids and thick bark). The difference between traits of dominant and rare species is more strongly driven by temperature compared to water availability, as temperature might affect a larger number of traits. Therefore, climate change driven global temperature rise may have a strong effect on trait differences between dominant and rare tree species and may lead to changes in species abundances and therefore strong community reassembly.

Aim The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial, marine, freshwater and subterranean). Location Worldwide, 12,343 sites, all ecosystem types. Time Period 1991 to present. Major Taxa Studied All soniferous taxa. Methods We synthesise sampling coverage across spatial, temporal and ecological scales using metadata describing sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa and audio recording parameters. We explore global trends in biological, anthropogenic and geophysical sounds based on 168 selected recordings from 12 ecosystems across all realms. Results Terrestrial sampling is spatially denser (46 sites per million square kilometre—Mkm 2 ) than aquatic sampling (0.3 and 1.8 sites/Mkm 2 in oceans and fresh water) with only two subterranean datasets. Although diel and lunar cycles are well sampled across realms, only marine datasets (55%) comprehensively sample all seasons. Across the 12 ecosystems selected for exploring global acoustic trends, biological sounds showed contrasting diel patterns across ecosystems, declined with distance from the Equator, and were negatively correlated with anthropogenic sounds. Main Conclusions PAM can inform macroecological studies as well as global conservation and phenology syntheses, but representation can be improved by expanding terrestrial taxonomic scope, sampling coverage in the high seas and subterranean ecosystems, and spatio-temporal replication in freshwater habitats. Proper supplier selection is very critical because a significant proportion of income is allocated for and spent on purchased items. This paper presents a supplier selection model for oil and gas projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This model is designed to guide users in selecting the most suitable supplier. The supplier selection decision is based on several criteria. The proposed model consists of five stages: item selection, initial supplier selection, selection criteria, supplier evaluation, and selection decision. It allows the decision makers to select the most suitable supplier to execute the job. Decision makers can evaluate the results based on the suppliers' ranking and the sensitivity of the case. A real case study is presented to demonstrate the application of the model. ©Civil-Comp Press, 2015.

Recently, an optimization metaheuristic paradigm based intelligent behavior of crows called crow search algorithm (CSA) has been proposed. To enhance the performance of the standard CSA algorithm, this paper proposes to tune the control parameters using population diversity information and Gaussian distribution. Loney's solenoid benchmark problem is used to examine the effectiveness of the conventional CSA and the proposed modified CSA.
