A Comparison of Software Defined Network (SDN) Implementation Strategies

Software defined networking (SDN) is an emerging approach to handle data forwarding and control separately. The notion of programmability has central importance in SDN. Two implementation strategies; proprietary and open source, are shaping the trends of the adoptability of SDN by major hardware manufacturers. A group of leading vendors believes that loose coupling between the logical and physical layers of a network hinders the proper provision of physical resources and suggests a proprietary fix to this problem. The other group regards the notion of openness as s key feature of SDN. This paper compares and contrasts these two implementation strategies of SDN by identifying their respective operating principles, features of the product lines, and weakness and strengths.

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive review of the tools and metrics for the quantification and assessment of water footprints, and allowing for the opportunity for open discussion on the challenges and future of water footprinting methodology, an international symposium on water footprint was organized. The Water Footprint Symposium was held in December 2013 at the University of Leeds, UK. In particular, four areas were highlighted for discussion: water footprint and agriculture, quantification of water footprint, industrial water footprint, and from theory to practice. Discussion was organized to focus on the "prioritization of water footprint research & applications to practical sectors". The concept of water footprinting has helped to better communicate water management and assessment among different research and user communities. Significant research progress has been made in the relations between water footprint and agriculture, quantification of water footprint, industrial water footprint, and the transition from theory to practice. Future water footprint research needs to further enhance assessment accuracy, improve sustainability assessment methodology, develop databases, address uncertainties, and prioritize application by government and in practical sectors. We address the challenging problem of optimizing building design to minimize lighting loads, which is one of the two largest sources of energy consumption in buildings, besides thermal (heating and cooling) loads. Judiciously designed building envelopes, which employ daylight harvesting characteristics, can reduce these loads by 50%. Robust and validated lighting tools exist for the performance evaluation of building designs;however, they are not commonly used to explore the performance of many design alternatives. In practice, their use is often limited to validating one or several designs. Building design optimization programs have been developed;however, most of these tools focus exclusively on the optimization of envelope thermal loads or use simple, outdated lighting evaluation methods. The inclusion of rigorous holistic lighting performance evaluation for optimization is important because lighting energy represents about 40% of the total electricity used by commercial buildings. We present a new methodology, using state-of-the-art dynamic climate-based lighting simulations and the COMPLEX Method of Constrained Optimization, to optimize building design for daylighting performance. The results indicate that the design space region of optimum performance can be found quickly, but converge is sometimes slow.

This research examines the possibility of the US electric utilities' transition from closed to open systems, while taking steps towards new market orientation. By employing an inductive approach, it observes recent developments in two fronts: First, it observes that more renewable energy sources have been added to the power generation mix, and that utilities advertise their renewable energy related efforts through their websites. Second, it looks at the business environment from the perspective of market orientation. For this, the shifts in the business environment were put under the lens of four driving factors: customer support, regulation, competition, and technology. A pickup and delivery vehicle routing problem from a real-world bottled-beverage distribution company is addressed. The problem consists of deciding how to load every trailer, how to configure the vehicles in terms of the trailers, and how to route the vehicles, so as to minimize routing and fixed costs. The problem includes several features such as time windows on both customers and vehicles, multiple depots, multiple product delivery, split delivery, heterogeneous fleet, and dock capacity, to name a few. To solve this problem a GRASP-based heuristic is proposed. Problem decomposition, vehicle composition and route construction mechanisms, and local search procedures for different types of neighborhoods are developed. The heuristic is empirically assessed over a wide set of instances. Empirical results show that the proposed method obtains solutions of better quality than those reported by the company. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In recent years, many design approaches have been developed for automated manufacturing systems in the fields of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS), holonic manufacturing systems (HMS), and multi-agent systems (MAS). One of the principle reasons for these developments has been to enhance the recongurability of a manufacturing system;allowing it to readily adapt to changes over time. However, to date, recongurability assessment has been limited. Hence, the efficacy of these design approaches remains quantitatively inconclusive. More recently, a systematic approach to reconfigurability measurement based upon the concepts of reconfiguration "potential" and reconfiguration "ease" has been developed using axiomatic design and design structure matrices respectively. The measures of reconfiguration potential called production degrees of freedom were specifically used to calculate production paths of a product line through a reconfigurable manufacturing system. This paper rearticulates the previous scalar-based calculation in terms of a axiomatic design matrix-based development founded in graph theory for three major benefits. First, this approach establishes a link between the RMS literature and graph theory where path enumeration has long been associated with network reliability and resilience. Second, the approach bases its measures strictly on the evolving system architecture variables in both function and form. In so doing, it roots itself in the established engineering design concept of the axiomatic design knowledge base for large flexible systems. Finally, the formulaic expressions lend themselves to significant computational savings.

Revenues and profits from short life cycle products will depend upon careful formulation and execution of production plans in response to demands in the marketplace. This research contributes to the development of the production and inventory build-up strategies for short life cycle products under different demand-supply scenarios. A modified Bass diffusion model is used to characterise the product demand pattern with consideration of demand-sales interaction. We develop cost models based on production costs, inventory carrying costs, backlog costs, and cost of lost sales for a number of different production scenarios. The optimal production rate is obtained by minimising the total cost. We also investigate the benefit of an initial build-up of inventory before the product's sales period starts. © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
