The use of web-based technology for educational purposes has been increasingly popular within the past decade. With latest developments in technology, especially video and audio capabilities, web-based education is now within reach of anyone who has an internet connection. engineering management (EM) departments have increasingly been adopting online learning tools within their degree programs. In this paper, the authors present the current state of online EM education based on research on EM degrees awarded. We categorize synchronous versus asynchronous course content and web-based delivery methods to identify trends. It is hoped that the results of this research will be beneficial for both students and faculty who wish to actively participate, and improve their online learning and teaching experiences.

This paper describes a detailed, discrete-event, micro-simulation study of an inner-city personal rapid transit (PRT) system, for the purpose of evaluating the capacity of such a system and the effect of various parameters on this capacity. While former studies considered various parameters, most considered only a partial set of the overall set of parameters considered by this paper. In many cases these parameters were treated differently from the model proposed here, which thus provides valuable insights for future research. This evaluation is crucial for justifying construction of such a system, and for judging its feasibility and may provide an initial step towards creating a PRT manual, similar to the Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual (TCQSM). The complex operation and structure of the problem suggests micro-simulation as a viable tool for this study. This necessitates tailoring a solution using general simulation software rather than a transportation-oriented tool. The simulation evaluated the capacity under three major scenarios related to passenger arrival characteristics. The results show that the capacity is not sensitive to pod velocity, nor to acceleration/deceleration rates, but is sensitive to the number of pods and suggests an optimal pod quantity.

The required configuration management and the necessary control of the Surface Ship Combat System elements demand that they be considered as integrated and tested in accordance with an integrated test plan utilizing an integrated test organization. The sometimes used approach of implementing a combat system test program based upon the individual combat system elements being independent, has proven to be less than satisfactory. Then is no question that some of the early testing at the unit, subsystem, and subprogram levels can be planned and conducted independent of a specific “end-item” combat System. This paper addresses the planning and implementing of combat system test with the emphases being upon the integrated phase of test and primarily the lead ship of a class. Information is presented to facilitate planning and implementing a combat system test program including use of shore facilities and integrating these activities with shipboard activities; when to form the test organization and what types of expertise are required; what are the key technical management tools; the proofing of test documentation; the need for detailed “step-by-step” procedures and traceability of the specified requirements; how to assist Ships Force; planning and stat using the conduct of the tests; integrating computer program and special testing into the test program; and the significance of early decisions on administrative and contractual arrangements.

The need for a 5-dimensional (5D) integrated database capability for aviation weather applications to reduce weather disruptions and increase the safety and efficiency of operations within the air and space transportation system has been articulated by the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO). JPDO is an interagency organization that is jointly managed by NASA and FAA. The implementation of a 5D Weather Data Base will improve the accuracy and precision for measuring current conditions and producing meteorological forecasts. This paper develops an integrated system-level model of the weather database and discusses the network structure that will be used in next generation air and space transportation systems.

In recent years, the development of a green supply chain model that takes sustainability into consideration has become an urgent issue in corporate management and policy operation. For example, in the fashion industry, the proper circulation of not only used items purchased by consumers, but also unsold items generated in retail stores is one of the most important issues. In this study, we examine a supply chain model for the appropriate circulation of unsold new products from retail outlets. Specifically, we considered a supply chain model in which a retailer’s inventory is divided into two states under stochastic demand fluctuations: new and old items, and the unsold old items are collected and reproduced by a manufacturer. By formulating this model as a Markov decision process, the optimal decisions regarding the retailer’s ordering policy and the retail price and the manufacturer’s wholesale price are obtained. Optimal investment and appropriate institutional design to reduce CO2 emissions generated in a supply chain are also considered. Specifically, we examine the decision of green investment in manufacturing technology to reduce CO2 emissions when a manufacturer produce items. And we examine the design of a carbon tax system to control CO2 emissions. Sensitivity analysis on the carbon tax system shows that raising the carbon tax rate increases the optimal retail price, the optimal wholesale price, and the optimal green investment. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

This article is a summary of an interpretive-systemic study of the University of Los Andes in Venezuela. Following the methodological guidelines of interpretive systemology, three interpretive contextual systems were designed in order to "comprehend" the sense of the university. These three interpretive contexts were derived from possible different interpretations of the University Law (Statutes). Results obtained from the "thematic interpretation" of university activities and decision taking reveal an institution removed from any of the missions depicted in the interpretive contexts. A fourth interpretive context was designed to provide an interpretation of the regulative role the institution plays in order to maintain a particular social order and power structure. This fourth interpretive context shows greater interpretive power with regard to actual university activities than the other three. © 1991 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

The effort to incorporate ethics concepts into engineering curriculum in higher education has increased over the last several years. The engineering ABET Criteria includes understanding professional and ethical responsibilities. There has been increased funding from the National Science Foundation to develop ethics courses, incorporate ethics modules within existing engineering courses and develop discipline-specific ethics cases. In a search of the ethics literature and the ASEE engineering Case program, there were few industrial engineering or engineering management related cases found that could be incorporated as ethics modules across the curriculum. This paper will provide an approach to incorporate ethics cases as modules across an industrial engineering and engineering management curriculum and related courses. This paper describes the proposed project objectives, a methodology for developing engineering ethics modules and engineering conceptbased cases, as well a description of the project deliverables, the approach to disseminate the case modules, and the project evaluation and assessment approach to ensure that the project objectives are successfully met.

An e-Commerce company has been using an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for several years, but is still constrained in its implementation, this is reflected in the number of issue/change request tickets submitted by users who have not been able to reach ideal conditions. To overcome this problem, we need an appropriate reference model, the ERP system user acceptance model in companies. The study conducted factors that influence the level of acceptance of SAP ERP users in the XYZ group to then determine a model that is able to explain practically the level of ERP system user acceptance, which in turn can produce concrete proposals to increase ERP system user acceptance. Research is quantitative descriptive using factor analysis and regression analysis methods. The research method uses a questionnaire with a total of 107 valid respondents coming from 8 company names under the XYZ group in 6 Southeast Asian countries. The conclusion of the study is that there are 24 indicators and 4 factors that influence user acceptance of the SAP ERP system. These four factors are the low contribution of the ERP system, the quality of ERP systems and data, the development of ERP systems, and also the low quality of ERP system supporters. It is hoped that by optimizing the value of the 4 factors, the XYZ group can increase user acceptance of the SAP ERP system so that the system can provide benefits expected by the company to be competitive advantage. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

There are significant Points of Intersection and Overlaps between Project / program Managers (PMs) and the Chief systems Engineer (CSE) / systems Engineers (SE). In some projects, the PM is the Technical Lead, or the CSE is the PM, regardless of Role, the project leader is responsible for project success through adherence to the "Golden Triangle". However, if Roles and Responsibilities are not clearly defined early in the project lifecycle when both professions are present, this can lead to unproductive tensions between PMs and the CSE that can be an impediment to project / program performance. Key sources of unproductive tensions are the lack of integrated planning, lack of or unclear communications, unclear definition roles and authority, and conflicting practices between the two overlapping roles. We address relevant causes of unproductive tensions, highlight the importance of collaboration between project management and systems engineering, describe the points of intersection and overlaps in the core competencies between the disciplines, as described by their respective profession organizations (PMI & INCOSE), and explore the Overlaps between the educational curricula for an M.S. in Project management and an M.S. in systems engineering. We then suggest promising practices for enhancing effective integration between the two disciplines with the aim of improving project and program performance. © 2017 PICMET.
