We performed mitogenome analysis of Japanese fireflyLuciola cruciata(Coleoptera: Lampyridae), which is unique species in Japan. It is classified into six haplotypes based on the difference of COII sequence on mitochondrial DNA. The complete mitogenome sequence of Tohoku group has been registered so far, we newly analysed West Japan groups which belong to different haplotype. The total length of analysed mitogenome was 15,990 bp, being one base longer than the case of Tohoku’s firefly. The base substitution was found at 273 positions over the whole mitochondrial sequence, while amino acid substitution accompanying it was observed at only 11 positions.

With the advent of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), SaaS developers are facing many challenges associated with the multi-tenancy and the dramatically increased number of users. In order to achieve resource-optimized, on-demand dynamic scaling across multiple tenants, and reduce costs, in this paper, a new platform, named SmartVM, is created to enable SaaS developer to create, customize, and deploy SaaS solutions in a multi-tier microservice-based manner. We develop an e-commerce SaaS prototype to evaluate effectiveness and efficiency of SmartVM. The results show that the SmartVM deployments outperforms the conventional monolithic and microservice deployments in smart monitoring, cost reduction, and resource optimization.

In this paper, we present the analysis and results of a direct measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum with the CALET instrument onboard the International Space Station, including the detailed assessment of systematic uncertainties. The observation period used in this analysis is from October 13, 2015 to August 31, 2018 (1054 days). We have achieved the very wide energy range necessary to carry out measurements of the spectrum from 50 GeV to 10 TeV covering, for the first time in space, with a single instrument the whole energy interval previously investigated in most cases in separate subranges by magnetic spectrometers (BESS-TeV, PAMELA, and AMS-02) and calorimetric instruments (ATIC, CREAM, and NUCLEON). The observed spectrum is consistent with AMS-02 but extends to nearly an order of magnitude higher energy, showing a very smooth transition of the power-law spectral index from −2.81±0.03 (50–500 GeV) neglecting solar modulation effects (or −2.87±0.06 including solar modulation effects in the lower energy region) to −2.56±0.04 (1–10 TeV), thereby confirming the existence of spectral hardening and providing evidence of a deviation from a single power law by more than 3σ.

Hypokinetic dysarthria is one of the core symptoms of Parkinson's disease, characterized by reduced loudness, slurred speech and distorted consonant productions. Dopaminergic medication for Parkinson's disease (PD) has been proven to be effective in treating limb and gross motor movement problems. However, the literature sees contradictory findings regarding dopaminergic effects on speech problems associated with PD. Previous perceptual and acoustic studies of PD hypokinetic dysarthria mostly involved heterogeneous population and variations of speech tasks which complicated data interpretation. Also, the lack of kinematic data limited our understanding of the details of articulation errors associated with PD, as well as the medication effects. Electromagnetic articulography (EMA) enabled the examination of PD articulatory patterns with high degree of accuracy and safety. The aim of the present study was to address these inconsistencies by providing an integrative description of basic kinematic and acoustic parameters of speech production about the dopaminergic effect on early PD speech by using EMA. The results revealed a significant improvement of articulatory function on dopaminergic effects for PD speech, evidenced by increased vowel space, the velocity and accelerated velocity initiation and coordination of articulation during bilabial or alveolar productions.

We consider the lattice, L, of all subsets of a multidimensional contingency table and establish the properties of monotonicity and supermodularity for the marginalization function, n(·), on L. We derive from the supermodularity of n(·) some generalized Fréchet inequalities complementing and extending inequalities of Dobra and Fienberg. Further, we construct new monotonic and supermodular functions from n(·), and we remark on the connection between supermodularity and some correlation inequalities for probability distributions on lattices. In this work, we present a method for automatic topic classification of educational videos using a speech transcript transform. Our method works as follows: First, speech recognition is used to generate video transcripts. Then, the transcripts are converted into images using a statistical cooccurrence transformation that we designed. Finally, a classifier is used to produce video category labels for a transcript image input. For our classifiers, we report results using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a principal component analysis (PCA) model. In order to evaluate our method, we used the Khan Academy on a Stick dataset that contains 2,545 videos, where each video is labeled with one or two of 13 categories. Experiments show that our method is effective and strongly competitive against other supervised learning-based methods.

Prediction in social networks attracts more and more attentions since social networks have become an important part of people’s lives. Although a few topic or event prediction models have been proposed in the past few years, researches that focus on the single tweet prediction just emerge recently. In this paper, we propose STH-Bass, a Spatial and Temporal Heterogeneous Bass model derived from economic field, to predict the popularity of a single tweet. Leveraging only the first day’s information after a tweet is posted, STH-Bass can not only predict the trend of a tweet with favorite count and retweet count, but also classify whether the tweet will be popular in the future. We perform extensive experiments to evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of STHBass based on real-world Twitter data. The evaluation results show that STH-Bass obtains much less APE than the baselines when predicting the trend of a single tweet, and an average of 24% higher precision when classifying the tweets popularity. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

A unified scheme to accelerate adaptive cubic regularization and gradient methods for convex optimization

In this paper we propose a unified two-phase scheme for convex optimization to accelerate: (1) the adaptive cubic regularization methods with exact/inexact Hessian matrices, and (2) the adaptive gradient method, without any knowledge of the Lipschitz constants for the gradient or the Hessian. This is achieved by tuning the parameters used in the algorithm adaptively in its process of progression, which can be viewed as a relaxation over the existing algorithms in the literature. Under the assumption that the sub-problems can be solved approximately, we establish overall iteration complexity bounds for three newly proposed algorithms to obtain an ϵ-optimal solution. Specifically, we show that the adaptive cubic regularization methods with the exact/inexact Hessian matrix both achieve an iteration complexity in the order of O(1/ϵ 1/3), which matches that of the original accel-erated cubic regularization method presented in [24] assuming the availability of the exact Hessian information and the Lipschitz constants, and the global solution of the sub-problems. Under the same two-phase adaptive acceleration framework, the gradient method achieves an iteration complexity in the order of O(1/ϵ 1/2), which is known to be best possible (cf. [26]). Our numerical experiment results show a clear effect of acceleration displayed in the adaptive Newton's method with cubic regularization on a set of regularized logistic regression instances. Internet users spend most of their time reading and using web pages. Because of the reason there is a high demand for the user browsing experience to be pleasant. Experiments show that when people look at objects, the first impression that causes visual response is the color of the object. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore how web color schemes affect user behavior. This paper presents a framework that can automatically recolor the web pages based on reference palettes. Moreover, it analyzes and explores the effect of web color schemes on user behavior through a series of user studies. The preliminary experimental results show that the color scheme has a statistically significant effect on user preferences. The other factors include gender and hearing capability.
