Background subtraction is widely used as an effective method for detecting moving objects in a video image. However, background subtraction requires a prerequisite in that image variation cannot be observed, and the r...

Sensor Web observing systems may have the potential to significantly improve our ability to monitor, understand, and predict the evolution of rapidly evolving, transient, or variable environmental features and events. This improvement will come about by integrating novel data collection techniques, new improved instruments, emerging communications technologies, and interoperable planning and scheduling systems. In contrast with today's observing systems, "event-driven" sensor webs will synthesize near-real time measurements and information from other platforms and then reconfigure themselves to invoke new measurement modes and adaptive observation strategies. Meteorological prediction models may also serve to initiate new measurement modes (e.g., higher spatial, temporal resolution) or to target observations to specific regions. These "model-driven" sensor webs will complement event-driven measurements. Platforms will be tasked to target measurements within specific areas where sensitivity to initial conditions may cause ensemble forecasts to diverge when predicting the future state of atmospheric features (e.g., hurricane track) or when discriminating subtle yet critical differences in atmospheric states (e.g., winter precipitation type and location). The targeted measurements would then be assimilated to establish new initial conditions. This operations concept could contribute to reducing forecast model error growth, and concomitantly, forecast uncertainty. The sensor web concept contrasts with today's data collection techniques and observing system operations concepts. Although the technologies and capabilities of our space-, atmospheric-, and surface-based platforms and instruments have evolved significantly during the past four decades, operations concepts for present day observing systems remain essentially unchanged: independent platforms and instruments characterize today's "distributed data collection" systems. information sharing between platforms and ins

The discovery of the association between terms and a specified topic is a difficult task. A new data mining technique, topic-oriented mining and reasoning, is presented for this task. The technique consists of two threads: pattern mining and pattern reasoning. Pattern mining means the automatic discovery of interesting user topic models. A novel topic structure is presented for this thread. Pattern reasoning means the utilization and maintenance of the interesting user topic models to determine if an input data is relevant to the specified topic. The innovation for this thread is the use of meta-knowledge for the discovered knowledge. In this way the system can trace errors to update inadequate subtopics in the user topic model. The experimental results show that all objectives we expect for the topic-oriented model are achievable.

The advent of network coding promises to change many aspects of networking. Network coding moves away from the classical approach of networking, which treats networks as akin to physical transportation systems. We overview some of the main features of network coding that are most relevant to wireless networks. In particular, we discuss the fact that random distributed network coding is asymptotically optimal for wireless networks with and without packet erasures. These results are extremely general and allow packet loss correlation, such as may occur in fading wireless channels. The coded network lends itself, for multicast connections, to a cost optimization which not only outperforms traditional routing tree-based approaches, but also lends itself to a distributed implementation and to a dynamic implementation when changing conditions, such as mobility, arise. We illustrate the performance of such optimization methods for energy efficiency in wireless networks and propose some new directions for research in the area.

We describe our work on the development of Language and Evaluation Resources for the evaluation of summaries in English and Chinese. The language resources include a parallel corpus of English and Chinese texts which are translations of each other, a set of queries in both languages, clusters of documents relevants to each query, sentence relevance measures for each sentence in the document clusters, and manual multi-document summaries at different compression rates. The evaluation resources consist of metrics for measuring the content of automatic summaries against reference summaries. The framework can be used in the evaluation of extractive, non-extractive, single and multi-document summarization. We focus on the resources developed that are made available for the research community.

We present ViMPIOS, a novel MPI-IO implementation based on ViPIOS, the Vienna Parallel Input Output System. ViMPIOS inherits the defining characteristics of ViPIOS, which makes it a client-server based system focusing on cluster architectures. ViMPIOS stands out from all other MPI-IO implementations by its "truly" portable design, which allows not only applications to be transferred between parallel architectures easily but also to keep their original performance characteristics on the new platform as far as possible. This is kept by the "smart" AI-blackboard module of ViPIOS, which is responsible for an appropriate data layout. Specifically in this paper we concentrate on the algorithm, which maps MPI-IO data structures on respective ViPIOS structures, and thus allows to exploit the ViPIOS properties.
