This paper reviews the NTIRE 2023 challenge on efficient single-image super-resolution with a focus on the proposed solutions and results. The aim of this challenge is to devise a network that reduces one or several aspects such as runtime, parameters, FLOPs, activations, memory footprint, and depth of RFDN while at least maintaining the PSNR of 29.00dB on DIV2K validation datasets. The challenge had 272 registered participants, and 35 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art for efficient single-image super-resolution. © 2023 IEEE.

We consider the range-based localization problem, which involves estimating an object's position by using m sensors, hoping that as the number m of sensors increases, the estimate converges to the true position with the minimum variance. We show that under some conditions on the sensor deployment and measurement noises, the LS estimator is strongly consistent and asymptotically normal. However, the LS problem is nonsmooth and nonconvex, and therefore hard to solve. We then devise realizable estimators that possess the same asymptotic properties as the LS one. These estimators are based on a two-step estimation architecture, which says that any √m-consistent estimate followed by a one-step Gauss-Newton iteration can yield a solution that possesses the same asymptotic property as the LS one. The keypoint of the two-step scheme is to construct a √mconsistent estimate in the first step. In terms of whether the variance of measurement noises is known or not, we propose the Bias-Eli estimator (which involves solving a generalized trust region subproblem) and the Noise-Est estimator (which is obtained by solving a convex problem), respectively. Both of them are proved to be √m-consistent. Moreover, we show that by discarding the constraints in the above two optimization problems, the resulting closed-form estimators (called Bias-Eli-Lin and Noise-Est-Lin) are also √m-consistent. Plenty of simulations verify the correctness of our theoretical claims, showing that the proposed two-step estimators can asymptotically achieve the Cramer-Rao lower bound. As we know, air pollution is one of the major problems in the metropolis. Due to this a lot of consequences have to be faced by all people. One of the main reasons for this are the vehicles. Most of the time people use their vehicles unnecessarily without any certain reasons. Due to the same reason another problem of traffic congestion arises. And this can be reduced if people become a bit more serious about it. They should prefer using public transport rather than personal vehicles for travelling large distances. By this the number of vehicles on the road will be turned down and it might solve the above two problems directly. So, the main approach is based on this theory itself to reduce the number of transports on the road. The solution is an application which runs on phone and keep track of the fuel used by the vehicle. A certain fuel limit shall be set based on vehicle type, its fuel consumption and other constraints. Once the limit got exceeded, fuel price shall differ and automated calculation would get you actual fuel amount. This aims at reducing the unnecessary usage of vehicles. There is a CO2 emission model in an application which can predict the amount of CO2 produced by the vehicle. The objective of the proposed work is to control the usage of vehicles based on the fuel used by a particular vehicle for a period of time. As the module has been tested with ML model for mileage prediction and CO2 emission with different algorithms and got the best accuracy of around 85%. There will be no hardware in this work, if any hardware implemented all over India then that prototype model will produce good impact in the vehicle fuel usage prediction and CO2 emissions. Hardware based projects using IOT devices, VTRS etc. is something which is very hard to implement in India as CCTV are still not installed and used properly. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Defects in gastric progenitor cell differentiation are associated with various gastric disorders, including atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and gastric cancer. However, the mechanisms underlying the multilineage differentiation of gastric progenitor cells during healthy homeostasis remain poorly understood. Here, using a single-cell RNA sequencing method, Quartz-Seq2, we analyzed the gene expression dynamics of progenitor cell differentiation toward pit cell, neck cell, and parietal cell lineages in healthy adult mouse corpus tissues. Enrichment analysis of pseudotime-dependent genes and a gastric organoid assay revealed that EGFR-ERK signaling promotes pit cell differentiation, whereas NF-κB signaling maintains gastric progenitor cells in an undifferentiated state. In addition, pharmacological inhibition of EGFR in vivo resulted in a decreased number of pit cells. Although activation of EGFR signaling in gastric progenitor cells has been suggested as one of the major inducers of gastric cancers, our findings unexpectedly identified that EGFR signaling exerts a differentiation-promoting function, not a mitogenic function, in normal gastric homeostasis.

MEGCF: Multimodal Entity Graph Collaborative Filtering for Personalized Recommendation

In most E-commerce platforms, whether the displayed items trigger the user's interest largely depends on their most eye-catching multimodal content. Consequently, increasing efforts focus on modeling multimodal user preference, and the pressing paradigm is to incorporate complete multimodal deep features of the items into the recommendation module. However, the existing studies ignore the mismatch problem between multimodal feature extraction (MFE) and user interest modeling (UIM). That is, MFE and UIM have different emphases. Specifically, MFE is migrated from and adapted to upstream tasks such as image classification. In addition, it is mainly a content-oriented and non-personalized process, while UIM, with its greater focus on understanding user interaction, is essentially a user-oriented and personalized process. Therefore, the direct incorporation of MFE into UIM for purely user-oriented tasks, tends to introduce a large number of preference-independent multimodal noise and contaminate the embedding representations in UIM. This paper aims at solving the mismatch problem between MFE and UIM, so as to generate high-quality embedding representations and better model multimodal user preferences. Towards this end, we develop a novel model, multimodal entity graph collaborative filtering, short for MEGCF. The UIM of the proposed model captures the semantic correlation between interactions and the features obtained from MFE, thus making a better match between MFE and UIM. More precisely, semantic-rich entities are first extracted from the multimodal data, since they are more relevant to user preferences than other multimodal information. These entities are then integrated into the user-item interaction graph. Afterwards, a symmetric linear Graph Convolution Network (GCN) module is constructed to perform message propagation over the graph, in order to capture both high-order semantic correlation and collaborative filtering signals. Meta-Path Based Graph Contrastive Learning for Micro-Video Recommendation

Nowadays, micro-video sharing platforms have become popular tools for people creating and viewing micro-videos in daily life. Micro-video recommendation task has attracted significant attention from researchers, recently. The key to a high-quality micro-video recommendation system is learning meaningful user and micro-video representations. Recently, many graph neural networks (GNNs) are proposed to learn node representations in graphs, which could be useful for recommendation tasks. However, we argue that directly utilizing existing GNNs in micro-video recommendations is ill-posed. The reasons are: (1) most previous GNNs fail to capture the heterogeneity of heterogeneous graphs since they are designed for homogeneous graphs;(2) they overemphasize node proximity and could hurt the robustness of node embeddings. In contrast to previous work, we propose a meta-path-based graph contrastive learning network (MPGCL) that learns more meaningful user and video embeddings for recommendation. Specifically, we yield homogeneous graphs for user type and video type to better capture heterogeneity based on a well-designed meta-path-based random walk strategy. Furthermore, to learn more robust node embeddings that are less sensitive to noise, we propose a graph contrastive learning network on different types of homogeneous graphs, which maximizes the consistency between graph representations with different views. We do extensive experiments on three real-world datasets and the results show that our model can learn more meaningful embeddings for user and micro-videos and outperforms the strong baselines. © 2022, The Authors. Kernel-based off-policy estimation without overlap: Instance optimality beyond semiparametric efficiency

We study optimal procedures for estimating a linear functional based on observational data. In many problems of this kind, a widely used assumption is strict overlap, i.e., uniform boundedness of the importance ratio, which measures how well the observational data covers the directions of interest. When it is violated, the classical semi-parametric efficiency bound can easily become infinite, so that the instance-optimal risk depends on the function class used to model the regression function. For any convex and symmetric function class F, we derive a non-asymptotic local minimax bound on the mean-squared error in estimating a broad class of linear functionals. This lower bound refines the classical semi-parametric one, and makes connections to moduli of continuity in functional estimation. When F is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, we prove that this lower bound can be achieved up to a constant factor by analyzing a computationally simple regression estimator. We apply our general results to various families of examples, thereby uncovering a spectrum of rates that interpolate between the classical theories of semi-parametric efficiency (with √n-consistency) and the slower minimax rates associated with non-parametric function estimation. Gamma-ray observation in the sub-PeV range helps us search for Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerators, PeVatrons. Measurement of the energy spectrum of gamma rays from astrophysical sources is especially crucial to discuss their hadronic or leptonic origin. In this study, gamma rays from the sky region of HESS J1843−033 are observed by the Tibet air shower array equipped with the underground muon detector array. A new gamma-ray source TASG J1844−038 is detected above 25 TeV with a 6.2 σ level in the region of interest, the position of which is consistent with HESS J1843−033, eHWC J1842−035, and LHAASO J1843−0338. The gamma-ray energy spectrum of TASG J1844−038 is successfully measured in 25−130 TeV for the first time;it smoothly connects to that of HESS J1843−033 and gives consistent flux levels with those of eHWC J1842−035 and LHAASO J1843−0338 at 56 and 100 TeV, respectively. The analysis of the combined gamma-ray spectra between the H.E.S.S., LHAASO, and TASG sources indicates the cutoff at about 50 TeV. The distribution of the molecular clouds around TASG J1844−038 is investigated by analyzing public CO line-emission data;our study finds the clouds in the velocity range of 75−95 km s−1 lying flat over the region with a 50 K km s−1 level. The association of the observed gamma rays with a nearby supernova remnant SNR G28.6−0.1 is discussed, and it is proposed that cosmic rays accelerated by SNR G28.6−0.1 up to about 500 TeV generate the observed gamma rays from the collisions with the ambient gas found in the analysis. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Advancement in wireless transmission has enabled the communication among multiple devices all over the world, as well as expanding the frontiers of wireless Internet access. As a result of these advancement, numerous devices are questing for wireless connectivity thereby congesting the existing spectrum. If new measures are not taken to reduce depletion of the reserved radio resource, new allocations of wireless Internet access will be impossible, thereby risking the development of the entire wireless ecosystem. The demands for resourceful spectrum consumption have continually driven researchers and stakeholders in the wireless industry to search for spare radio spectrum to offer affordable and reliable wireless connectivity. The TV broadcasting is not fully utilizing the spectrum in some geographical zone. These TV unused spaces called TV White Spaces (TVWS), are well-thought-out to be the probable future resolutions for unavailability of spectrum. The low frequency band (470 to 694 MHz) of the unutilized TV channel has exceptional broadcast features over extensive distances and enables transmissions through high-rise buildings, trees, and mountains. These features allow the applications of TVWS in Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor network, wireless connectivity, wireless switching, smart grid and cities, automated transportation, and logistics as well as connectivity in cloud infrastructure. This paper presents a study on the advantages and benefits of television white space as an alternative to wireless broadband connectivity.

We have been observing extensive air showers using the Tibet-III air shower array and the underground water-Cherenkov muon detector array (MD) to determine the chemical composition of cosmic rays with energies corresponding to the knee energy region. In previous studies, we developed a method to acquire the proton spectrum in the energy range from 40 to 630 TeV via a hybrid experiment using the Tibet-III and MD and investigated its performance. We conducted Monte Carlo simulations showing that this method can separate protons with a purity of 90% and that the maximum total systematic error of the proton flux depending on interaction models in air-shower development is ±37%. In the present study, analysis results for data acquired over a period of 12 days in 2014 are presented. The abundances of proton-like showers to whole well-reconstructed showers, including model dependence, are 9.1%–14.5% at ∼35 TeV and 1.8%–3.1% at ∼450 TeV. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
