Existing simulations designed for cultural and interpersonal skill training rely on pre-defined responses with a menu option selection interface. Using a multiple-choice interface and restricting trainees' responses may limit the trainees' ability to apply the lessons in real life situations. These systems, also rely on a simplistic evaluation model, where trainees' selected options are marked as either correct or incorrect. The model cannot capture sufficient information that could drive an adaptive feedback mechanism to improve trainees' cultural awareness. This paper describes the design of a dialogue-based simulation for cultural awareness training. The simulation, built around a disaster management scenario involving a joint coalition between the US and the Chinese armies. Trainees were able to engage in realistic dialogue with the Chinese agent. Their responses, at different points, get evaluated by different multi-label classification models. Based on training on our dataset, the models score the trainees' responses for their awareness of the Chinese culture. Trainees also get feedback that informs the cultural appropriateness of their responses. The result of this work showed the following;i) A feature-based evaluation model improves the design, modeling and computation of dialogue-based training simulation systems;ii) Output from current automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems gave comparable end results compared with the output from manual transcription;iii) A multi-label classification model trained as a cultural expert gave results which were comparable with scores assigned by human annotators. © 2020, CC BY.

Flying ad-hoc networks (FANETs) have many applications in military, industrial and agricultural areas. Due to specific features of FANETs, such as high-speed nodes, low density of nodes in the network, and rapid changes in the topology, most routing protocols designed for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) or vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are not compatible with FANETs. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy logic-based routing approach called OLSR+ for FANETs. In this scheme, we seek to improve the optimized link state routing protocol (OLSR) so that it can efficiently be used in FANETs. OLSR+ includes four main phases: 1) Discovering neighboring nodes. In this phase, we propose a new and efficient technique for estimating the lifetime of the link between two unmanned ariel vehicles (UAVs) based on the link quality, distance, relative velocity, and movement direction. 2) Selecting multipoint relays (MPRs). In this phase, we present a fuzzy mechanism for selecting a set of MPR nodes. According to this mechanism, when a node has higher residual energy, higher link lifetime, and more neighborhood degree compared to others, it achieves more fitness to be selected as MPR. 3) Discovering the network topology. In this phase, we modify the format of the topology control (TC) message and add two fields, including route energy and route lifetime to this message. 4) Calculating the routing table. In OLSR+, we consider two parameters, including route energy and route lifetime, for establishing stable paths. Finally, we simulate OLSR+ using NS3 and compare its performance with two methods, namely greedy optimized link state routing (G-OLSR) and optimized link state routing (OLSR). The simulation results show that OLSR+ successfully reduces delay compared to G-OLSR and OLSR. In addition, it has higher packet delivery rate and throughput than others. Also, it improves energy consumption in the network. However, OLSR+ has more routing overhead than G-OLSR. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

In this report, we summarize the first NTIRE challenge on light field (LF) image super-resolution (SR), which aims at super-resolving LF images under the standard bicubic degradation with a magnification factor of 4. This challenge develops a new LF dataset called NTIRE-2023 for validation and test, and provides a toolbox called BasicLFSR to facilitate model development. Compared with single image SR, the major challenge of LF image SR lies in how to exploit complementary angular information from plenty of views with varying disparities. In total, 148 participants have registered the challenge, and 11 teams have successfully submitted results with PSNR scores higher than the baseline method LF-InterNet [1]. These newly developed methods have set new state-of-the-art in LF image SR, e.g., the winning method achieves around 1 dB PSNR improvement over the existing state-of-the-art method DistgSSR [2]. We report the solutions proposed by the participants, and summarize their common trends and useful tricks. Personalized PageRank (PPR) is a widely used node proximity measure in graph mining and network analysis. Given a source node s and a target node t, the PPR value π (s, t) represents the probability that a random walk from s terminates at t, and thus indicates the bidirectional importance between s and t. The majority of the existing work focuses on the single-source queries, which asks for the PPR value of a given source node s and every node t ∈ V . However, the single-source query only reflects the importance of each node t with respect to s. In this paper, we consider the single-target PPR query, which measures the opposite direction of importance for PPR. Given a target node t, the single-target PPR query asks for the PPR value of every node s ∈ V to a given target node t. We propose RBS, a novel algorithm that answers approximate single-target queries with optimal computational complexity. We show that RBS improves three concrete applications: heavy hitters PPR query, single-source SimRank computation, and scalable graph neural networks. We conduct experiments to demonstrate that RBS outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both efficiency and precision on real-world benchmark datasets. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Branching optical frequency transfer with enhanced post automatic phase noise cancellation

—We present a technique for coherence transfer of laser light through a branching fiber link, where the optical phase noise induced by environmental perturbations via the fiber link is passively compensated by remote users without the requirements of any active servo components. At each remote site, an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is simultaneously taken as a frequency distinguisher for distinguishing its unique frequency from other sites’ and as an optical actuator for compensating the phase noise coming from the optical fiber. With this configuration, we incorporate a long outside loop path consisting of a fiber-pigtailed AOM into the loop, enabling the significant reduction of the outside loop phase noise in the passive way. To further address the residual out-of-loop phase noise coming from the interferometer and the two-way optical frequency comparison setup, we design a low-noise active temperature stabilization system. Measurements with a back-to-back system show that the stability in our stabilization system is 2 × 10−16 at 1 s, reaching 2×10−20 after 10,000 s. Adopting these techniques, we demonstrate transfer of a laser light through a branching fiber network with 50 km and 145 km two fiber links. After being compensated for the 145 km fiber link, the relative frequency instability is 3.4 × 10−15 at the 1 s averaging time and scales down to 3.7×10−19 at the 10,000 s averaging time. Galaxy clusters contain vast amounts of hot ionized gas known as the intracluster medium (ICM). In relaxed cluster cores, the radiative cooling time of the ICM is shorter than the age of the cluster. However, the absence of line emission associated with cooling suggests heating mechanisms that offset the cooling, with feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) being the most likely source^1,2. Turbulence and bulk motions, such as the oscillating (‘sloshing’) motion of the core gas in the cluster potential well, have also been proposed as mechanisms for heat distribution from the outside of the core^3,4. Here we present X-ray spectroscopic observations of the Centaurus galaxy cluster with the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission satellite. We find that the hot gas flows along the line of sight relative to the central galaxy, with velocities from 130 km s⁻¹ to 310 km s⁻¹ within about 30 kpc of the centre. This indicates bulk flow consistent with core gas sloshing. Although the bulk flow may prevent excessive accumulation of cooled gas at the centre, it could distribute the heat injected by the AGN and bring in thermal energy from the surrounding ICM. The velocity dispersion of the gas is found to be only ≲120 km s⁻¹ in the core, even within about 10 kpc of the AGN. This suggests that the influence of the AGN on the surrounding ICM motion is limited in the cluster. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2025.

Most of the recent advances in crowd counting have evolved from hand-designed density estimation networks, where multi-scale features are leveraged to address the scale variation problem, but at the expense of demanding design efforts. In this work, we automate the design of counting models with Neural Architecture Search (NAS) and introduce an end-to-end searched encoder-decoder architecture, Automatic Multi-Scale Network (AMSNet). Specifically, we utilize a counting-specific two-level search space. The encoder and decoder in AMSNet are composed of different cells discovered from micro-level search, while the multi-path architecture is explored through macro-level search. To solve the pixel-level isolation issue in MSE loss, AMSNet is optimized with an auto-searched Scale Pyramid Pooling Loss (SPPLoss) that supervises the multi-scale structural information. Extensive experiments on four datasets show AMSNet produces state-of-the-art results that outperform hand-designed models, fully demonstrating the efficacy of NAS-Count. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Identifying cohesion of genes for subtypes of diseases in a high-dimensional gene expression database is a highly challenging problem, since the subtypes are based on slight intensity differences between gene expressions. The existed clustering methods are biased with training dataset in identifying the subtypes, and the methods have received irrelevant subtypes. Therefore, this paper introduces unsupervised way of fuzzy clustering to identify the subtypes of genes in a breast cancer database. Here, we have used the dataset which contains 12,634 genes and 288 for finding three available subclasses. In order to cluster the similar intensity genes in the breast cancer dataset, this paper incorporates possibilistic approach, intuitionistic fuzzy sets, and kernel functions with proposed fuzzy clustering techniques. The experimental part of this paper shows that the proposed clustering method how notably identifies the similar gene patterns for common subtypes of breast cancer.

Due to the importance and sensitivity of medical data, the security protection and privacy preservation of the Healthcare Internet of Things (IoT) are current research hotspots. However, existing research schemes still suffer from incomplete security properties, imperfect authentication mechanisms, and inadequate privacy preservation. Therefore, this paper presents SECP-AKE, a secure and efficient certificateless-password-based authenticated key exchange protocol for IoT-based smart healthcare, which enables batch authentication, resists physical attacks, and provides strong anonymity. Specifically, using certificateless cryptography, the SECP-AKE protocol enables batch authentication of authorized users and devices while also resolving the key escrow problem. In particular, the SECP-AKE protocol incorporates Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) to resist physical attacks, thus enhancing device security and ensuring reliable medical service delivery. Additionally, the design of a pseudonym update mechanism can achieve user unlinkability, thereby providing enhanced privacy preservation. The results from both formal verification using SVO logic and informal security analyses demonstrate that the SECP-AKE protocol is secure and offers more comprehensive security properties. Meanwhile, the use of a well-known automated security verification tool Scyther further evaluates the protocol’s security reliability. Ultimately, comparative experiments on communication overhead and computational overhead demonstrate that the SECP-AKE protocol is efficient and feasible compared to state-of-the-art existing works.

As we all know, file and free space fragmentation negatively affect file system performance. F2FS is a file system designed for flash memory. However, it suffers from severe fragmentation due to its out-of-place updates and the highly synchronous, multi-threaded writing behaviors of mobile applications. We observe that the running time of fragmented files is 2.36× longer than that of continuous files and that F2FS's in-place update scheme is incapable of reducing fragmentation. A fragmented file system leads to a poor user experience.(p)(/p)Reserving space to prevent fragmentation is an intuitive approach. However, reserving space for all files wastes space since there are a large number of files. To deal with this dilemma, we propose an adaptive reserved space (ARS) scheme to choose some specific files to update in the reserved space. How to effectively select reserved files is critical to performance. We collect file characteristics associated with fragmentation to construct data sets and use decision trees to accurately pick reserved files. Besides, adjustable reserved space and dynamic reservation strategy are adopted. We implement ARS on a HiKey960 development platform and a commercial smartphone with slight space and file creation time overheads. Experimental results show that ARS reduces file and free space fragmentation dramatically, improves file I/O performance and reduces garbage collection overhead compared to traditional F2FS and F2FS with in-place updates. Furthermore, ARS delivers up to 1.26× transactions per second under SQLite than traditional F2FS and reduces running time of realistic workloads by up to 41.72% than F2FS with in-place updates.
