Underground prospecting operations are often characterized by critical safety issues mainly due to poor visibility and blind spots around large vehicles and equipment. This can result in vehicle-to-vehicle collisions, as well as vehicle-to-pedestrian or structural-element collisions, resulting in accidents. In this article, we discuss an anti-collision system for pedestrian identification in deep mines under the premise that we are looking to prevent collisions with moving machinery. This study presents the findings from testing an image processing module and sensory system based on deep learnig in the context of "smart connected mine" project.

The Interrelationships between the length of stay, readmission, and post-acute care referral in cardiac surgery patients

Prolonged hospital stays, and readmission contribute to substantial healthcare cost. Hence, an assessment of the optimal inpatient length of stay (LOS) associated with lower readmission rate is important for healthcare providers. Post-acute care (PAC) facilities have promising potential to shorten the LOS;however, currently their influence on overall patient outcomes is not well understood. The primary goal of this study is to highlight the interrelated risk factors of LOS and readmission for cardiac patients. The study also examines the influence of PAC referral on LOS and readmission. In this paper, a cohort of 13,982 Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) and Valve Replacement (VR) patients from 49 hospitals in the U.S. were analyzed with respect to the association of healthcare delivery, demographics, PAC referral, and clinical conditions with LOS and readmission. A generalized linear mixed model and multinomial logistic regression model were developed to evaluate the readmission and LOS associative risk factors, respectively. Referral to PAC was included as a vital predictor in both models to examine its impact on optimal LOS and improving patient outcomes. The results indicate a non-uniform care distribution across census divisions and an inverse relationship between LOS and readmissions. The analytics showed that higher LOS patients were more often referred to PAC and yet they were more prone to readmission except for the patients who were referred to Long Term Care (LTC). This study identifies the effects of healthcare delivery, demographic, comorbidity, and PAC referral factors on readmission and LOS, so that personalized acute and post-acute care coordination can be achieved to improve overall patient outcomes. Interventions such as treating CABG and VR patients with multiple comorbidities for longer time in acute hospitals and increasing LTC referral can result in significant improvement. © 2022 The Author(s)

Early and accurate diagnosis of brain tumors is crucial to improving patient outcomes and optimizing treatment strategies. Long-term brain injury results from aberrant proliferation of either malignant or nonmalignant tissues in the brain. MRIs, or magnetic resonance imaging, are one of the most used approaches for detecting brain tumors. Professionals physically evaluate people after they have had MRI filtering, the process of enhancing MRI scans for radiologist interpretation, to establish if they have a brain tumor. Because different specialists use different frames to make judgments on the same MRI image, their analyses may yield contradictory results. Furthermore, simply detecting a tumor is insufficient. Inconsistent diagnoses can lead to delays in treatment, impacting survival rates and quality of care. It is also crucial to diagnose the patient's tumor so that treatment can begin as soon as possible. In this research, we investigate the multi-class classification of brain tumors utilizing a cutting-edge methodology that includes feature extraction from pictures using the DieT Transformer model, dimensionality reduction with PCA, and feature selection using the ADE algorithm. The proposed model, known in the publication as ADE_DieT, obtained an accuracy of 96.09 %. In addition, this article analyzes the performance of various pre-trained models, including MobileNetV3, NasNet, ResNet50, VGG16, VGG19, and DeiT. The proposed approach shortens the time required for manual diagnosis by clinicians by assisting in the rapid and accurate identification of brain tumors using MRI data. In oncology, this is important since it allows for early treatment. Integrating ADE_DieT into clinical workflows can support radiologists by reducing diagnosis time and enhancing diagnostic consistency. © 2024 The Authors

Recording the provenance of scientific computation results is key to the support of traceability, reproducibility and quality assessment of data products. Several data models have been explored to address this need, providing representations of workflow plans and their executions as well as means of packaging the resulting information for archiving and sharing. However, existing approaches tend to lack interoperable adoption across workflow management systems. In this work we present Workflow Run RO-Crate, an extension of RO-Crate (Research Object Crate) and *** to capture the provenance of the execution of computational workflows at different levels of granularity and bundle together all their associated objects (inputs, outputs, code, etc.). The model is supported by a diverse, open community that runs regular meetings, discussing development, maintenance and adoption aspects. Workflow Run RO-Crate is already implemented by several workflow management systems, allowing interoperable comparisons between workflow runs from heterogeneous systems. We describe the model, its alignment to standards such as W3C PROV, and its implementation in six workflow systems. Finally, we illustrate the application of Workflow Run RO-Crate in two use cases of machine learning in the digital image analysis domain. © 2023, CC BY.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved remarkable performance in the task of semi-supervised node classification. However, most existing GNN models require sufficient labeled data for effective network training. Their performance can be seriously degraded when labels are extremely limited. To address this issue, we propose a new framework termed Contrastive Graph Poisson Networks (CGPN) for node classification under extremely limited labeled data. Specifically, our CGPN derives from variational inference; integrates a newly designed Graph Poisson Network (GPN) to effectively propagate the limited labels to the entire graph and a normal GNN, such as Graph Attention Network, that fexibly guides the propagation of GPN; applies a contrastive objective to further exploit the supervision information from the learning process of GPN and GNN models. Essentially, our CGPN can enhance the learning performance of GNNs under extremely limited labels by contrastively propagating the limited labels to the entire graph. We conducted extensive experiments on different types of datasets to demonstrate the superiority of CGPN.

Reinforcement learning (RL) has gained prominence in healthcare due to its ability to optimize treatment strategies without relying on predefined mathematical models. However, existing approaches face critical challenges: (1) the optimality of learned strategies is assessed without considering treatment risks, potentially leading to unsafe recommendations;(2) distribution shift issues cause learned strategies to diverge from physician decisions;and (3) past observational data and treatment history are often overlooked, leading to suboptimal state representations. To address these limitations, we propose a Dynamic Treatment Strategy Generation Model that integrates Dead Ends with an Offline Supervised Actor-Critic approach (DOSAC-DTR). Our model incorporates Dead Ends into the Actor-Critic framework to evaluate risks associated with recommended treatments. Additionally, physician oversight is embedded to mitigate distribution shift and align the learned strategy with expert decisions while maximizing expected outcomes. To enhance state representation, we employ an LSTM-based encoder-decoder model to capture essential patient history, ensuring robust decision-making. Experimental results on real-world datasets (MIMIC-III) demonstrate that DOSAC-DTR significantly reduces mortality rates (Sepsis: 3.51%, Ventilation: 13.74%) and improves treatment alignment with physicians (Jaccard similarity: 0.362, 0.126) compared to baseline models. These findings underscore the potential of reinforcement learning in personalized healthcare, improving both treatment efficacy and patient safety. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to apply IoT technologies to transform the popular Mahjong game into a Digital Mahjong System (DMS) for digitally performing cognitive assessments. People have started exploring digital cognitive assessment tools for better objectivity and simplification. However, most of these tools are not friendly for older adults. This paper aims to address this issue by integrating IoT technologies with Mahjong to make cognitive assessment simpler and more engaging for older adults. DMS has the following features: 1) integrating motion tracking devices into Mahjong tiles and transferring them into Digital Mahjong Tiles (DMTs), which can precisely capture their moving trajectory during the assessment, 2) using a Near Field Communication reader to configure DMT’s primary data, 3) supporting Over-The-Air Device Firmware Update that can be done remotely via Bluetooth, and 4) developing a charging base that can charge 16 DMTs simultaneously using Qi wireless charging standard. With further testing, the DMS has the potential to become a digital platform to implement and test various cognitive assessment tools integrating Mahjong elements. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, we consider IRS-assisted transmissions from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to a receiver with uncertain channel information. By adjusting the magnitude of reflecting coefficients, the IRS can sustain its operations by harvesting energy from the AP's signal beamforming. Considering channel estimation errors, we model both the AP-IRS channel and the AP-IRS-receiver as a cascaded channel by norm-based uncertainty sets. This allows us to formulate a robust optimization problem to minimize the AP's transmit power, subject to the receiver's worst-case data rate requirement and the IRS's worst-case power budget constraint. Instead of using the alternating optimization (AO) method, we firstly propose a heuristic scheme to decompose the IRS's phase shift optimization and the AP's active beamforming. Based on semidefinite relaxations of the worst-case constraints, we further devise an iterative algorithm to optimize the AP's transmit beamforming and the magnitude of the IRS's reflecting coefficients efficiently by solving a set of semidefinite programs. Simulation results reveal that the AP requires a higher transmit power to deal with the channel uncertainty. Moreover, the negative effect of channel uncertainty can be alleviated by using a larger-size IRS.

Dialogue-based simulation for cultural awareness training

Existing simulations designed for cultural and interpersonal skill training rely on pre-defined responses with a menu option selection interface. Using a multiple-choice interface and restricting trainees' responses may limit the trainees' ability to apply the lessons in real life situations. These systems, also rely on a simplistic evaluation model, where trainees' selected options are marked as either correct or incorrect. The model cannot capture sufficient information that could drive an adaptive feedback mechanism to improve trainees' cultural awareness. This paper describes the design of a dialogue-based simulation for cultural awareness training. The simulation, built around a disaster management scenario involving a joint coalition between the US and the Chinese armies. Trainees were able to engage in realistic dialogue with the Chinese agent. Their responses, at different points, get evaluated by different multi-label classification models. Based on training on our dataset, the models score the trainees' responses for their awareness of the Chinese culture. Trainees also get feedback that informs the cultural appropriateness of their responses. The result of this work showed the following;i) A feature-based evaluation model improves the design, modeling and computation of dialogue-based training simulation systems;ii) Output from current automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems gave comparable end results compared with the output from manual transcription;iii) A multi-label classification model trained as a cultural expert gave results which were comparable with scores assigned by human annotators. © 2020, CC BY.
