Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm that shares many similarities with evolutionary computation techniques. However, the PSO is driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor motivated by collective behaviours of bird and other social organisms instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Inspired by the classical PSO method and quantum mechanics theories, this work presents new Quantum-behaved PSO (QPSO) approaches using mutation operator with exponential probability distribution. The simulation results demonstrate good performance of the QPSO in solving a well-studied continuous optimization problem of mechanical engineering design. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

Within unmanned aerial vehicles on-going research topics, automatic target recognition is acquiring relevance. This is due to the easiness with which it is possible to acquire such devices. In order to do this, signal processing and classification techniques could be adopted. Also, in order to improve the classification ratio, optimization techniques could be used. This subject is object of study for many researchers, but the authors worry about the lack of information while using single-objective optimization techniques. The proposed work comprises the application of multi-objective optimization design in order to create an automatic target recognition system to discriminate different types of unmanned aerial vehicles. In order to accomplish this, a K-band radar system is used to send and receive electromagnetic signals, which are then processed with feature extraction techniques, and finally, applied on an artificial neural network system. In order to improve the system's classification ratio, the classifier is defined as a multi-objective problem, and evolutionary multi-objective optimization techniques are applied. Finally, in order to select the best possible trade-off, the level diagrams multi-criteria decision making methodology is used to compare different solutions. © 2017

This paper presents a new discrete-time sliding-mode control design for multiple-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with tuning parameters by particle swarm optimization (PSO). PSO is a kind of evolutionary algorithm based on a population of individuals and motivated by the simulation of social behavior instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Several control algorithms are presented, two decoupling design and six new approaches of the coupling design of sliding-mode control without the necessity of calculate the process interactor matrix. SMC needs a design tool for parameter configuration and efficient practically to deal with multivariable processes. Simulations are carried out using both decoupling and coupling discrete-time SMC designs. Results shown that the new proposed approach for designing the discrete-time coupling SMC is a powerful tool and it performs better than the decoupling design, usually utilized in MIMO process. The simulations are assessed on a robotic manipulator of two degree-of-freedom (2-DOF), that constitute a MIMO nonlinear coupling dynamic system, with treatment of payload mass and link length variations. Simulation results show that the application of this control strategy effectively improve the trajectory tracking precision of position and velocity variables. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is an indicator frequently used for measuring efficiency of critical equipment. Typically presents a negative asymmetrical distribution, limited to the interval [0;1]. Due to this characteristic, it is uncommon using statistical control procedures for monitoring OEE. This study aims to contribute to this discussion by presenting an approach for monitoring OEE through statistical control procedures. The OEE/TEEP control chart is presented with sensitization procedures, allowing the user to adapt the results of the monitoring process to the needs of the monitored resource constraint. Performance results are presented based on an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study, with 4551 sets of 20 thousand observations each. One application example is also presented, for illustrating the potential of the proposed control charts.

In the present work we introduce a system identification framework where no a priori information on the system to be identified is available. Focusing in the specific case of radial basis functions neural networks models, we insert the choice of the model complexity and its inputs in the optimization procedure together with the model parameters, aiming at accuracy, model validity and regularization in a multiobjective approach. The multicriteria problem is solved by means of the multiobjective cuckoo search, which is based on an archiving technique and the crowding distance metric. Simulation results are promising when the methodology is applied to identify a robot arm given solely input and output data.

This paper presents a multiple case study concerning to the Integrated Product Development Process(IPDP) that involves the concepts of environmental sustainability and social inclusion to build solar water heating system made of discarded and recyclable materials in a way that People with Visual deficiency(Pw VD) can participate in its *** research proposes that engineering courses in a near future adopt the aspect of Citizenship Education systematically, contextualizing environmental impact reduction and social inclusion of people with *** technical procedure of the study was delineated according to IPDP phases defined in two multidisciplinary strands leading to raw materials data collection through recycling and manufacturability with accessibility process to develop the product *** analysis of the results presents the tooling developed for manufacturing with accessibility of people with visual impairments and the efficiency of the prototype *** the end, it is placed the relevant notes observed during the research and sustainable assignments in social and environmental dimensions for the education of engineering professionals.

Prosthesis can be seen as a complex product and its project requires a formal method to consistent development. In this research, the main objective is to determine a feasible method for the creation of virtual models of anatomic human prosthesis. The work presents a conceptual model based on digital images applied in 3D reconstruction of computed tomography scans. The proposed method uses an automatic way based on genetic algorithm to build the virtual models to bone geometry. The CAD system can be used to build the geometric models in preparing to prosthesis generation by the production viewpoint. The problem of open contour is addressed. A case study to fill a missing area in skull is used to demonstrate the process. The work involves some technologies as CAD modeling, image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms that can be applied together in order to obtain a virtual model to prosthesis conception.

This article aims to analyze the innovation scores of IT companies and their respective clusters, resulting in a tool for constructing knowledge about these companies and gaining useful information for comparison purposes, since few studies are focused on innovation in Brazilian IT companies, especially microenterprises. A case study methodology was used in this research, and to measure innovation, the model proposed by Edison, Ali and Tonkar (2013) was used. The target audience was the LPA of information technology companies in southwest Paraná, being composed of 50 companies divided into 3 clusters. The data collection was based on a survey with 43 questions built according to the Likert Scale. As a result of the application of the Kruskall-Wallis test, with 5% significance, it was observed that there is a difference between the innovation scores of each cluster, with Clusters 1 and 3 having higher scores. As for the relationship between innovation and turnover, the Spearman Correlation test, with 5% significance, showed that there is a moderate relationship between innovation scores and company turnover. Measuring innovation, both individually and in clusters, is important in the information technology sector because it allows management to see weaknesses and strengths, and implement improvements and changes that ensure increased competitiveness and permanence in the market. © 2017 DEStech Publications. Towards safety level definition based on the HRN approach for industrial robots in collaborative activities

Since the first industrial revolution, factories seek to increase their profits by improving their performance and reducing costs in their products. With each new industrial revolution, new ideas on how to reduce costs appear. Currently, in industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, advanced robotics emerges as one of the principal pillars and with-it collaborative robotics. Collaborative robotics is the branch of robotics that has the security systems needed to perform joint activities with humans. However, the quantification of safety level varies depending on the location and more granularly from company to company. This work aims to assign levels of safety that allow a robot to perform a collaborative activity. To propose such values, the work was started with a bibliographical review focused on defining the robots that would be approached, reviewing the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) related to machinery safety and defining the term of collaboration. Then, the method of calculation of the safety indicator was evaluated, in the case covered was the Hazard Rating Number (HRN), and then defined the intervals that will be assigned to the robots that will perform collaborative activities. To validate the defined HRN intervals, a survey was developed and distributed for engineers from automation sector of an automotive company trained in safety, in this survey, categories of robots were placed for the engineers to assign HRN values to them. After the survey, the results were grouped and analyzed analytically. As a result, the proposed HRN intervals were validated because they fit the safety-level stipulated required for a robot to perform collaborative activity. Also, it was concluded that a robot can perform a collaborative activities even if it has not been acquired for this purpose, it is enough that it meets the safety requirements proposed in the work.
