Water scarcity has led to the search for sustainable methods of wastewater management in recent years. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of wastewater management through a systematic literature review, examining thirty articles published between 2012 and 2022. The main contribution lies in the in-depth analysis conducted on the management wastewater supply chain, focusing on the dimensions of sustainability studied, how they are addressed in models, the types of decisions made, and the methodologies employed. This provides insight into how sustainability has been approached in wastewater management while highlighting areas for improvement and future research.A positive trend is observed in related research, indicating a growing interest in the topic of sustainable management of wastewater supply chains up to the year 2020. To assess sustainability, optimization, and case studies were predominantly utilized, with evolutionary algorithms commonly employed in optimizations, complemented by uncertainty *** suggestions for future research, it is recommended to include political and technological aspects in the analysis of sustainability. Additionally, integrating methodologies with a greater capacity to incorporate multiple objective functions, along with a case study to illustrate their applicability, would be valuable. Addressing these outstanding issues could contribute to a better understanding of sustainable wastewater management and provide more effective solutions. © 2023 IEEE.

The global agribusiness context faces at the same time challenges of feeding a growing global population that is used to safe and nutritious food, opportunities based on innovation, high technology and efficiency in the agri-food production systems from field to table. Given the context, this article aims to present the main key aspects of the circular economy to agro-industrial cooperatives. These contributions were named key aspects, such as circular and symbiotic practices, competitive advantages, innovation, cooperation and barriers and opportunities. The field presents a problem that few literature in fact discusses circular economy approaches in the context of agro-industrial cooperatives. As a methodological procedure, a literature review was carried out in three databases to obtain relevant documents and thus analyse and discuss some characteristics based on circular economy practices applied in agro-industrial cooperatives. As a result, a diagnosis of the current scenario that agro sector organizations are facing in terms of the main rural activities and sustainable practices that relate to the circular economy;measures taken to generate competitive advantage;innovation behaviour;and how linear and circular business models are being applied in the agroindustry. A framework is presented to show potential routes strategies for closing the cycle in an agro-industrial cooperative. The opportunities are based on the implementation of high technology in the field, the use of bioenergy and the development of new circular business models throughout the agro-value chain. The study has contributions to rural properties and managers of cooperatives in terms of waste reduction, innovation generation and increases in activities and processes based on circular economy. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Discovery of rare association rules in the distribution of lawsuits in the federal justice system of Southern Brazil

In the context of data mining, infrequent association rules may be beneficial for analysing rare or extreme cases with very low support values and high confidence. In researching risky situations or allocating specific resources, such rules may have a much greater impact than rules with high support value. The objective of this study is to obtain association rules from the database of lawsuits filed in the Federal Court of Southern Brazil in 2016, including both frequent and rare rules. By finding these rules, especially rare ones, the information collected can assist in the decision-making process, in this case, such as training clerks or establishing specialised courts. The manufacturing sector is of paramount importance to a nation’s economy, as it creates employment opportunities, fosters innovation and enhances the competitive advantage in global markets. With the introduction of smart manufacturing technologies, the manufacturing sector has been able to boost its production performance, however, there is a skill gap that the manufacturing sector is facing when it comes to hiring a trained workforce. The US National Strategy for Advanced Manufacturing has underlined the importance of training an advanced manufacturing workforce with an opportunity to support historically underrepresented and underserved communities. We report the outcomes of a manufacturing training certificate program that is designed to provide equitable opportunities for high-quality, industry-relevant training that can lead to sustainable employment and economic growth. A holistic curriculum was developed to teach manufacturing education including CAD, CAM, 3D printing, AR/VR technologies, robotics and automation, assembly and production lines, and measurement systems. We report the outcomes of two cohorts that graduated in Summer 2023 and Fall 2023, in which a total of 86 training sessions were conducted. Twenty-five students enrolled and 17 students (14 males and 3 females) graduated across the two cohorts - among the graduates 47% identified as Hispanic or Latino, 41% identified as African American, and the rest identified as non-white/Hispanic;16 of the graduates belonged to the low-to-middle income category. In the future, the program can be further expanded to include on the job training opportunities with local employers. We also provide recommendations to improve the learning experience of the students and enhance participation in the program. © 2024 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The use of long short-term memory models to estimate soybean pricing: a regional climate data evaluation from Brazil

This work uses machine learning methods to analyze the influence of the Brazilian climate on international soybean price variability. For this purpose, climatic data, historical series of the extended national consumer price index, dollar price historical series, soybean harvest historical series, and international soybean price historical series are collected from different data sources. The data is then preprocessed and grouped by state. Afterward, data from the five most productive Brazilian states, Mato Grosso (MT), Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Goiás (GO), Paraná (PR), and Rio Grande do Sul (RS), which together correspond to 74.9% of total production, are chosen. Then, predictive models were built using the long short-term memory (LSTM) method, which is applied to each state dataset considering two different settings: with and without climatic data. Thus, two models were built for each Brazilian state, totaling ten predictors. These models are evaluated using 10-fold sequential split cross-validation, whose predictive results are used for performance comparison through statistical hypothesis testing. In the experimental evaluation, when trained with climatic data, the PR model achieved the lowest average values of root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE), which are 20.90 and 16.72, respectively. Regarding predictors trained without climate data, the RS and PR obtained the lowest averaged values of RMSE (20.84) and MAE (16.81), respectively. After performing statistical hypothesis tests, no significant differences were found between the models, stating, with certainty 95%, that the Brazilian climatic data did not influence soybean prices in our study. © 2013 IEEE.

Growing concern about environmental pollution has led to a tightening of legislation worldwide. An example is the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principle, which holds producers responsible for the life-cycle management of their products. In this context, the management of End-of-life tires (ELT) presents a significant challenge due to the pollution they cause by being disposed of in landfills without prior treatment. Thus, there is an opportunity to implement ELT recovery technologies that explore new sustainable alternatives. This work presents a multi-period, multi-product, multi-objective optimization model that supports decision-making for the design of a sustainable reverse logistics network. A case study is presented to show the usefulness of this model, considering the implementation of pyrolysis plants for the treatment of ELT in Chile under the regulatory framework of the EPR Law. The results show that even though the objectives are opposed, the regulatory framework of the EPR Law allows for mitigating the conflict between economic, environmental, and social decisions by establishing collection goals. The epsilon-constraint method can find economically profitable solutions, obtaining gaps of at least 8.5% and at most 19.3%. However, this will depend on the changes and sensitivity of the uncertain parameters of the model. Conclusions call for reinforcement of regulatory policies involving reverse logistics and ELT management. Future work considers the implementation of robust optimization to deal better with uncertainty. © 2023 IEEE.

The accreditation assessment of a program in higher education institutions is a process that verifies, promotes and guarantees educational quality. In Chile, it is carried out by the National Accreditation Commission, a public autonomous organization, which considers different criteria, ending up into the number of years the program is accredited. This work aims to investigate the most relevant criteria into this assessment, considering the official records of the institution through a statistical model suitable for pattern recognition. Particularly, we analyze on Master programs related to Industrial engineering. Preliminary results allow us to distinguish the main variables for improving decision-making practices, it is noted that the most prominent one is the criterion associated to the prestige of the institution where the master's program is hosted.

The rampant use of resources and the increasing risk of scarcity have been contributing to greater awareness regarding the need for maintaining resources in use for longer and the shift to renewable alternatives, in which perspective the concept of a circular bioeconomy (CBE) has been permeating the most diverse sectors. Therefore, the study’s aims were manifold: identify (i) existing practices and initiatives, (ii) barriers and potential opportunities and (iii) existing gaps for advancing a circular bioeconomy in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and (iv) provide recommendations aiming at the development of a circular bioeconomy (CBE) in the region. To that end, a systematic review of the existing academic literature was done, and reports from relevant non-peer reviewed sources were also consulted. CBE practices in LAC are concentrated in only a few of the countries in the region and very much revolve around recovering value from by-products and waste streams. There are a range of economic, technological, environmental, and social barriers. Opportunities for a CBE are mainly related to the use of waste as raw material (found abundantly in the countries being investigated) and the use of new techniques/technologies. The gaps between the current state and a successful CBE are related to policy, scaling-up, collaborations, and establishing efficient business models. Recommendations for a successful CBE in the region include greater engagement of public actors, investing and developing the local economy, establishing biorefineries and industrial parks, and finding new technological routes for bioresources. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This research is dedicated to formulating a practical problem related to the assignment of oncology clinic routes. The objective is to schedule medical events for patients attending health centers, taking into account the variable demand and limited resources in this field. To achieve this, three types of solutions are considered. The first is an Online Scheduling Algorithm, which simulates a scheduling process based on medical routes and also includes its inverse version. The next is a Mixed-Integer Linear programming (MILP) model. In this case, information is centralized, and patients are scheduled based on their requirements, minimizing delays in their appointments and/or medical treatments. These methodologies are compared with the current mode of assignment used. To test the previously proposed solutions, data provided by the Arturo López Perez Foundation (FALP) will be used.
