Evidence-Based Design (EBD), the judicious and conscientious use of current best evidence to make design decisions for unique projects, is being applied to the design of healthcare facilities with increasing frequency. Because of both the need to replace and expand aging buildings and a retiring baby boom generation, construction of healthcare facilities is currently on the rise in the US. Advocates of EBD argue that its rigorous application will reduce incidence of medical error and improve rates of patient recovery. However, while some promises made by EBD can be scientifically substantiated, design of facilities may not be the only appropriate solution to the problems EBD advocates cite;healthcare facility designers are pressing for EBD adoption, even when a less costly, non-capital program response might be equally effective. This paper suggests that while the error-proofing logic of EBD makes sense, a structured framework for the "Five Whys" should be rigorously implemented by design decision-makers, to ensure that multiple options are considered before final solutions are adopted.

Simulation games may be used to introduce lean principles to those who are considering implementing them. However, they can also function as controlled experiments against which to calibrate a computer model and they can even be adapted to serve as the gold standard of scientific experimentation, the randomized-controlled trial. Results generated from a live playing of the Airplane Game validate an EZStrobe computer-based simulation model representing one part of the game. Close alignment of results suggests that the computer model will likely be able to accurately predict outcomes from similarly structured, real life activities, such as those encountered in a design office or on a construction site.

作者： Joseph F. Yurso President Joseph F. Yurso:is currently director of technical development for Q.E.D. Systems Inc. He received a Bachelors of Science in mechanical engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and an Masters of Science in mechanical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also completed a special management program at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to entering the Navy as an engineering duty officer Mr. Yurso was a refrigeration and air conditioning engineer for the Bureau of Ships. His Navy experience includes engineer officer of a combatant ship submarine type desk quality assurance officer and production officer in naval shipyards and planning officer quality assurance officer and deputy supervisor in Supervisor of Shipbuilding offices. His two command tours were as Supervisor of Shipbuilding Groton Connecticut (1980-81) and Shipyard Commander Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Kittery Maine (1981-84). He was awarded the Legion of Merit for both of these tours. Mr. Yurso has been a member of ASNE since 1964. He is a life member and a sustaining member of the Society. He has been active in several Sections including Charleston Northern and Southern New England and Tidewater. He is a former chairman of the Tidewater Section and was the chairman of the ASNE Fleet Maintenance Symposium in 1991. He served as Council vice president from 1993 to 1996 and as a member of Council for six years. He was a contributing author to the Society's first edition of Naval Engineering and American Sea Power. In 1993 he was awarded the Frank G. Law Award for his dedication and longtime service to the Society. Mr. Yurso maintains memberships in other societies including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Sigma Xi the American Society for Quality Control Naval Institute and Tidewater Association of Service Contractors. He has held registered professional engineer status in two states and is listed inWho's Who in Science and Engineering.

The identification of a nonlinear system with chaotic behavior denoted Chua's oscillator by using fuzzy models intertwined with particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is presented. This hybrid approach is applied to experimental data generated by an inductorless Chua's circuit that consists of an electronic chaotic oscillator. Chua's circuit has been used as a test platform by various scientific and engineering communities related to the study of chaos due its great potencial in technological applications, for instance, telecommunications, cryptography and physics. Fuzzy set theory has been evolved as a powerful modeling tool that can cope with uncertainties and nonlinearities in modeling and identification procedures. The identification of a optimized fuzzy model Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model involves two primary tasks: parameter tuning and structure optimization. The premise part of production rules is optimized here by using the particle swarm optimization method. In turn, least mean squares technique is applied to the consequent part of a T-S fuzzy model. Results indicate PSO method and Least Mean Square technique succeeded in constructing a T-S fuzzy model when dealing with chaotic dynamics obtained through experimental data supplied by inductorless Chua's electronic circuit. © 2007 IEEE.

In the past it has been difficult to implement lean supply chain management in construction because one entity does not have control over an entire supply chain. This research investigates supply chain practices at GS engineering & Construction in Korea. The purpose of this case study is to explore the lean application on rebar supply chain management practice at GS. The paper discusses vertical integration in the supply system to reduce lead time and to improve a supplier's reliability. It also discusses production control system and task standardization for a contractor's planning reliability.

A subcontractor's lean journey: A case study on ilyang

In most cases, owners of companies or general contractors initiate Lean implementation on construction projects. The value in this case study is that it presents a subcontractor successfully implementing Lean construction on its projects. The case study investigated its motivation for making a Lean transformation, the course of its Lean transformation, and the lessons learned through its Lean journey. The study used interviews with twentyfive key personnel, twelve site visits, and an analysis of twelve documents on twelve projects. Further, it shows that while subcontractors have difficulty initiating Lean implementation beyond their own firms due to their lack of influence, it is possible for them to affect this kind of change.

Evolutionary algorithms are heuristic methods that have yielded promising results for solving nonlinear, nondifferentiable, and multi-modal optimization problems in the power systems area. The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm that uses a rather greedy and less stochastic approach to problem solving than do classical evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, and evolution strategies. DE also incorporates an efficient way of self-adapting mutation using small populations. The potentialities of DE are its simple structure, easy use, convergence property, quality of solution, and robustness. This paper proposes a new approach for solving economic load dispatch problems with valve-point effect. The proposed method combines the DE algorithm with the generator of chaos sequences and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) technique to optimize the performance of economic dispatch problems. The DE with chaos sequences is the global optimizer, and the SQP is used to fine-tune the DE run in a sequential manner. The combined methodology and its variants are validated for two test systems consisting of 13 and 40 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects. The proposed combined method outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in solving load dispatch problems with the valve-point effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The problem of failure occurrence in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) tends to increase according to their complexity leading to time-consuming tasks as the localisation and repairing. The occurrence of failures during the exploitation stage can deeply modify the FMS performances or its availability. We want to investigate the maintenance integration into a control-monitoring framework, from the control system's early design stage to the maintenance policies execution, so as to improve production time and minimize unplanned costly breakdowns of FMS. This paper proposes a modular and hierarchic control-monitoring-maintenance architecture (CMM) for FMS based on Petri nets with objects (PNO). These efforts acts as a basis for the control architecture of a robot-driven flexible cell, connected to the Ethernet-TCP/IP. © 2006 IEEE.

Improvement of product strength and press formability of Al-Mg-Si alloy sheets by resistance heat treatment and artificial aging

A treatment consisting of resistance heat treatment and artificial aging was developed to improve the product strength and press formability of Al-Mg-Si alloy sheets having paint bake hardenability used for automobile body panels. In this treatment, the sheets are re-solution heat-treated by resistance heating and water quenching just before the press forming. The formed sheets are artificially aged just after the press forming to increase the product strength. In the experiment, Al-0.60%Si-0.74%Mg (A6061) alloy sheets were chosen. The solution heat treatment of the sheets was sufficiently accomplished by the rapid resistance heat treatment, and the press formability of the sheets was improved. The hardness of formed products is increased by the artificial aging and paint bake hardening. It was found that the present heat treatment is effective in improving the product strength and press formability of the Al-Mg-Si alloy sheets having the paint bake hardenability.
