The role of online platforms to enable the process of industrial symbiosis: An analysis of tools available in the market

The Circular Economy is driven by sustainable strategies of management and the reuse of materials and power to try to decrease the demand of resources and minimize the environmental impacts. Aligned to said perspective, the Industrial Symbiosis (IS) is opposite to the linear production's logic, enabling the sharing of resources, waste, and by-products, that is, the circular flow of power, water, materials, and information. In the last few years, to improve these IS strategies, platforms and tools were created to intermediate this process and facilitate the match between those who demand and offer waste and resources, such as the online waste markets or e-marketplaces. From this perspective, the objective of this study is to evaluate how these tools contributed to the IS process, going beyond the problem of the local factor. For this purpose, ten online platforms, found in the literature, were selected. The analysis was made based on the identification of key elements, which enabled the creation of a list with different types of traded materials, sectors and areas served, how wide was the service, the year when the activities started and, ultimately, the business model adopted. As a result, the evaluation shows that these tools enhance the symbiosis process because they approach the parties and facilitate the identification of synergies. Generally, the use of online platforms widens the geographic scope of the IS processes, enabling the interaction of parties from different places and regions. Was observed that these tools are characterized by the use of intelligent systems, based on algorithms that identify and recommend relations, providing greater assertiveness and speed to the decision-making process. Among the research's findings, we must stress that the IS potential extends much beyond the reuse of waste. There are opportunities for other synergies, such as infrastructure and service sharing. Hoshin Kanri and A3: a proposal for integrating variability into the policy deployment process

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to support the Hoshin Kanri (HK) process taking into account the variance of senior managers’ perspective regarding the relationships among objectives, key performance indicators and continuous improvement (CI) projects. Design/methodology/approach: A four-step methodology incorporates the A3 report into the HK, whose deployment was weighted by the variability among managers’ perception about the importance of each decision. This methodology was applied in a market-leader Mexican auto parts manufacturing company that is undergoing a Lean Manufacturing (LM) implementation. Findings: The results indicate that the proposed methodology provides an easier approach to consolidate different perspectives and weight the importance of CI projects. Moreover, it minimizes the possibility of managerial conflicts or the influence of a determined senior manager on others’ opinions during the deployment and prioritization. Practical implications: This work may be of great interest to managers, consultants and professionals who deal with the implementation of LM and wish to prioritize the importance of CI projects within the perspective of HK. Originality/value: HK provides a systematic approach to integrate strategic management with daily routine management through an adequate deployment of organizational policies to all levels. However, companies usually struggle with several issues such as the style of senior managers and consensus establishment among different opinions, which emphasizes the relevance of the proposed methodology in this study. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Every year, the production of rice straw and cow paunch content is abundant and 80 % of them has not been utilized. This study aimed to determine the potency of ensiling treatment on them in producing bioethanol. The novelty of this study is the utilization of cow paunch content as biomass and source of microbial fiber degradation. In this study, there were six groups of treatments. Bioethanol fermentation used Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Results, ensiling treatment significantly affected (p < 0.001) the changed chemical composition of them and produce ethanol of 40.13–102.84 mg/L. Conclude, ensiling treatment was considered effective ratio for bioethanol production. © 2024

Manufacturing systems’ efficiency depends on the proper assignment of orders to resources. Due to existing interdependencies, the integrated consideration of production, inventory and delivery processes can improve the overall manufacturing performance. However, the integration can result in high complexity and stochasticity. Thus, the three areas are rarely addressed together. Thereof, this paper proposes an integrated simulation-based optimization method to cope with uncertainty and complexity. The proposed approach was compared to a benchmark approach and the obtained results show that the first is able to handle the complexity and stochasticity of real-world manufacturing systems, surpassing the performance of the latter.

Purpose - The purpose of this research was to discover what frameworks for project, portfolio, and innovation management there are and if necessary to propose a new framework useful for SMEs of the construction and building materials industry. Design/methodology/approach - The methodology used in this research was the case study, in which the Canadian construction and building materials industry was selected. The research was based on literature review, interviews, group discussion and survey. Findings - Although there are currently many frameworks available for the three management areas (project, portfolio and innovation), research has shown that a framework that helps companies to follow an approach that supports their business at these three levels is lacking. Originality/value - Innoframe is a new framework for project, portfolio, and innovation management that incorporates a pipeline and two phases as well as a performance management matrix, that can be used for project and portfolio management, to support innovation-driven SMEs. © 2020 Universidade do Minho. Renewable energy technologies integration within industrial districts can boost carbon emissions reduction in the industry sector. The eco-industrial parks model promotes the sustainable use of energy and the application of energy synergies and energy exchanges that can include renewable sources of energy. This paper presents an optimization methodology based on a multi-stakeholder perspective to evaluate energy symbiosis including the integration of renewable energy sources within the parks. The study results in three scenarios providing to managers of single firms and parks relevant information for supporting decision making regarding the economic sustainability and the environmental impacts of the energy synergies. The results show that the optimization of the collective point of view ensures more efficient management of the energy supplied by renewables as well as by firms that can provide an energy surplus.

Complexity measurement in two supply chains with different competitive priorities

Complexity measurement based on the Shannon information entropy is widely used to evaluate variety and uncertainty in supply chains. However, how to use a complexity measurement to support control actions is still an open issue. This article presents a method to calculate the relative complexity, i.e., the relationship between the current and the maximum possible complexity in a Supply Chain. The method relies on unexpected information requirements to mitigate uncertainty. The article studies two real-world Supply Chains of the footwear industry, one competing by cost and quality, the other by flexibility, dependability, and innovation. The second is twice as complex as the first, showing that competitive priorities influence the complexity of the system and that lower complexity does not ensure competitivity. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. The paper presents an overview of cases in which the analysis of the internal structure and mechanical properties of fibre reinforced composites is performed based on the micro-computed X-ray tomography (micro-CT) reconstruction of the composite reinforcement geometry. The management of End-of-Life Tires (ELT) presents a growing concern about environmental pollution that has led to a tightening of legislation worldwide. One approach gaining attention is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which makes producers responsible for the life-cycle management of their products. This work introduces a multi-objective optimization model that supports decision-making through the integration of a techno-political framework to enhance traditional sustainability assessment, studying the impact of introducing collection goals, valuation quotas and emerging valorization technologies. A Chilean case study is presented considering the implementation of pyrolysis plants for the recycling of ELT under the regulatory framework of the EPR Law. The results show that introducing political and technological parameters and variables into economic, environmental, and social objectives facilitates convergence towards a solution, despite the initial opposition of the objectives. Applying the ϵ -constraint method allows to find profitable alternatives for this project. However, those solutions that further reduce the gap and achieve a balance between the three objectives tend to produce negative economic outcomes, suggesting that fully sustainable scenarios may not be economically feasible. Sensitivity analyses highlight the trade-offs involved in balancing economic feasibility in sustainable scenarios with technological and regulatory measures. Considering all the above, it is necessary to strengthen regulatory policies that support reverse logistics, ELT recovery technologies, and the development of decentralized ELT management systems. Lastly, modifications in the collection goals, robust optimization for dealing with uncertainty, and multiple recycling technologies assessment are suggested as future guidelines.

The most recent discoveries in the biochemical field are highlighting the increasingly important role of lipid droplets(LDs)in several regulatory mechanisms in living *** are dynamic organelles and therefore their complete characterization in terms of number,size,spatial positioning and relative distribution in the cell volume can shed light on the roles played by *** now,fluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are assessed as the gold standard methods for identifying LDs due to their high sensitivity and ***,such methods generally only provide 2D assays and partial ***,both can be destructive and with low productivity,thus limiting analysis of large cell numbers in a *** we demonstrate for the first time the capability of 3D visualization and the full LD characterization in high-throughput with a tomographic phase-contrast flow-cytometer,by using ovarian cancer cells and monocyte cell lines as models.A strategy for retrieving significant parameters on spatial correlations and LD 3D positioning inside each cell volume is *** information gathered by this new method could allow more in depth understanding and lead to new discoveries on how LDs are correlated to cellular functions.
