Public Safety Decision-Making in the Context of Smart and Sustainable Cities

Prominent urbanization forces governments to rethink their management processes, incorporate new technologies and ensure quality of life through practices aligned with the concepts of smart and sustainable cities. With a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with commanders of two local police departments, this study investigated information orientation in the strategic decision-making process in the area of public safety in a small Brazilian city. The police departments have a limited ICT infrastructure to support the strategic decision-making process because their information systems are not connected. The results show that although the city of Pato Branco (Brazil) is considered a smart city in the area of public security, there are limited resources in several aspects of the police departments for the effective management of their ICT infrastructures. The impact of resource constraints reflects throughout the entire information use lifecycle - identification, collection, organization, processing, etc. - which fuels the strategic decision-making process. The implantation of an operations center could significantly reduce the effects of the problems identified in this research and further research may reveal the operational, technical, economic and financial viability of this proposal.

In the current industrial revolution, additive manufacturing (AM) embodies a promising technology that can enhance the effectiveness, adaptability, and competitiveness of supply chains (SCs). Moreover, it facilitates the development of distributed SCs, thereby enhancing product availability, inventory levels, and lead time. However, the wide adoption of AM in industrial SCs creates various challenges, leading to new difficulties for SC design. In this context, this paper proposes a new design approach to AM SCs using optimization methods. More specifically, the proposed approach, comprising the pmedian and mixed-integer linear programming models, considers the decision of deploying productive resources (3D printers) in specific locations of generic spare part SCs. The approach was evaluated in a real-world use case of an elevator maintenance service provider. The obtained results demonstrated the promising capabilities of the proposed design approach in managing the challenges arising from the forthcoming widespread use of 3D printers in manufacturing SCs. © 2020, CC-BY-NC-ND.

Effects of corrective insole on leg muscle activation and lower extremity alignment in rice farmers with pronated foot: a preliminary report

Background: Execution of strenuous activities in conjunction with slippery and viscous muddy working terrain in rice cultivation leads to a high prevalence of farmer musculoskeletal disorders and malalignments. Recommended intervention strategies originally designed for congenitally disabled individuals may also be applicable to farmers, including simple corrective wedges to reduce foot eversion. The objective of the present study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of the effects of corrective wedges on lower extremity muscle activity and alignment when subjects stood on flat rigid ground or muddy terrain, simulating typical work conditions encountered by the unique but populous Thai rice farming workforce. Methods: Nine healthy farmers with pronated feet were recruited to participate and wedges were custom fabricated for each farmer based on physical therapy assessment and use of rapid prototyping techniques. Participants were asked to stand barefoot or with wedges on the two surface types. Results: Results revealed foot pronation and knee valgus to improve (ranging, on average between 5.5 and 16.1 degrees) when participants were equipped with corrective wedges. The muscle activity of the peroneus longus and the tibialis anterior increased for muddy terrain, as compared with the rigid surface. In general, the wedges induced less tibialis anterior activity and greater peroneus longus activity, compared to when participants were standing barefoot. An elevation in evertor muscle activity may reflect stretching of the shortened muscle as a result of the reduced degree of foot pronation. Conclusions: Findings demonstrate potential benefits of corrective insole usage for farmers with pronated feet, including improved lower extremity alignment and invertor muscle activity reduction for both rigid and muddy terrains. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Response time can be considered as a crucial indicator in research involving transport. This indicator usually appears associated with SCM, integrating processes related to the product design and its consequent delivery as part of operations management. This concept may be adequate for the management of EMS operations: response time is defined as the interval between receiving a telephone call at an EMS agency and the arrival of an ambulance and a team at the location of an incident and is a valid indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of the EMS. The objective of this study was to analyze the response time in the EMS called SAMU 192 Southwest of Paraná, a Brazilian EMS agency. From the concepts provided by the literature, this research was able to identify limitations in the internal processes, ICT structure and information quality that must support decision making for ambulance dispatch in SAMU 192 Southwest of Paraná. This set of constraints compromises not only the time taken to respond to emergency calls, but the responsiveness of the EMS as a whole. Further research should be conducted following the steps described in detail in the methodology. Thus, it is a work in progress and presents the perspective for additional research.

Spare Parts Replacement Policy Based on Chaotic Models

Poisson point processes are widely used to model the consumption of spare parts. However, when the items have very low consumption rates, the historical sample sizes are too small. This paper presents a modelling technique for spare parts policies in the case of items with a low consumption rate. We propose the use of chaotic models derived from the well-known chaotic processes logistic map and Hénon attractor to assess the behaviour of a set of five medium voltage motors supplying four drives in the rolling mill of a steelmaking plant. Supported by the chaotic models, we conclude that the company needs an additional motor to ensure full protection against shortages. © 2018

A case study on continuous process control based on fuzzy logic and supported by expert knowledge is proposed. The aim is to control the coal-grinding operations in a cement manufacturing plant. Fuzzy logic is based on linguistic variables that emulate human judgment and can solve complex modeling problems subject to uncertainty or incomplete information. Fuzzy controllers can handle control problems when an accurate model of the process is unavailable, ill-defined, or subject to excessive parameter variations. The system implementation resulted in productivity gains and energy consumption reductions of 3% and 5% respectively, in line with the literature related to similar applications. © 2018

The safety of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) remains a critical challenge for their clinical translation. To address this, we developed a machine learning (ML) framework that predicts NP toxicity both and , leveraging physicochemical properties and experimental conditions. A curated cytotoxicity dataset was used to train and validate binary classification models, with top-performing models undergoing explainability analysis to identify key determinants of toxicity and establish structure-toxicity relationships. External testing with diverse inorganic NPs validated the predictive accuracy of the framework for settings. To enable organ-specific toxicity predictions , we integrated a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model into the ML pipeline to quantify NP exposure across organs. Retraining the ML models with PBPK-derived exposure metrics yielded robust predictions of organ-specific nanotoxicity, further validating the framework. This PBPK-informed ML approach can thus serve as a potential alternative approach to streamline NP safety assessment, enabling the rational design of safer NPs and expediting their clinical translation.

This article aims to analyze the innovation scores of IT companies and their respective clusters, resulting in a tool for constructing knowledge about these companies and gaining useful information for comparison purposes, since few studies are focused on innovation in Brazilian IT companies, especially microenterprises. A case study methodology was used in this research, and to measure innovation, the model proposed by Edison, Ali and Tonkar (2013) was used. The target audience was the LPA of information technology companies in southwest Paraná, being composed of 50 companies divided into 3 clusters. The data collection was based on a survey with 43 questions built according to the Likert Scale. As a result of the application of the Kruskall-Wallis test, with 5% significance, it was observed that there is a difference between the innovation scores of each cluster, with Clusters 1 and 3 having higher scores. As for the relationship between innovation and turnover, the Spearman Correlation test, with 5% significance, showed that there is a moderate relationship between innovation scores and company turnover. Measuring innovation, both individually and in clusters, is important in the information technology sector because it allows management to see weaknesses and strengths, and implement improvements and changes that ensure increased competitiveness and permanence in the market. © 2017 DEStech Publications. In accordance with Industry 4.0, data should be used for process and/or system integration, including the decision-making process. In this context, this paper aims to relate the process of decision-making with process mining through concept maps, assisting the areas of Data engineering and Analytics. To do so, some Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making/Analysis (MCDM/A) methods will be addressed in order to conceptually highlight the relationship between knowledge and decision dimensions. As a result, the definitions about these fields of study allow perceiving an information and knowledge conciliation approach promoted by the integrated view of process mining and MCDM/A methods. © 2017 The Authors
