Facial expressions are at the heart of everyday social interaction and communication. Their absence, such as in Virtual Reality settings, or due to conditions like Parkinson’s disease, can significantly impact communication. Electromyography (EMG)-based facial action unit recognition (AUR) offers a sensitive and privacy-preserving alternative to video-based methods. However, while prior research has focused on peak intensity action units (AUs), there has been a lack of research on EMG-based AURs for lightweight recording of subtle expressions at multiple muscle sites. This study evaluates EMG-based AUR for both low- and high-intensity expressions across eight AUs using two types of mobile electrodes connected to the Biosignal Plux system. The results of four subjects indicate that even limited data may be sufficient to train reasonably accurate AUR models. Larger snap-on electrodes performed better for peak-intensity AUs, but smaller electrodes resulted in higher performance for low-intensity expressions. These findings suggest that EMG-based AUR is viable for subtle expressions from short data segments and that smaller electrodes hold promise for future applications. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Autocalibration for Creating 2D/3D Displays on Complex Geometric Surfaces

Geometric calibration methods tend to rely on precalibrated cameras or real calibration targets. Here we explore the chal-lenge of achieving a sufficiently accurate projector system calibration for complex projection mapping tasks that can rely on neither precalibrated cameras nor calibration targets. Virtual scene models can take the place of a real calibration target for the purpose of providing scene information that is used to refine geometric estimates. Refinement of the display parameters aims to reduce the reprojection error, or the error between the theoretical coordinate (generated from the projection of the scene estimate coordinate by the estimated parameters) and the actual coordinate (obtained from pixel cor-respondences). For Christie installations, the final reprojection error of each pixel should be less than 1 pixel. Mystique was not always so capable. Christie’s research department, Christie labs, has a history of creating solutions for new projection concepts. Part of that strategy has been a long partnership with the University of Waterloo, particularly the Vision and Image Processing (VIP) lab in systems Design engineering. Graduate students study computer vision and machine learning—topics related to problems often at the heart of techniques—which can be used to bring new ideas, meth-ods, and solutions to Mystique and, by extension, to Christie’s customers. Years of investment in research and development, including partnership with the VIP lab and others, have enabled Mystique to handle challenges beyond any other projec-tor-alignment solution. Rendering service, which typically orchestrates screen display and UI through Vertical Synchronization (VSync), is an indispensable system service for user experiences of smartphone OSes (e.g., Android, OpenHarmony, and iOS). The recent trend of large high-frame-rate screens, stunning visual effects, and physics-based animations has placed unprecedented pressure on the VSync-based rendering architecture, leading to higher frame drops and longer rendering latency. This paper proposes Decoupled Vertical Synchronization (D-VSync), which decouples execution and displaying in the rendering service. D-VSync allows frames to be rendered a number of VSync periods before being physically displayed on the screen. The key insight behind D-VSync to resolve the limitation of VSync is that, the decoupling enables sporadic long frames to utilize the computational power saved by common short frames, therefore providing a larger time window to tolerate workload fluctuations. Evaluation results of 75 common OS use cases and apps on OpenHarmony (Mate 40 Pro, Mate 60 Pro), 25 popular apps on Android (Google Pixel 5), and simulations of 15 mobile games show that compared to VSync, D-VSync on average reduces frame drops by 72.7%, user-perceptible stutters by 72.3%, and rendering latency by 31.1%, with only 0.13%-0.37% more power consumption. D-VSync has been integrated into HarmonyOS NEXT. © 2025 ACM.

Understanding cellular behavior requires knowledge of both metabolism and its regulation. While omics data provides clues about cellular activity, integrating it with traditional models (GEMs) can be challenging. Conversely, machine learning (ML) models learn directly from data but lack a mechanistic foundation. Recently, a new framework to embed a GEM in a neural network has been proposed, opening the door for developing of hybrid models that combine the strengths of mechanistic and data-driven approaches. In this work, we present a novel Metabolic-Informed Neural Network (MINN) that integrates also multi-omics data as inputs. We apply this MINN to predict metabolic fluxes in Escherichia coli under different growth rates and gene knockouts. We demonstrate that, while the measured fluxes lie outside the feasible space of the GEM, incorporating this information helps prevent over-fitting, a common challenge in ML with limited data. © 2024, EUROSIS-ETI. ChatGPT is a language model based on Generative AI. Existing research work on ChatGPT focused on its use in various domains. However, its potential for Sign Language Translation (SLT) is yet to be explored. This paper addresses this void. Therefore, we present GPT's evolution aiming a retrospective analysis of the improvements to its architecture for SLT. We explore ChatGPT's capabilities in translating different sign languages in paving the way to better accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Our experimental results indicate that ChatGPT can accurately translate from English to American (ASL), Australian (AUSLAN), and British (BSL) sign languages and from Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) to English with only one prompt iteration. However, the model failed to translate from Arabic to ArSL and ASL, AUSLAN, and BSL to Arabic. Consequently, we present challenges and derive insights for future research directions. © 2023 IEEE.

The Internet of Things (IoT) revolutionizes smart city domains such as healthcare, transportation, industry, and education. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is gaining prominence, particularly in smart hospitals and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). The vast volume of data generated by IoMT devices should be analyzed in real-time for health surveillance, prognosis, and prediction of diseases. Current approaches relying on Cloud computing to provide the necessary computing and storage capabilities do not scale for these latency-sensitive applications. Edge computing emerges as a solution by bringing cloud services closer to IoMT devices. This paper introduces SmartEdge, an AI-powered smart healthcare end-to-end integrated edge and cloud computing system for diabetes prediction. This work addresses latency concerns and demonstrates the efficacy of edge resources in healthcare applications within an end-to-end system. The system leverages various risk factors for diabetes prediction. We propose an Edge and Cloud-enabled framework to deploy the proposed diabetes prediction models on various configurations using edge nodes and main cloud servers. Performance metrics are evaluated using, latency, accuracy, and response time. By using ensemble machine learning voting algorithms we can improve the prediction accuracy by 5% versus a single model prediction. © 2024 IEEE.

Feature models are the de-facto standard in product line engineering to capture the commonalities and variability of systems. However, feature models provide little user guidance during configuration and are unable to represent configuration sequences. A configuration sequence refers to the specific order and combination of features that can be selected when configuring a product line. While mechanisms, such as staged configuration and configuration workflows, exist, we argue that the effort to implement these mechanisms does not pay off for small feature models. This paper motivates the use of configuration sequences for feature models to support better user guidance even for a single feature model. We highlight the need for such user guidance and configuration sequences with a real-world use case. © 2024 ACM.

engineering Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPSs) heavily relies on Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs), which are tailored to a specific class of problems inherent to CPPSs. DSLs enable non-programming experts to solve problems in their domain, such as modeling production processes, implementing control software, or managing the variability of production systems. A DSL ecosystem encompasses the entire infrastructure (e.g., libraries and tools) built around its language and contributes to the successful and easy adoption thereof by domain experts. We present a maturity evaluation model for DSL ecosystems serving two aims: to developers, it reveals missing but essential aspects of the ecosystem, and users (e.g., industrial companies) can evaluate the maturity of a DSL ecosystem. We propose criteria to evaluate the maturity of DSL ecosystems and apply them to existing, publicly available DSLs which have been adopted in CPPSs. The results demonstrate that all components of the model are covered and they allow for deriving hypotheses about DSL ecosystems used in CPPSs. © 2023 IEEE.

Starting to learn programming is often perceived as being quite tedious by students at the bachelor level. Many programming courses thus face high drop-out rates and moderate results for those who pass. This problem is exacerbated when teaching programming to students enrolled in non-computer science curricula. To overcome these issues, we have developed a novel didactic concept based on peer learning, tutoring, dedicated teaching, and learning material that supports individuality and competency-based learning. Our current focus lies on teaching basic programming principles, but to further support our students and foster a positive learning experience, we want to learn more about the difficulties they are facing, particularly with respect to best practices, coding conventions, and code quality. We, therefore, performed a static code analysis of homework assignments of students participating in our introductory programming course for two consecutive years. We analyzed over 13,000 Java files and more than 400,000 lines of Java code to identify common code quality issues faced by our students. Our analysis shows that the majority of rule violations are related to coding style. The violations do not differ much with respect to the topics covered in the homework assignments, and hardly change over time. The more lines of code the students write, the more rules are violated. Based on our findings we present concrete recommendations on how to support novice programmers in improving their code quality.
