Multi-tenant service-based systems (SBSs) have become a major paradigm in software engineering in the cloud environment. Instead of serving a single end-user, a multitenant SBS provides multiple tenants with similar and yet customised functionalities with potentially different quality-of service (QoS) values. Thus, existing approaches to service selection for single-tenant SBSs are no longer suitable. Furthermore, the target multi-tenancy maturity level also needs to be considered in the service selection approach for an SBS. In this paper, we propose three novel QoS-aware service selection approaches for composing multi-tenant SBSs that achieve three different multi-tenancy maturity levels. Extensive and comprehensive experiments are conducted and the experimental results show that our approaches outperform the existing approach in both effectiveness and efficiency.

Most existing routing algorithms assume wireless nodes use maximal transmission power or set up the power at the beginning of the network configuration. These static approaches potentially introduce signal interference that can be mitigated through power control. In this paper, we propose a Joint Channel assignment, stable Routing and adaptive Power control (JCRP) approach that dynamically controls the transmission power to avoid the channel interference for improving the channel utility. Our JCRP allows a node to control its transmission power to a certain value at which it has a longest channel conflict-free time. Besides, we propose a novel routing metric integrated selecting stability (ISS) to measure the quality of links, which considers node mobility and channel interference, together with the dynamical power control. The simulation results demonstrate that our JCRP significantly outperforms the related routing algorithms in terms of network throughput.

Delay defects under high temperature have been one of the most critical factors to affect the reliability of computer systems, and the current test methods don't address this problem properly. In this paper, a temperature-aware software-based self-testing (SBST) technique is proposed to self-heat the processors within a high temperature range and effectively test delay faults under high temperature. First, it automatically generates high-quality test programs through automatic test instruction generation (ATIG), and avoids over-testing caused by nonfunctional patterns. Second, it exploits two effective powerintensive program transformations to self-heat up the processors internally. Third, it applies a greedy algorithm to search the optimized schedule of the test templates in order to generate the test program while making sure that the temperature of the processor under test is within the specified range. Experimental results show that the generated program is successful to guarantee delay test within the given temperature range, and achieves high test performance with functional patterns.

Mutation analysis is a testing strategy that consists of using supporting tools to seed artificial faults in the original code of a software under test, generating faulty programs (“mutants”) that are supposed to produce incorrect outputs. Novice programmers suffer of a wide range of deficits due to defective training processes. We argue that the incorporation of experiences on mutation testing in programming courses adds valuable knowledge to the learning process. In this paper we evaluate the effects of using mutation testing to improve the learning process of students in programming courses. We present results of experiments and analysis involving undergraduate students. These experiments are the continuation of a previous work in which we raise empirical evidences that the adequate incorporation of mutation testing in programming courses contributes to form an effective environment that fosters learning. To do so, we provide a mutation testing tool to promote the practice of mutation testing by novice programmers. Through practical experiences and several analysis survey we measured the effects of using the mutation testing criterion to teach programming. In addition, we collected the opinion of senior students who already knew mutation testing concepts about their opinion on the usage of mutation concepts to teach novice programmers. Our findings reveal that the effective use of mutation analysis concepts contributes to the learning process, making students see the code as a product under development that is the result of a careful manual coding process which they need for measuring and predicting the effect of each command. The main contributions discussed in this paper are: (1) presenting results of an empirical analysis involving undergraduate students, thus giving us preliminary evidence on the effects of the novel practice; (2) exposing possible practices to explore mutation testing in programming classes, highlighting the limitations and strengths of such

Minimally invasive surgical techniques are becoming popular due to their enhanced patient benefits. Less invasive procedures can be achieved with the use of wireless Medical Capsule Robots (MCRs). MCRs are low powered and small in size and can be used for physiological parameter monitoring, therapy delivery, and biopsy sampling. Designing MCRs from the ground up is a costly and time consuming process. In this work, we present a flexible modular architecture to facilitate the design of MCRs and propose using TinyOS as the operating system. To assess the architecture and validate the feasibility of TinyOS, we implement a closed-loop control of a sensor-actuator system and compare the results with a traditional MCR built based on an 8051 microcontroller (MCU) programmed in plain C. Similar performances from the two approaches lead us to conclude that TinyOS is a valid option to implement a modular architecture for designing MCRs. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Emotion recognition from thermal infrared images using deep Boltzmann machine

Facial expression and emotion recognition from thermal infrared images has attracted more and more attentions in recent years. However, the features adopted in current work are either temperature statistical parameters extracted from the facial regions of interest or several hand-crafted features that are commonly used in visible spectrum. Till now there are no image features specially designed for thermal infrared images. In this paper, we propose using the deep Boltzmann machine to learn thermal features for emotion recognition from thermal infrared facial images. First, the face is located and normalized from the thermal infrared im- ages. Then, a deep Boltzmann machine model composed of two layers is trained. The parameters of the deep Boltzmann machine model are further fine-tuned for emotion recognition after pre-tralning of feature learning. Comparative experimental results on the NVIE database demonstrate that our approach outperforms other approaches using temperature statistic features or hand-crafted features borrowed from visible domain. The learned features from the forehead, eye, and mouth are more effective for discriminating valence dimension of emotion than other facial areas. In addition, our study shows that adding unlabeled data from other database during training can also improve feature learning performance.

Much of the knowledge in technology domains is "how-to" knowledge that offers solutions to problems, or means to achieve desired ends. In previous work we illustrated how i*-based goal modeling can be used to map out the state of the art in a technical domain, detect gaps, and recognize advances. Our recent work, which includes user studies, suggests that the full expressiveness of i* may not be necessary for mapping know-how. In this paper, we propose ME-maps, a know-how mapping technique inspired by, but simpler than i*, with the aim of easier and wider adoption. We propose to use CmapTools, a widely-used platform for concept mapping, to support the collaborative construction and sharing of know-how maps. Lessons learned from this initiative could potentially inform the ongoing evolution and refinement of i*.

Most present research into facial expression recognition focuses on the visible spectrum, which is sen- sitive to illumination change. In this paper, we focus on in- tegrating thermal infrared data with visible spectrum images for spontaneous facial expression recognition. First, the ac- tive appearance model AAM parameters and three defined head motion features are extracted from visible spectrum im- ages, and several thermal statistical features are extracted from infrared （IR） images. Second, feature selection is per- formed using the F-test statistic. Third, Bayesian networks BNs and support vector machines SVMs are proposed for both decision-level and feature-level fusion. Experiments on the natural visible and infrared facial expression （NVIE） spontaneous database show the effectiveness of the proposed methods, and demonstrate thermal 1R images＇ supplementary role for visible facial expression recognition.

Minimal exposure path algorithms for directional sensor networks

As a fundamental problem of wireless sensor networks, the minimal exposure path problem corresponding to the sensor network's worst-case coverage plays an important role in the applications for detecting intrusions. However, most existing works about minimal exposure path are based on omnidirectional sensors. In contrast, this paper studies the minimal exposure path problem for two different types of directional sensing models: the binary sector model and directional sensitivity model. For the binary sector model, we construct a special Voronoi diagram, called sector centroids-based Voronoi diagram, to transform the minimal exposure path problem from a continuous geometric problem into a discrete geometric problem. By using the sector centroids-based Voronoi diagram, we develop an approximate algorithm to find the minimal exposure path in the sensors deployment field. For the directional sensitive model, we formulate the minimal exposure path problem by using two sensing intensity functions: all-sensor intensity function and maximum-sensor intensity function and then generate two weighted grids to convert the minimal exposure path problem into two discrete geometric problems. On the basis of the aforementioned weighted grids, we also develop two approximation algorithms to find the minimal exposure path for the directional sensitive model.
