Packet loss is one of the most important factors in degrading Voice over IP (VoIP) perceived call quality. Forward Error Correction (FEC) is a powerful technique for transmitting audio streams over the IP network to decrease the effect of packet loss. Although these method reduces the effect of packet loss, it increases the bandwidth and delay in order to recover from the lost packets. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive FEC mechanism for voice calls based on the generated codewords from a Reed-Solomon (RS) encoder. This mechanism chooses the optimum RS code from a family of codes to improve the conversational call quality. Our proposed mechanism is able to switch between different codes during the call to account for the variation of the network conditions including packet loss and delay. We have deduced the proposed algorithm by performing subjective mean opinion score (MOS) testing based on an interactive assessment tests. We show that our adaptive algorithm outperforms fixed RS codes under highly varying network conditions.

Automated Essay Grading (AEG) is defined as a computer technology that evaluates and scores written prose. A number of AEG systems have been developed since the 1960s and in most of them, an ad-hoc or generalized approach is used to grade spelling even though it is an important element of an essay-scoring rubric. Existing approaches do not therefore give an accurate representation or measure of spelling in essays. According to the rubric-based scoring method used in the National Assessment Program "Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in Australia, spelling is marked in three steps" first, by identifying the correct and incorrect words in the essay;second, by categorizing each word based on the difficulty level into one of four classes: Simple, Common, Difficult or Challenging, and counting the number of correct and incorrect words in each category;finally, by using the pre-defined NAPLAN rubric scale to assign the mark. Only a small number of existing AEG systems can be used for rubric-based scoring, and none can be used to grade spelling according to the NAPLAN rubric. In this paper, we address this shortcoming in the existing literature and present an innovative approach to automatically mark spelling using rubric based scoring. We develop two algorithms based on the rules and heuristics of the English language to formulize the rubric for spelling and then implement these algorithms in Java language and perform a series of evaluations of our system using an essay dataset. Our results are very promising, even though it is the first system of this kind.

The recommender systems field has been well developed in the last few years to provide item recommendations to related users. Existing recommendation approaches, however, assume that an item is described by a single value or a vector. Unfortunately, some items in real world applications, such as telecom products, could have a tree structure. This paper aims to handle this issue by developing a comprehensive fuzzy tree similarity measure. The fuzzy tree similarity measure compares both the concepts and values in two trees of items. The focus of this study is primarily on the fuzzy value similarity between two trees. In the similarity measure, each attribute is associated with a set of linguistic terms to express the value granularly. The node values are first transformed to membership vectors related to the linguistic terms, and the values of the conceptual corresponding nodes are then compared. These local similarities are aggregated into the final fuzzy value similarity between the two trees. A telecom product recommendation case study shows the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy tree similarity measure and its applicability for telecom product recommendations.

Conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) is difficult and time-consuming for an experienced researcher, and even more so for a novice graduate student. With a better understanding of the most common difficulties in the SLR process, mentors will be better prepared to guide novices through the process. This understanding will help researchers have more realistic expectations of the SLR process and will help mentors guide novices through its planning, execution, and documentation phases. Consequently, the objectives of this work are to identify the most difficult and time-consuming phases of the SLR process. Using data from two sources - - 52 responses to an online survey sent to all authors of SLRs published in software engineering venues and qualitative experience reports from 8 PhD students who conducted SLRs as part of a course - - we identified specific difficulties related to each phase of the SLR process. Our findings highlight the importance of planning, teamwork, and mentoring by an experienced researcher throughout the process. The paper also identifies implications for the teaching of the SLR process. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, an invariant algorithm for object recognition is proposed by using the Radon and Fourier transforms. It has been shown that this algorithm is invariant to the translation and rotation of pattern images. The scaling invariance can be achieved by the standard normalization techniques. Our algorithm works even when the center of the pattern object is not aligned well. This advantage is because the Fourier spectra are invariant to spatial shift in the radial direction whereas existing methods assume the centroids are aligned exactly. Experimental results show that the proposed method is better than the Zernike's moments, the dual-tree complex wavelet (DTCWT) moments, and the auto-correlation wavelet moments for one aircraft database and one shape database. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In the past two decades, Support Vector Machine (SVM) has become one of the most famous classification techniques. The optimal parameters in an SVM kernel are normally obtained by cross validation, which is a time-consuming process. In this paper, we propose to learn the parameters in an SVM kernel while solving the dual optimization problem. The new optimization problem can be solved iteratively as follows: (a) Fix the parameters in an SVM kernel;solve the variables α i in the dual optimization problem. (b) Fix the variables α i;solve the parameters in an SVM kernel by using the Newton-Raphson method. It can be shown that (a) can be optimized by using standard methods in training the SVM, while (b) can be solved iteratively by using the Newton-Raphson method. Experimental results conducted in this paper show that our proposed technique is feasible in practical pattern recognition applications. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In this paper, we perform sparse signal analysis by using the Ramanujan Sums (RS). The RS are orthogonal in nature and therefore offer excellent energy conservation. Our analysis shows that the RS can compress the energy of a periodic impulse chain signal into fewer number of RS coefficients than the Fourier transform (FT). In addition, the RS are faster than the FT in computation time because we can calculate the RS basis functions only once and save them to a file. We can retrieve these RS basis functions for our calculation instead of computing them online. To process a signal of 128 samples, we spend 1.0 millisecond for the RS and 5.82 milliseconds for the FT by using our unoptimized Matlab code. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Program comprehension is an essential activity to perform software maintenance and evolution. Comprehensibility often encompasses the analysis of individual logical units, called features, which are often scattered through many program modules. Understanding how the feature code is implemented along the software evolution history is essential, for instance, to perform refactoring activities. However, existing tools do not provide means to comprehend the feature code evolution. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper presents a tool called Source Miner Evolution (SME) that provides multiple interactive and coordinated views to comprehend feature code evolution. SME implements a feature-sensitive comparison of multiple program versions. Our usability assessment with experienced developers indicated that SME allows them to efficiently perform recurring comprehension tasks on evolving feature code. The developers' performance was influenced by the combination of visual SME mechanisms, such as colors, tool tips and menu-popup interactions over the features' code elements.

ITU-T recommendation G.107 introduced the E-model, a repeatable way to assess if a network is prepared to carry a VoIP call or not. Various studies show that the E-model is complex with many factors to be used in monitoring purposes. Consequently, simplified versions of the E-model have been proposed to simplify the calculations and focus on the most important factors required for monitoring the call quality. In this paper, we propose simple correction to a simplified E-model;we show how to calculate the correction coefficients for 4 common codecs (G.711, G.723.1, G.726 and G.729A) and then we show that its predictions better match PESQ scores by implementing it in a monitoring application.

This paper addresses the problem of managing business process changes at the design level within a complex business process repository. We argue that a formal process eco-systems view can provide a particular useful solution to the problem in which their inter-process relationships can be properly described. Our intent is to build a modular infrastructure to support change management in process eco-systems by leveraging a change propagation approach that would maintain the inter-process relationships. This permits us to propagate the changes, made on a particular process, to the rest of the processes for maintaining the relationship equilibrium of such eco-system. Our experimental evaluation suggests that the propagation of change can be efficiently achieved, which suggests that the real source of complexity stems from the redesign of individual models. © 2012 IEEE.
