It is common practice for requirements traceability research to consider method call dependencies within the source code (e.g., fan-in/fan-out analyses). However, current approaches largely ignore the role of data. The question this paper investigates is whether data dependencies have similar relationships to requirements as do call dependencies. For example, if two methods do not call one another, but do have access to the same data then is this information relevant? We formulated several research questions and validated them on three large software systems, covering about 120 KLOC. Our findings are that data relationships are roughly equally relevant to understanding the relationship to requirements traces than calling dependencies. However, most interestingly, our analyses show that data dependencies complement call dependencies. These findings have strong implications on all forms of code understanding, including trace capture, maintenance, and validation techniques (e.g., information retrieval).

A company or an organization may have a number of business processes depending on its size, represented in a particular business process modeling language such as *** may have inter-operating relationships, i.e. one process may depend on other processes by exchanging messages in order to achieve its objective(s). One of the process improvements is to optimize its processing time, e.g. by parallelizing some tasks within a particular process. Optimizing processes individually without considering any inter-operating relationship between them will potentially produce a process which is not consistent with the original one w.r.t. the pre-defined business rules. This paper introduces a novel approach of optimizing process portfolio both locally and globally by considering inter-operating relationships between process models as well as taking into account the minimal change strategy. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011.

In the real applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), a great number of sensors are distributed in the region of interest in order to monitor the environment. The area covered and the energy consumed by the sensors are two key problems of the WSNs. There are several efforts which tried to find the coverage percentage of the network, and eliminate the redundant sensors;however, none of them have considered the presence of obstacles in the region of interest. In this paper, we propose a new efficient algorithm to compute the area covered by the sensors in a region containing transparent and opaque obstacles, and study the problem of detecting and eliminating redundant sensors in order to improve energy efficiency, while preserving the network's coverage. The proposed algorithm uses computational geometry techniques and is applicable for both homogeneous and heterogeneous WSNs. Also, the obstacles can have arbitrary polygonal shapes which are placed in arbitrary locations. © 2011 MIPRO.

A critical aspect of applications with wireless sensor networks is network lifetime. Therefore, judicious power management and scheduling can effectively extend operational time. One way to prolong the network lifetime is to divide the network into cover sets, where each cover set is capable of monitoring all targets. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm which considers both residual energy and overlapping target to generate the maximum number of cover sets. Additionally, the algorithm can generate both disjoint and non-disjoint cover sets. Also, the proposed algorithm does not need information about targets which each sensor covers, or the sensors which a target is covered by them, in advance. Through simulation, we show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other similar algorithms in term of execution time, while it produces comparable results in term of number of generated cover sets. © 2011 MIPRO.

The information overload problem results in the under-use of some existing e-Government services. Recommender systems have proven to be an effective solution to the information overload problem by providing users with information and services specific to their needs, rather than an undifferentiated mass of information. This paper focuses on how e-Governments can support businesses, which are seeking ‘one-to-one’ e-services, on the problem of finding adequate business partners. For this purpose, a Hybrid Semantic-enhanced Collaborative Filtering (HSeCF) recommendation approach to provide personalized Government-to-Business (G2B) e-services, and in particular, business partner recommendation e-services for Small to Medium Businesses is proposed. Experimental results on two data sets, MovieLens and BizSeeker, show that the proposed HSeCF approach significantly outperforms the benchmark item-based CF algorithms, especially in dealing with sparsity or cold-start item problems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

Background: software agents are becoming increasingly common in the engineering of software systems. We explore the use of humans in creating benchmarks for the evaluation of software agents. In our case studies, we address the domain of instructable software agents (e-students) as proposed by the Bootstrapped Learning project [Oblinger, 2006]. Aim: Our aim is to define and refine requirements, problem solving strategies, and evaluation methodologies for e-students, paving the way for rigorous experiments comparing e-student performance with human benchmarks. Method: Little was known about what factors would be critical, so our empirical approach is exploratory case studies. In two studies covering three distinct groups, we use human subjects to develop an evaluation curriculum for e-students, collecting quantitative data through online quizzes and tests and qualitative data through observation. Results: Though we collect quantitative data, our most important results are qualitative. We uncover and address several intrinsic challenges in comparing software agents with humans, including the greater semantic understanding of humans, the eidetic memory of e-students, and the importance of various study parameters (including timing issues and lesson complexity) to human performance. Conclusions: Important future work will be controlled experiments based on the experience of these case studies. These will provide benchmark human performance results for specific problem domains for comparison to e-student results.

Background: Continuously calibrated and validated parametric models are necessary for realistic software estimates. However, in practice, variations in model adoption and usage patterns introduce a great deal of local bias in the resultant historical data. Such local bias should be carefully examined and addressed before the historical data can be used for calibrating new versions of parametric models. Aims: In this study, we aim at investigating the degree of such local bias in a cross-company historical dataset, and assessing its impacts on parametric estimation model's performance. Method: Our study consists of three parts: 1) defining a method for measuring and analyzing the local bias associated with individual organization data subset in the overall dataset;2) assessing the impacts of local bias on the estimation performance of COCOMO II 2000 model;3) performing a correlation analysis to verify that local bias can be harmful to the performance of a parametric estimation model. Results: Our results show that the local bias negatively impacts the performance of parametric model. Our measure of local bias has a positive correlation with the performance by statistical importance. Conclusion: Local calibration by using the whole multi-company data would get worse performance. The influence of multi-company data could be defined by local bias and be measured by our *** © 2011 ACM.

In any organization, because of the importance of management responsibility and its effect on efficiency improvement, the selection of the appropriate person as a manager is one of the important decision making subjects. This paper proposes a new fuzzy multiple attribute-based decision support system (DSS) for choosing suitable managers as such a selection may involve both quantitative and qualitative assessment attributes. There are many fuzzy ranking methods available to solve multi-attribute decision making (MADM) problems. Some are more suitable than other for particular decision problems. The proposed DSS has ability to choose the most appropriate fuzzy ranking method for solving given MADM problem, based on the type of attributes and the size of the problem, considering the least computation and time consumption for ranking alternatives. A DSS software prototype has been developed on the basis of the proposed DSS which can be applied for solving every FMADM problem which needs to rank some alternatives according to some attributes. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

For automotive manufacturers and tier-1 suppliers, the upcoming safety standard ISO 26262 results in new requirements for the development of embedded electronics and software. In particular, the variety of driver assistance systems that autonomously influence the driving dynamics of a vehicle may have a high risk potential and require development in accordance with the normative guidelines. But especially for those systems whose function is typically not based solely on hardware but on complex software algorithms, safety certification can be very complex or even impossible. In this paper the problems of development of vehicle systems according to ISO 26262 are described. Finally an approach for a safety-oriented reference architecture is presented that introduces adaptive software safety cages. This architecture enables application of formal verification methods. Supported by multisensor data fusion this allows to reduce safety requirements for vehicle control systems. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Where IP cores to be mapped must be carefully solved for any given application in order to optimize different performance metrics in Network-on-Chip (NoC) design flow. The optimization of different performance metrics simultaneously may cause a negative effect on each other because of the strong correlation between these performance metrics. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective ant colony algorithm (MOACA) that maps IP cores onto mesh-based NoC architectures. This algorithm is an efficient way to find the pareto-optimal front which optimizes energy consumption and hotspot temperature of NoC. The algorithm has been implemented and evaluated for synthetic generated benchmarks. Experimental results confirm the efficiency, accuracy and scalability of the algorithm. © 2011 IEEE.
