A mobile cluster experiences disruption in execution of long-running applications because of its highly dynamic nature. Process migration is a solution for handling such dynamism to have seamless computing with minimal disruption. The challenge in process migration is that it should take considerably less time. This work is a novel effort at such a goal that employs a heap-based super P2P structure for the cluster. The P2P cluster transfers process state in terms of object migration between the peers through the base station. Also, while migrating processes, care is taken to maintain load balancing. As the mobile cluster has heterogeneous nodes with varying processing capabilities, we devise a mechanism for computing the capabilities of these nodes. Considering the capability and current load of the nodes the destination for process migration is chosen. © 2010 IEEE.

Service oriented architecture (SOA) promotes highly standardized, loosely coupled and Web-enabled services to foster rapid, low-cost and easy composition of distribute applications. Critical to SOA software development is to acquire users' requirements and to provide service analysis and design techniques for identifying, conceptualizing, profiling, and rationalising service-enable applications. Semantic-enabled requirements engineering (SRE) for developing service-oriented applications helps to transform disordered users' needs into ordered requirement specifications. It facilitates requirements acquisition with multiple stakeholders' participation. It further enhances semantic-conducted services aggregation and eventually provides customized service productions according to process semantics of requirements. This paper concentrates on user-centric service customization with a paradigm shift from classical provider-centric service provision to user-centric active service production. Subscription and pushing technology of ATOM/RSS is adopted to actively push users' needs to service providers. Semantic description of service requirements is proposed, and characterizes in identifying process (workflow) and service. A customized service production platform is designed to demonstrate its practicability and effectiveness. © 2010 IEEE.

One fundamental issue in the sensor networks is the coverage problem, which we would like to determine whether a region of interest is sufficiently covered by a given set of sensors. It can be considered as a measure of the quality of service (QoS) in the sensor networks. There are several efforts that design efficient algorithms to compute coverage;however, they have not considered the presence of obstacles in the corresponding region. In this paper, we present a new algorithm to compute the area covered by a set of sensors distributed in a region containing transparent obstacles with arbitrary shapes. The sensor network can be homogeneous or heterogeneous.

There is a global consensus on the need to reduce our collective carbon footprint. While much research attention has focused on developing alternative energy sources, automotive technologies or waste disposal techniques, we often ignore the fact that the ability to optimize (existing) operations to reduce their emissions impact is fundamental to this exercise. We believe that by transforming the problem into the domain of Business Process Management (BPM) we can leverage the rich expertise in this field to address issues associated with identifying areas for improvement, understanding the implication and performing carbon footprint minimization. We will use the term "Green BPM" to describe a novel class of technologies that leverage and extend existing BPM technology to enable process design, analysis, execution and monitoring in a manner informed by the carbon footprint of process designs and instances. This article describes the first steps in the development of this class of technologies. © 2010 IEEE.

Manfred was born in 1944 in Landskron, Czechia. In 1963, he enrolled for mathematics and physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, from which he received a master degree in 1969. Subsequently, he worked at a research lab of Siemens AG in the area of graphics software. In 1971, he returned to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. At the chair of programming languages headed by Hans-Jürgen Schneider, he focused on graph grammars and graph rewriting systems. Manfred received a doctoral degree in 1974 and a habilitation degree in 1979, both from the engineering Faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 1979, Manfred obtained his first position as a professor at the University of Koblenz-Landau, where he worked as an associate professor of computer science until 1981. He then moved to the University of Osnabrück, where he held the chair of applied computer science as a full professor until 1986. From then on, Manfred held a chair of computer science at RWTH Aachen University until he retired in July 2009. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) presented the 2010 Fall Symposium Series on November 11-13, 2010. The eight symposia included Cognitive and Metacognitive Educational systems, Commonsense Knowledge, Complex Adaptive systems: Resilience, Robustness, and Evolvability, Computational Models of Narrative, Dialog with Robots, Manifold Learning and Its Applications, Proactive Assistant Agents and Quantum Informatics for Cognitive, Social, and Semantic Processes. Cognitive and Metacognitive Educational systems aimed to provide a comprehensive definition of metacognitive educational systems that is inclusive of the theoretical, architectural, and educational aspects of this field. The AAAI Commonsense Knowledge Fall Symposium had the goal of bringing together the diverse elements of this community whose work benefits from or contributes to the representation of general knowledge about the world. One of the specific goals of Proactive symposium was to gather the researchers from various projects in assistant agents to share their wisdom in retrospect.

Requirements engineering is essentially a social collaborative activity in which involved stakeholders have to closely work together to communicate, elicit, negotiate, define, confirm, and finally come up with the requirements for the system to be implemented or upgraded. In the development of large and complex systems, with a huge number of uncertain stakeholders, the requirements engineering process becomes a challenging task due to overwhelming and dynamic social interactions, tradeoffs, and collective decisions made by above stakeholders. Traditional approaches and techniques are deficient in supporting this kind of social interactions in requirements-related activities, and managing the evolving requirements and their traceability caused by the social interactions. This paper proposes to address the challenges in the pre-requirements analysis of large and complex systems by employing the techniques from collective intelligence based on Web 2.0 tools and technologies, which is composed of three steps: first, obtain collective requirements knowledge through collaborative tagging by stakeholders;second, transform collaborative requirement tags into requirement ontologies;third, support collective requirement decision-making (i.e., collective intelligence) based on the requirement ontologies through requirements reasoning. © 2010 ACM.

The prediction of gene function from genome sequences is one of the main issues in Bioinformatics. Most computational approaches are based on the similarity between sequences to infer gene function. However, the availability of several fully sequenced genomes has enabled alternative approaches, such as phylogenetic profiles. Phylogenetic profiles are vectors which indicate the presence or absence of a gene in other genomes. The main concept of phylogenetic profiles is that proteins participating in a common structural complex or metabolic pathway are likely to evolve in a correlated fashion. In this paper, a multi level clustering algorithm of phylogenetic profiles is presented, which aims to detect inter- and intragenome gene clusters. © 2010 IEEE.

CASO is an agent-oriented programming language based on AgentSpeak(L), one of the most influential abstract languages based on the beliefs-desires- intentions (BDI) architecture. For many applications, it is more convenient to let the user provide in real time, a more elaborate specification consisting of constraints and preferences over possible goal states. Then, let the system discover a plan for the most desirable among the feasible goal states. CASO incorporates constraints and objectives into the symbolic approach of reactive BDI model which lead to better expressive capabilities as well as more efficient computation. Jason is a fully-fledged interpreter for a much improved version of AgentSpeak(L). In this work, we modify Jason to incorporate the operational semantics of CASO. CASO also uses ECLiPSe, an open source constraint solver, to apply constraint solving techniques. Our preliminary results show that CASO can be used as a powerful multi-agent programming language in solving problems in complex application domains. Copyright © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
