In this panel, we propose to figure out how requirements engineering and interaction design can be usefully combined. In particular, some people argue that scenarios/ use cases should be concrete, as in story-telling. Others argue for use of "essential" use cases as a methodological approach to interaction and user-interface design. Somewhat in the middle, it is argued that use cases should help acquiring the requirements in the first place. What should the practitioner believe and, in particular, do, in order to develop useful and usable software and systems? software development and interaction design require different skills and different methods and are typically done by different people. Still, scenario-based design is proposed for several activities relevant for both tasks, such as requirements elicitation, software design, and interaction design. Symbolic modeling in this spirit is actually common to various fields. However, scenario-based approaches vary, especially with regard to their use, e.g., employing abstract use cases or integrating scenarios with functions and goals in a systematic design process. So, the key issue to be raised at the panel is how to combine different approaches, e.g., in scenario-based development, so that the interaction design as well as the development of the user interface and of the software internally result in an overall useful and useable system.

Gas recognition is a new emerging research area with many civil, military, and industrial applications. The success
of any gas recognition system depends on its computational
complexity and its robustness. In this work, we propose a
new low-complexity recognition method which is tested and
successfully validated for tin-oxide gas sensor array chip. The
recognition system is based on a vector angle similarity measure
between the query gas and the representatives of the different gas
classes. The latter are obtained using a clustering algorithm based
on the same measure within the training data set. Experimented results on our in-house gas sensors array show more than 98 % of correct recognition. The robustness of the proposed method
is tested by recognizing gas measurements with simulated drift.
Less than 1 % of performance degradation is noted at the worst case
scenario which represents a significant improvement when
compared to the current state-of-the-art.

Numerous network traffic classification approaches have recently been proposed. In general, these approaches have focused on correctly identifying a high percentage of total flows. However, on the Internet a small number of "elephant" flows contribute a significant amount of the traffic volume. In addition, some application types like Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and FTP contribute more elephant flows than other applications types like Chat. In this opinion piece, we discuss how evaluating a classifier on flow accuracy alone can bias the classification results. By not giving special attention to these traffic classes and their elephant flows in the evaluation of traffic classification approaches we might obtain significantly different performance when these approaches are deployed in operational networks for typical traffic classification tasks such as traffic shaping. We argue that byte accuracy must also be used when evaluating the accuracy of traffic classification algorithms. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Modeling is an important and time consuming part of the Business Process Management life-cycle. An analyst reviews existing documentation and queries relevant domain experts to construct both mental and concrete models of the domain. To aid this exercise, we propose the Rapid Business Process Discovery (R-BPD) framework and prototype tool that can query heterogeneous information resources (e.g. corporate documentation, web-content, code e.t.c.) and rapidly construct proto-models to be incrementally adjusted to correctness by an analyst. This constitutes a departure from building and constructing models toward just editing them. We believe this rapid mixed-initiative modeling will increase analyst productivity by significant orders of magnitude over traditional approaches. Furthermore, the possibility of using the approach in distributed and real-time settings seems appealing and may help in significantly improving the quality of the models being developed w.r.t. being consistent, complete, and concise.

This paper further investigates and answers two fundamental questions in the complex dynamical networks: i) how many nodes should a general complex dynamical network with fixed network structure and coupling strength be pinned to reach network synchronization? ii) how much coupling strength should a general complex dynamical network with fixed network structure and pinning nodes be employed to reach network synchronization? In the above framework, the coupling-configuration matrix and the inner-coupling matrix are not necessarily symmetric. Also, the pinning nodes can be randomly selected. Furthermore, our adaptive pinning controllers are rather simple compared with some traditional controllers. Finally, a BA network example is then given to show the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization criteria.

The study of synchronization of population dynamics is extremely important for predicting and evaluating the risk of global extinctions. The migration in a network of patch populations (metapopulation) inevitably involves various environmental noises or outside disturbances, which make the migration is timely evolving and spatially extended. Thus the time-invariant discrete biological networks are often insufficient to capture the key features of real-world biological networks. Here, a time-varying discrete biological network is proposed to characterize the practical metapopulation for the first time. Based on this model, several novel local synchronous criteria are then attained, which provide some new insights into the ecological conservation and biological diversity. Moreover, these synchronous criteria are also applicable to the synchronization of complex networks in other biological and engineeringsystems.
