We consider improving the performance of communications over unknown channels with unknown frequency offsets. In lieu of the commonly suggested double differential (DD) modulation/detection, we consider single differential (SD) modulation/detection. We propose an approach that first estimates and compensates for the frequency offset and then detects using an existing multiple symbol detector for SD modulation. We introduce a simple data-symbol-independent frequency offset estimation method, which is reasonably accurate when using a data block larger than the one used for detection. Simulation results show that the SD modulation/detection approach proposed herein can significantly outperform the DD modulation/detection schemes.

The paper focuses on a selected class of decision problems related with the production flow planning in SMEs, particularly in new production orders. Verification of orders gives a possibility to evaluate whether resources capacity of a manufacturer is balanced with the orderer's requirements. The class of decision problems under analysis is included in the scope of organizational production preparation and can be naturally determined by available CLP (constraint logic programming) tools. The approach proposed in the paper is based on establishment of an interface which facilitates its task oriented use. The system has been presented on the basis of a sample order execution in a manufacturer's company (Archimedes S.A.).

Conditions on input signals are derived that characterize their probing richness for system identification using binary-valued observations. This paper proposes a novel threshold control approach for creating multi-scroll chaotic attractors. The general jerk circuit is used as an example to show the working principle of this method. The controlled jerk circuit can emerge various limit cycles and n-scroll chaotic attractors by adjusting the upper threshold, lower threshold, and the width of inner saturated plateau. The dynamical mechanism of the threshold control is then further explored by analyzing the system dynamical behaviors. In particular, this method is effective and simple to implement since we only need monitor a single state variable and reset it if it exceeds the thresholds. It indicates the potential engineering applications for various chaos-based information systems

This modeling study investigates the functional role of pacemaker neurons in generating stable rhythms in the pre-Botzinger complex, a subcircuit of the respiratory pattern-generating circuitry in mammals. While the presence of pacemakers within the network is without doubt, the percentage and significance of such pacemakers is still unresolved. Here we revisited earlier network simulations by varying the fraction of pacemaker and non-pacemaker neurons within the network, and quantifying the robustness of the input parameter space and range of frequencies output by the network. Stable network rhythms were possible even with no pacemakers. However, we found that a network of at least 50% pacemakers produced the greatest range of output frequencies and had the more robust input space

X-ray luggage inspection systems play an important role in ensuring air travelers' security. However, the false alarm rate of commercial systems can be as high as 20% due to less than perfect image processing algorithms. In an effort to reduce the false alarm rate, this paper proposes a combinational scheme to fuse, de-noise and enhance dual-energy X-ray images for better object classification and threat detection. The fusion step is based on the wavelet transform. Fused images generally reveal more detail information;however, background noise often gets amplified during the fusion process. This paper applies a background-subtraction-based noise reduction technique which is very efficient in removing background noise from fused X-ray images. The de-noised image is then processed using a new enhancement technique to reconstruct the final image. The final image not only contains complementary information from both source images, but is also background-noise-free and contrast-enhanced, therefore easier to segment automatically or be interpreted by screeners, thus reducing the false alarm rate in X-ray luggage inspection. © 2005 IEEE computer Society. This paper presents a feature point tracking algorithm using optical flow under the non-prior training active feature model (NPT-AFM) framework. The proposed algorithm mainly focuses on analysis of deformable objects, and provides real-time, robust tracking. The proposed object tracking procedure can be divided into two steps: (i) optical flow-based tracking of feature points and (ii) NPT-AFM for robust tracking. In order to handle occlusion problems in object tracking, feature points inside an object are estimated instead of its shape boundary of the conventional active contour model (ACM) or active shape model (ASM), and are updated as an element of the training set for the AFM. The proposed NPT-AFM framework enables the tracking of occluded objects in complicated background. Experimental results show that the proposed NPT-AFM-based algorithm can track deformable objects in real-time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

We propose an adaptive output-feedback control design technique for feedforward systems with Input-to-State Stable (ISS) appended dynamics and disturbance inputs. The design is based on our recent results on the application of dynamic high-gain scaling to state-feedback and output-feedback control of feedforward systems. Unlike previous approaches to the control of feedforward systems, the dynamic high-gain scaling technique provides robustness to additive disturbances and enabled the first output-feedback controller design for feedforward systems. In this paper, we further investigate the robustness properties of the dynamic high-gain scaling approach by introducing exogenous disturbance inputs and ISS appended dynamics coupled with all the system states and the input. The designed adaptive output-feedback controller achieves BIBS stability with respect to disturbance inputs and also provides a disturbance attenuation result. This provides the first results for feedforward systems with ISS appended dynamics and disturbance inputs.

With the deregulation of power industry, many tie lines between control areas are driven to operate near their maximum capacity, especially those serving heavy load centers. Wide area controllers (WACs) using wide-area or global signals can provide remote auxiliary control signals to local controllers such as automatic voltage regulators, power system stabilizers, etc to damp out inter-area oscillations. The power system is highly nonlinear system with fast changing dynamics. In order to have an efficient WAC, an online system monitor/predictor is required to provide inter-area information to the WAC from time to time. This paper presents the design of an online Wide Area Monitor (WAM) using a neural network called the Wide Area Neuroidentifier (WANI). The WANI is used to predict ahead the speed deviations of generators in the different areas using phasor measurement unit (PMU). Results are presented to show the effectiveness of the wide area monitor for different disturbances. © 2005 IEEE.
