The simulation of two basic equivalent circuit models of the implantable neural interface is described in this paper. The simulated equivalent circuits are created based on the physicochemical mechanism of charge transfer on the surface of the implantable neural interface. Each parameter of the equivalent circuit model was varied to investigate the regular pattern of individual element affecting the performance of the implantable neural interface. In this paper, one circuit model is based on the charge transfer process, and another circuit model is based on the mixed charge transfer and diffusion process. The equivalent circuits are split into two parts. The neural interface of the implantable neural interface device is simulated in one part, and the rest of that is simulated in another part. The electrochemical impedance data is acquired firstly by simulating the equivalent circuit with Z-view software. Then, the simulated data was analyzed to investigate the change tendency of a single parameter, providing a theoretical method for developing customized implantable neural interface with specific electrochemical impedance. © 2022 IEEE.

DASECount: Domain-Agnostic Sample-Efficient Wireless Indoor Crowd Counting via Few-shot Learning

Accurate indoor crowd counting (ICC) is a key enabler to many smart home/office applications. Recent development of WiFi-based ICC technology relies on detecting the variation of wireless channel state information (CSI) caused by human motions and has gained increasing popularity due to its low hardware cost, reliability under all lighting conditions, and privacy preservation in sensing data processing. To attain high estimation accuracy, existing WiFi-based ICC methods often require a large amount of labeled CSI training data samples for each application domain, i.e., a particular WiFi transceiver or background deployment. This makes large-scale deployment of WiFi-based ICC technology across dissimilar domains extremely difficult and costly. In this paper, we propose a Domain-Agnostic and Sample-Efficient wireless indoor crowd Counting (DASECount) framework that suffices to attain robust cross-domain detection accuracy given very limited data samples in new domains. DASECount leverages the wisdom of few-shot learning (FSL) paradigm consisting of two major stages: source domain meta training and target domain meta testing. Specifically, in the meta-training stage, we design and train two separate convolutional neural network (CNN) modules on the source domain dataset to fully capture the implicit amplitude and phase features of CSI measurements related to human activities. A subsequent knowledge distillation procedure is designed to iteratively update the CNN parameters for better generalization performance. In the meta-testing stage, we use the partial CNN modules to extract low-dimension features out of the high-dimension input target domain CSI data. With the obtained low-dimension CSI features, we can even use very few shots of target domain data samples (e.g., 5-shot samples) to train a lightweight logistic regression (LR) classifier, and attain very high cross-domain ICC accuracy. Flexible tissue modeling plays an important role in the field of telemedicine. It is related to whether the soft tissue deformation process can be accurately, real-time and vividly simulated during surgery. However, most existing models lack the unique biological characteristics. To solve this problem, a high-fidelity virtual liver model incorporating biological characteristics, such as the viscoelastic, anisotropic and nonlinear biological characteristics, is proposed based on the finite element model. When simulating the resection of diseased livers, the model undergoes a plastic deformation process where the model loses elasticity due to excessive deformation, but does not reach the cutting fracture threshold. To improve the fidelity of the liver model, this study is the first to introduce the viscoplasticity of biological tissues to the liver model. The 3DMax2020 and OpenGL4.6 were used to build a liver surgery simulation platform, and the PHANTOM OMNI manual controller was used to sense the feedback force during the operation. The proposed model was verified from three aspects of accuracy, fidelity and real-time performance. The experimental results show that the proposed virtual liver model can enhance visual perception ability, improve deformation accuracy and fidelity. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Devils in the Clouds: An Evolutionary Study of Telnet Bot Loaders

One of the innovations brought by Mirai and its derived malware is the adoption of self-contained loaders for infecting IoT devices and recruiting them in botnets. Functionally decoupled from other botnet components and not embedded in the payload, loaders cannot be analysed using conventional approaches that rely on honeypots for capturing samples. Different approaches are necessary for studying the loaders evolution and defining a genealogy. To address the insufficient knowledge about loaders’ lineage in existing studies, in this paper, we propose a semantic-aware method to measure, categorize, and compare different loader servers, with the goal of highlighting their evolution, independent from the payload evolution. Leveraging behavior-based metrics, we cluster the discovered loaders and define eight families to determine the genealogy and draw a homology map. Our study shows that the source code of Mirai is evolving and spawning new botnets with new capabilities, both on the client side and the server side. In turn, shedding light on the infection loaders can help the cybersecurity community to improve detection and prevention tools. © 2022, CC BY.

The need for automatic and high-quality emotion annotation is paramount in applications such as continuous emotion recognition and video highlight detection, yet achieving this through manual human annotations is challenging. Inspired by inter-subject correlation (ISC) utilized in neuroscience, this study introduces a novel Electroencephalography (EEG) based ISC methodology that leverages a single-electrode and feature-based dynamic approach. Our contributions are three folds: Firstly, we reidentify two potent emotion features suitable for classifying emotions-first-order difference (FD) an differential entropy (DE). Secondly, through the use of overall correlation analysis, we demonstrate the heterogeneous synchronized performance of electrodes. This performance aligns with neural emotion patterns established in prior studies, thus validating the effectiveness of our approach. Thirdly, by employing a sliding window correlation technique, we showcase the significant consistency of dynamic ISCs across various features or key electrodes in each analyzed film clip. Our findings indicate the method’s reliability in capturing consistent, dynamic shared neural synchrony among individuals, triggered by evocative film stimuli. This underscores the potential of our approach to serve as an indicator of continuous human emotion arousal. The implications of this research are significant for advancements in affective computing and the broader neuroscience field, suggesting a streamlined and effective tool for emotion analysis in real-world applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Far-field chemical microscopy providing molecular electronic or vibrational fingerprint information opens a new window for the study of three-dimensional biological, material, and chemical systems. Chemical microscopy provides a nondestructive way of chemical identification without exterior labels. However, the diffraction limit of optics hindered it from discovering more details under the resolution limit. Recent development of super-resolution techniques gives enlightenment to open this door behind far-field chemical microscopy. Here, we review recent advances that have pushed the boundary of far-field chemical microscopy in terms of spatial resolution. We further highlight applications in biomedical research, material characterization, environmental study, cultural heritage conservation, and integrated chip inspection. © 2023, CC BY.

In this report, we summarize the first NTIRE challenge on light field (LF) image super-resolution (SR), which aims at super-resolving LF images under the standard bicubic degradation with a magnification factor of 4. This challenge develops a new LF dataset called NTIRE-2023 for validation and test, and provides a toolbox called BasicLFSR to facilitate model development. Compared with single image SR, the major challenge of LF image SR lies in how to exploit complementary angular information from plenty of views with varying disparities. In total, 148 participants have registered the challenge, and 11 teams have successfully submitted results with PSNR scores higher than the baseline method LF-InterNet [1]. These newly developed methods have set new state-of-the-art in LF image SR, e.g., the winning method achieves around 1 dB PSNR improvement over the existing state-of-the-art method DistgSSR [2]. We report the solutions proposed by the participants, and summarize their common trends and useful tricks. We hope this challenge can stimulate future research and inspire new ideas in LF image SR. © 2023 IEEE.

A low-loss and wideband silicon polarizing beam splitter is demonstrated with the assistance of a nano-bridge waveguide. Transverse magnetic light can be coupled to the cross port through the nano-bridge waveguide, while the transverse electric light comes out mainly from the through port. The designed device has a coupling length of 19 µm, while an extinction ratio of 24.02 dB can be achieved at a 1565-nm wavelength of L -band. Compared with the conventional directional coupler structure, the proposed device realizes twice coupling for the transverse magnetic light, which can help to effectively improve the fabrication tolerance compatible with commercial CMOS processing. The fabricated device can achieve an extinction ratio of more than 16.64 dB with a low insertion loss, while the extinction ratio of more than 10 dB can be realized in the wavelength range from 1525 to 1610 nm. The device performance can be further improved, which would facilitate its practical applications in commercial integrated optical circuits. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) has been a popular research topic in recent years. Existing works concentrate on mapping the visual information of sketches and images to a semantic space at the object level. In this paper, for the first time, we study the fine-grained scene-level SBIR problem which aims at retrieving scene images satisfying the user’s specific requirements via a freehand scene sketch. We propose a graph embedding based method to learn the similarity measurement between images and scene sketches, which models the multi-modal information, including the size and appearance of objects as well as their layout information, in an effective manner. To evaluate our approach, we collect a dataset based on SketchyCOCO and extend the dataset using Coco-stuff. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the significant potential of the proposed approach on the application of fine-grained scene-level image retrieval. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Commit messages are natural language descriptions of code changes, which are important for software evolution such as code understanding and maintenance. However, previous methods are trained on the entire dataset without considering the fact that a portion of commit messages adhere to good practice (i.e., good-practice commits), while the rest do not. On the basis of our empirical study, we discover that training on good-practice commits significantly contributes to the commit message generation. Motivated by this finding, we propose a novel knowledge-aware denoising learning method called KADEL. Considering that good-practice commits constitute only a small proportion of the dataset, we align the remaining training samples with these good-practice commits. To achieve this, we propose a model that learns the commit knowledge by training on good-practice commits. This knowledge model enables supplementing more information for training samples that do not conform to good practice. However, since the supplementary information may contain noise or prediction errors, we propose a dynamic denoising training method. This method composes a distribution-aware confidence function and a dynamic distribution list, which enhances the effectiveness of the training process. Experimental results on the whole MCMD dataset demonstrate that our method overall achieves state-of-the-art performance compared with previous methods. © 2024, CC BY.
