Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The accuracy of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) navigation system determines whether they can safely operate and return. Traditional Dead-reckoning (DR) relies on the inertial sensors such as gyroscope and accelerometer. A major challenge for DR navigation is from measurement error of the inertial sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer, etc.), especially when the AUV is near or at the ocean surface. The AUV's motion is affected by ocean waves, and its pitch angle changes rapidly with the waves. This rapid change and the measurement errors will cause great noise to the direction measured by gyroscopes, and then lead to a large error to the DR navigation. To address this problem, a novel DR method based on neural network (DR-N) is proposed to explore the time-varying relationship between acceleration measurement and orientation measurement, which leverages acoustic localization and neural network estimate timely pitch angle through the explored time-varying relationship. This method enables AUV's DR navigation with a single acceleration, without relying on both acceleration and gyroscope. Most importantly, we can improve the accuracy of AUV navigation through avoiding DR errors caused by gyroscope noise at the sea surface. Simulations show DR-N significantly improves navigation accuracy.

In this paper, we designed an experiment to observe changes for different fatigue level in human brain when watching random dot stereogram (RDS) using the method of EEG. The subjects were asked to watch 3D content for 30 minutes and the disparity of RDS changed every 10 seconds. During this watching task, subjects should rate their extent of fatigue during the experiment on the scale of one to five only when they felt worse or better. 30 channels electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded through the experiment. Finally, the relationship between various fatigue levels and disparities which revealed by EEG signals were investigated. Our results show that the power of waveband, namely alpha increased with the fatigue level increasing from one to four during watching RDS, but decreased in level five. We have employed logistic regression to model fatigue level and achieved classification accuracy of 94.18%. Our research has important implications for the continuous monitoring of user's fatigue in the future.

As one of the most important deep learning models, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved great successes in a number of applications such as image classification, speech recognition and nature language understanding. Training CNNs on large data sets is computationally expensive, leading to a flurry of research and development of open-source parallel implementations on GPUs. However, few studies have been performed to evaluate the performance characteristics of those implementations. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive comparison of these implementations over a wide range of parameter configurations, investigate potential performance bottlenecks and point out a number of opportunities for further optimization.

A Decode-and-Forward Scheme for LDPC Coded Three-Way Relay Fading Channels

In this paper a low-density pairwise check(LDPC) coded three-way relay system is considered, where three user nodes desire to exchange messages with the help of one relay node. Since physical-layer network coding is applied, two time slots are sufficient for one round information exchange. In this paper, we present a decode-and-forward(DF) scheme based on joint LDPC decoding for three-way relay channels, where relay decoder partially decodes the network code rather than fully decodes all the user messages. Simulation results show that the new DF scheme considerably outperforms other common schemes in three-way relay fading channels.

As a traditional application on various supercomputers, atmospheric modeling has long been suffering from the low performance efficiency. In this paper, we pick the 3D Euler equation solver (the most essential dynamic component for a non-hydrostatic atmospheric model) as the target application, and explore the maximum performance efficiency that can be achieved on CPU-GPU hybrid architectures. Besides presenting the suitable hybrid domain decomposition methodology and taking proper usage of tuning techniques for both the CPU and GPU parts, we further propose a novel GPU tuning technique, namely the customizable data caching mechanism with thread warp rescheduling scheme, which is specifically designed for the Euler solver. Combining all the optimizing approaches together, remarkable performance boost has been achieved on mainstream GPU architectures including Tesla Fermi C2050, K20×, K40 and K80. Especially, on the latest Tesla K80, we demonstrate a 31.64× speedup over the performance of 12-core E5-2697 CPU. In addition, based on a hybrid CPU-GPU node with two 12-core E5-2697 CPUs and two Tesla K80 GPUs, a sustained double-precision performance of 1.04 Tflops (16% of the peak) is achieved, which is remarkably higher than the efficiency of similar optimizing tasks based on heterogeneous platforms (strictly less than 10%, as demonstrated in the related work). In addition, a nearly linear weak scaling efficiency is achieved which demonstrate the effectiveness of our domain decomposition method.

Most processors employ hardware data prefetching techniques to hide memory access latencies. However, the prefetching requests from different threads on a multicore processor can cause severe interference with prefetching and/or demand requests of others. The data prefetching can lead to significant performance degradation due to shared resource contention on shared memory multicore systems. This article proposes a thread-aware data prefetching mechanism based on low-overhead runtime information to tune prefetching modes and aggressiveness, mitigating the resource contention in the memory system. Our solution has three new components: (1) a self-tuning prefetcher that uses runtime feedback to dynamically adjust data prefetching modes and arguments of each thread, (2) a filtering mechanism that informs the hardware about which prefetching request can cause shared data invalidation and should be discarded, and (3) a limiter thread acceleration mechanism to estimate and accelerate the critical thread which has the longest completion time in the parallel region of execution. On a set of multithreaded parallel benchmarks, our thread-aware data prefetchingmechanism improves the overall performance of 64-core system by 13% over a multimode prefetch baseline system with two-level cache organization and conventional modified, exclusive, shared, and invalid-based directory coherence *** compare our approach with the feedback directed prefetching technique and find that it provides 9% performance improvement on multicore systems, while saving the memory bandwidth consumption.

Security-sensitive behaviors in Android applications (apps for short) may or may not be malicious. We propose that a fundamental difference between malicious and benign behaviors is that their corresponding user intentions are different, i.e., whether there is an association between the app behavior and user intention. The user knows and wants this behavior to happen. Based on this discovery, we first design and realize IBdroid, which can precisely monitor user inter-faces, user actions and security-sensitive behaviors of apps. Then the user intention features, which can perceive the correlations between user intention and app behavior from time, process, semantic and data perspectives, are extracted from the records obtained by IBdroid. Finally, an approach using user intention features is proposed to differentiate benign and malicious behaviors. In our evaluations, we correctly identify 333 out of 354 security-sensitive behaviors, achieving 96.43% precision and 91.53% recall, the experimental result demonstrates that our approach can effectively and accurately detect and block malicious behaviors of Android apps.

This paper presents a simulator for swarm operations designed to verify algorithms for a swarm of autonomous underwater robots (AUVs), specifically for constructing an underwater communication network with AUVs carrying acoustic communication devices. This simulator consists of three nodes: a virtual vehicle node (VV), a virtual environment node (VE), and a visual showing node (VS). The modular design treats AUV models as a combination of virtual equipment. An expert acoustic communication simulator is embedded in this simulator, to simulate scenarios with dynamic acoustic communication nodes. The several simulations we have performed demonstrate that this simulator is easy to use and can be further improved.
