This paper presents a mixed methods study on how deaf, hard of hearing and hearing viewers perceive live TV caption quality with captioned video stimuli designed to mirror TV captioning experiences. To assess caption quality, we used four commonly-used quality metrics focusing on accuracy: word error rate, weighted word error rate, automated caption evaluation (ACE), and its successor ACE2. We calculated the correlation between the four quality metrics and viewer ratings for subjective quality and found that the correlation was weak, revealing that other factors besides accuracy affect user ratings. Additionally, even high-quality captions are perceived to have problems, despite controlling for confounding factors. Qualitative analysis of viewer comments revealed three major factors affecting their experience: Errors within captions, difficulty in following captions, and caption appearance. The findings raise questions as to how objective caption quality metrics can be reconciled with the user experience across a diverse spectrum of viewers.

Objective: To describe the design, development, and deployment of an electronic health record (EHR)-based application to manage the Mayo Clinic home dialysis program, improve staff efficiency, and ensure delivery of high-quality clinical care. Patients and Methods: At Mayo Clinic, the Cohort Knowledge Intelligence Solutions (CKIS) team develops innovative patient cohort management solutions using the Epic Healthy Planet module. The CKIS team uses a collaborative and agile approach that incorporates feedback from clinical stakeholders and informatics to create these solutions that improve and automate processes for clinical staff, all managed within the EHR. Over several months (September 1, 2019, to December 30, 2020), the clinical nephrology and CKIS teams met regularly to develop in an iterative fashion 2 home dialysis applications. Time spent on various EHR-related home dialysis tasks was compared before and after the implementation of the applications based on the Nursing Efficiency Assessment Tool (NEAT). Results: Two EHR applications were developed for managing home dialysis referrals and enrollments or monitoring, respectively. The applications consolidate all needed information and provide real-time data to manage patients at the individual or population level. Time saved for the 2 dialysis nurses who worked before and after the implementation was 25 and 20.4 minutes per 8-hour shift, respectively. Conclusion: We developed and implemented 2 EHR applications that proved useful and increased efficiency in managing a home dialysis program. These digital tools can facilitate quality metrics reporting, scale the home dialysis program, and improve care delivery. © 2023 The Authors

Trained and optimized for typical and fluent speech, speech AI works poorly for people with speech diversities, often interrupting them and misinterpreting their speech. The increasing deployment of speech AI in automated phone menus, AI-conducted job interviews, and everyday devices poses tangible risks to people with speech diversities. To mitigate these risks, this workshop aims to build a multidisciplinary coalition and set the research agenda for fair and accessible speech AI. Bringing together a broad group of academics and practitioners with diverse perspectives, including HCI, AI, and other relevant fields such as disability studies, speech language pathology, and law, this workshop will establish a shared understanding of the technical challenges for fair and accessible speech AI, as well as its ramifications in design, user experience, policy, and society. In addition, the workshop will invite and highlight first-person accounts from people with speech diversities, facilitating direct dialogues and collaboration between speech AI developers and the impacted communities. The key outcomes of this workshop include a summary paper that synthesizes our learnings and outlines the roadmap for improving speech AI for people with speech diversities, as well as a community of scholars, practitioners, activists, and policy makers interested in driving progress in this domain. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Students who are deaf and hard of hearing cannot hear in class and do not have full access to spoken information. They can use accommodations such as captions that display speech as text. However, compared with their hearing peers, the caption accommodations do not provide equal access, because they are focused on reading captions on their tablet and cannot see who is talking. This viewing isolation contributes to student frustration and risk of doing poorly or withdrawing from introductory engineering courses with lab components. It also contributes to their lack of inclusion and sense of belonging. We report on the evaluation of a Real-Time Text Display with Speaker-Identification, which displays the location of a speaker in a group (RTTD-ID). RTTD-ID aims to reduce frustration in identifying and following an active speaker when there are multiple speakers, e.g., in a lab. It has three different display schemes to identify the location of the active speaker, which helps deaf students in viewing both the speaker's words and the speaker's expression and actions. We evaluated three RTTD speaker identification methods: 1) traditional: captions stay in one place and viewers search for the speaker, 2) pointer: captions stay in one place, and a pointer to the speaker is displayed, and 3) pop-up: captions "pop-up" next to the speaker. We gathered both quantitative and qualitative information through evaluations with deaf and hard of hearing users. The users preferred the pointer identification method over the traditional and pop-up methods. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2018.

Predictors of glycemic control in type-2 diabetes mellitus: Evidence from a multicenter study in Ghana

Background The burden of uncontrolled type-2 diabetes (T2DM) sub-Saharan Africa is high, with an increased risk of developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. We sought to identify predictors of poor diabetes control among Ghanaians with T2DM. Methods A cross-sectional study involving 1226 participants with T2DM enrolled at five health facilities in Ghana (2 tertiary, 2 district and 1 rural hospital). Data on demographics, medical history, lifestyle factors, anti-diabetic medications, and treatment adherence were collected. Additional questionnaires on sources of diabetes treatment medications and challenges with accessing these medications were also administered. Glycated hemoglobin was measured and a cut-off value of ≥7.0% used to define poor control. Predictors of diabetes control were assessed using a multivariate logistic regression model. Key results The mean ± SD age of study participants was 57 ± 12.1 years, with a female preponderance (77.5%). The mean HbA1C among all study participants was 8.9 ± 4.9% of which 70% had HBA1C >7%. Duration of diabetes diagnosis (aOR = 1.04; 95% CI 1.02–1.06), the absence of the Ghana National Health Insurance Scheme (aOR = 1.41; 95% CI 1.09–1.82) and the number of diabetes medicines (aOR = 1.73; 95% CI 1.45–2.07) were adversely associated with poor glycemic control while male gender (aOR = 0.66; 95% CI 0.49–0.88), increasing age (aOR of 0.97; 95% CI of 0.96–0.98) and dual diagnosis of diabetes and hypertension (aOR = 0.69; 95% CI 0.50–0.95) had positive associations with good glycemic control. Conclusion 7 out of 10 patients with T2DM in Ghana are poorly controlled. Multidisciplinary interventions that improve patient education, quality of care, access to antidiabetics including insulin, are all needed to avert deaths related to diabetes complications associated with uncontrolled T2DM in Ghana.

Mangrove forests are vulnerable coastal ecosystems that provide multiple ecosystem services and act as blue carbon sinks. Mangroves in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries of the Arabian peninsula (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE) have faced pressure from numerous anthropogenic factors including population growth, dredging and reclamation in lagoonal habitats, pollution and rapid urban development. Given the inconsistent outcomes of past mangrove ARR (Afforestation-Reforestation-Revegetation) efforts, our research aimed to identify high-potential ARR sites in the GCC using remote sensing. We identified eight factors related to mangrove ARR outcomes through correlation analyses: elevation, soil pH, median precipitation, median and minimum land surface temperature (LST), soil salinity, soil texture and distance from urban areas. To predict mangrove suitability, we compared the Random Forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Naive Bayes (NB) classification algorithms. The RF model performed best with an F1-score of 0.96, ROC-AUC of 0.99 and PR-AUC of 0.75. Variable importance analysis revealed that median LST, soil texture and median precipitation were the most influential variables. Favorable conditions for mangrove establishment included median temperatures of 32-37 °C, minimum temperatures around 27 °C, clayey soils, and monthly rainfall above 10 mm. Other suitable characteristics included lower elevation, greater distance from urban areas, slightly acidic to neutral pH, and moderate-to-high soil salinity. Our findings show that there is a large opportunity for mangrove afforestation in the GCC and also proposes a framework to identify optimal sites for mangrove growth, which can improve ARR success and support biodiversity and blue carbon goals in the Arabian peninsula.
