The author has been challenging to model natural intelligence as a formal system based on his original semantic theory "Mental Image Directed Semantic Theory (MIDST)". As the first step for this purpose, this paper presents a brief sketch of the attempt on systematic representation and computation of subjective spatiotemporal knowledge in natural language based on certain hypotheses of mental image in human.

In traditional reliability theory, both the system and its components are allowed to take only two possible states: working or failed. On the other hand, in a multi-state system, both the system and the components are allowed to be in M + 1 states, i.e., 0 , 1 , 2 ,....M. A multi-state system reliability model provides more flexibility for the modeling of equipment conditions. In this study, we provide new recursive algorithm for evaluating the system state distribution of a generalized multi-state k-out-of-n:F system as applied to ideas of previous studies. This recursive algorithm is useful for any multi-state k-out-of-n:F system, including the decreasing, increasing and other non-monotonic multi-state k-out-of-n:F systems. We calculate and compare the order of computing time and memory capacity of our proposing algorithm with previous studies. © 2009 Taylor amp;Francis Group.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the run-up of internal solitary waves (ISWs) on steep uniform slopes in a two-layered fluid system with a free surface. A 12 m long wave flume, which incorporated a movable vertical gate for generating ISWs, was used in the experiments. A steep uniform slope was modeled at one end of the flume. In the present study we looked at internal waves with small and large amplitudes using a steep uniform slope (from one of Θ=30, 50, 60, 90, 120, and 130 deg) much longer than those previously published in the literature. Results collected from a wide range of experimental runs show that the run-up height depends on the planar slope, while the breaking depth is only antecedent to the amplitude of an ISW. The overall quantitative agreement with the linear feature aspects of the incident wave amplitude is encouraging. Copyright © 2009 by ASME.

This paper aims to compare neuro-fuzzy based techniques for effective prediction of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) recurrence. The techniques include an artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS), the functional-type single input rule modules connected fuzzy inference method (F-SIRMs method) and the functional and neural network type SIRMs method (F-NN-SIRMs method). All models are produced to predict the presence or absence and timing of the NPC recurrence. Five years predictions are carried out. Validity of each predictive model is assured by 10-fold cross validation. The results show that the F-NN-SIRMs method is superior to the other techniques in a sense that it provides the higher prediction performance.

With respect to current methods for query evaluation over XML data streams, adoption of certain types of buffering techniques is unavoidable. Under lots of circumstances, the buffer scale may increase exponentially, which can cause memory bottleneck. Some optimization techniques have been proposed to solve the problem. However, the limit of these techniques has been defined by a concurrency lower bound and been theoretically proved. In this paper, we show through an empirical study that this lower bound can be broken by taking semantic information into account for buffer reduction. To demonstrate this, we build a SAX-based XML stream query evaluation system and design an algorithm that consumes buffers in line with the concurrency lower bound. After a further analysis of the lower bound, we design several semantic rules for the purpose of breaking the lower bound and incorporate these rules in the lower bound algorithm. Experiments are conducted to show that the algorithms deploying semantic rules individually and collectively all significantly outperform the lower bound algorithm that does not consider semantic information. © 2008, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

Teaching engineering and technology subjects involves conveying understanding of abstract information structures and processes such as complex telecommunications protocols, complex mathematical concepts, and data structures. These are multidimensional and can be difficult to grasp quickly. Supported by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) technology for Teaching grant, the School of engineering and technology at National University has embarked on a project to enable students to grasp these complex concepts more quickly and easily, using continuous dialog among students and instructors as the structures are first introduced and then examined from multiple perspectives through real-time interaction among students, small groups, and instructors. HP Wireless Tablet PCs are used to discuss and experiment with diagrams and processes in realtime. This allows combining lectures and problem-solving sessions into a single class session. Our hypothesis is that: 1) an in-depth learning of theory is accomplished, and 2) student engagement is enhanced. Presentation of theory by the instructor is integrated with application while the theory is still in the student's short-term memory. Students no longer have to wait for a separate session such as a recitation session to apply the concepts. This approach often takes less time. In addition to accelerating the learning process, expert instructors find this approach more rewarding as students grasp new concepts more quickly. Analysis of data captured from both students and instructors are presented to support our hypotheses, and our results are compared with similar research carried out by other universities. In addition, the level of interaction enabled by the use of HP Tablets in on-line classes is discussed. The best teaching tools available in existing on-line teaching platforms are compared with the additional tools available in on-site courses when every student has a wireless Tablet PC and specific recommendations are made to on-line teachi

A support system for disaster relief operations is developed. This system aims to help a disaster relief team composed of those at a disaster response headquarter and those at a disaster area to conduct relief operations at remote sites. Since cellular phones and Internet communications are ineffective at the time of emergencies, our system establishes private network communications by using long distance wireless antennas. Furthermore a wireless antenna can be installed on the roof of a patrol car so that the headquarters enables communications to be made within a range of 10 km in the radius. The effectiveness of the developed system to support disaster activities was verified by the results of operational exercises at an actual disaster control center in Tokyo.

This paper aims to investigate missing data techniques for effective prediction of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) recurrence. The techniques include listwise deletion, imputations by mean, k-nearest neighbor, and expectation maximization. The completed data are used to predict the presence or absence of NPC recurrence in each year by means of logistic regression, multilayer perceptron with backpropagation training, and naive bayes. Five year predictions are carried out. Validity of each predictive model is assured by 10-fold cross validation. Their results are compared in order to determine proper missing data treatment and the most efficient prediction technique. The results showed that EM imputation was superior to the other missing data techniques because it can be efficiently applied to all predictive models. The multilayer perceptron with backpropagation training gave the highest prediction performance and it was the most robust to the data completed by different missing data techniques.

This paper is presented to explain application of Genetic Algorithms (GA) to cluster new students into several classes. It is very essential since good educational service for a large number of student needs clustering of them. There is no clustering method can handle it due to the capacity of each class. The supervised clustering method can only cluster students where number of class is predefined, but it cannot handle the class capacities. The proposed approach is GA which succeeded in solving difficult optimization problems. Since clustering method can be solved by minimizing the distance between each object in the cluster with the corresponding cluster center, we proposed GA with cluster centre based chromosomal representation. We developed it as software and evaluated it with random data. The result showed that the class generated by GA consists of more similar students than the class generated by traditional sorting method.

This paper will start by mentioning very briefly previous results reported recently for mechanical sensors based on embedding a rectangular-lattice photonic crystal into the core of a standard monomode optical fiber. The next step will be to introduce and evaluate another mechanical sensor based on embedding a triangular-lattice photonic crystal into the core of the optical fiber. We will argue that such sensors (i.e., which embed photonic crystals into the core of optical fibers), are highly sensitive to mechanical deformations. Finally, we will estimate the sensitivity of the mechanical sensor which relies on a triangular-lattice photonic crystal, and compare it with that of a mechanical sensor which uses a rectangular-lattice photonic crystal. The main conclusion is that the triangular-based sensor is 22% more sensitive (than the rectangular-based one), while future directions of research will end the paper.
