Detecting anomalies in multivariate time-series data is an important task in various real-world industries, but doing so is non-trivial because both the temporal dependency within the time series and correlations between multiple time series must be considered. Previous studies have only addressed one issue, resulting in limited performance. To address this, we propose a graph convolution-based recurrent encoder-decoder, called GC-RED. The model incorporates intra-dependencies and inter-correlations using a graph-construction process and an encoding-decoding process that encodes the graph with an attention-enhanced graph convolutional LSTM and then restores it. Anomaly detection and root cause identification are performed based on the reconstruction error. Considering that anomalies with various durations can occur in actual situations, the model includes a vanilla model reflecting single scales and a model reflecting multiple scales. The feasibility and usefulness of GC-RED are demonstrated by intensive experiments on several benchmark and real-world datasets with comparisons to other competitive methods. © 2023, The Authors. The integration of design and technology innovations in the new product development (NPD) process is critical for successful product development and market success. technology innovation serves as the backbone of the development side of NPD, empowering products with the necessary functionalities and capabilities. Design innovation, on the other hand, is instrumental in aligning the products with customer needs and preferences, serving as a key driver on the market side of NPD. The present study aims to examine the effects of firms' capability in effectively integrating design and technology throughout the NPD process, which we refer to as design-engineering capability, on financial performance, as well as its moderating effect on the relationship between firms' innovation activity and financial performance. Our main hypothesis is that firms' design-engineering capability positively moderates the effects of innovation activities on financial performance. Using patent data for 1,659 US-headquartered publicly-traded firms from 1980 to 2015, the results of panel generalized least square (GLS) regressions confirm our hypotheses on the direct effect of design-engineering capability on firm performance and its moderating effect on the relationship between innovation activity and firm performance, highlighting the importance of having a strong integration of design and technology expertise within the organization.

Cyber threat attribution is the process of identifying the actor of an attack incident in cyberspace. An accurate and timely threat attribution plays an important role in deterring future attacks by applying appropriate and timely defense mechanisms. Manual analysis of attack patterns gathered by honeypot deployments, intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and via trace-back procedures is still the preferred method of security analysts for cyber threat attribution. Such attack patterns are low-level Indicators of Compromise (IOC). They represent Tactics, Techniques, Procedures (TTP), and software tools used by the adversaries in their campaigns. The adversaries rarely re-use them. They can also be manipulated, resulting in false and unfair attribution. To empirically evaluate and compare the effectiveness of both kinds of IOC, there are two problems that need to be addressed. The first problem is that in recent research works, the ineffectiveness of low-level IOC for cyber threat attribution has been discussed intuitively. An empirical evaluation for the measure of the effectiveness of low-level IOC based on a real-world dataset is missing. The second problem is that the available dataset for high-level IOC has a single instance for each predictive class label that cannot be used directly for training machine learning models. To address these problems in this research work, we empirically evaluate the effectiveness of low-level IOC based on a real-world dataset that is specifically built for comparative analysis with high-level IOC. The experimental results show that the high-level IOC trained models effectively attribute cyberattacks with an accuracy of 95% as compared to the low-level IOC trained models where accuracy is 40%. © 2023, CC BY.

We establish an algorithm that explains the evolutionary patterns of artifacts and construct a mobile phone phylomemetic tree using a very simple statistical method with the principles of biological evolution. Based on the results, we find that the change of an artifact and society's relationship to that artifact follow a certain pattern. First, the evolution of an artifact's characteristics takes a direction that differs depending upon the characteristics involved. In addition, the outcome of this evolution is connected to the general human perception of consumers. Second, each of an artifact's characteristics evolves sequentially rather than simultaneously. Furthermore, characteristics of one artifact that are held in common with those of other artifacts, such as a digital camera and PDA, have an effect on the speed of that artifact's evolution. Finally, producers that launch many evolved artifacts end up in a leading position in the marketplace.

Service providers that own Web2.0 services allow Internet users not only to access their Web2.0 services but also to create new Web2.0 services (mashups) based on theirs. This creation of mashups generates the Web2.0 service network, in which a node represents a Web2.0 service and a link between two nodes represents a mashup using the two Web2.0 services linked. Since this Web2.0 service network is constructed without the control of a single entity (i.e., it is self-organizing), the network topology of the Web2.0 service network shows the scale-free characteristic. With respect of the weighting of those links, however, there are different approaches. Prior research either considered binary links or links that are weighted by summing up the number of mashups. Since the last approach might overestimate the strength of the link, we calculate the link weights according to Newman's approach in this paper. Based on this weighted graph of the Web2.0 service network, we investigate the topology of the weighted graph and examine the pattern of Web2.0 service creations. Our results show that the Newman-based weighted graph of the Web2.0 service network shows the characteristics of a scale-free network and a small-world network. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The Non-Linear Impact of Temperature Extremes On Conflict: Evidence from Mainland Southeast Asia

We exploit 0.5°×0.5° raster data for mainland Southeast Asia from 2010 to 2020 to document a non-linear relationship between extreme temperature days and conflict. We show that the occurrence of conflict events increases with extreme maximum temperature days, whereas days with extreme minimum temperature decrease the occurrence of conflict. Because climate change makes both maximum and minimum temperature extremes more likely, these effects partially offset each other on aggregate. However, our results further suggest that the impact of extreme maximum and minimum temperature days differs for the type of conflict, actors involved and population affected, indicating complex distributional consequences. Our results also imply that accounting for extreme minimums is necessary to identify the impacts of extreme maximums whenever these events are correlated. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

As a result of increased specialization due to the expansion of human knowledge, collaborative learning to acquire new knowledge is becoming important. In order to find partners for effective learning, organizations need to consider the optimal level of cognitive proximity considering the complexity of the field of collaboration. This study examines the two-sided effects of cognitive proximity in the context of collaborative innovation, focusing on the moderating effect of knowledge complexity. Utilizing USPTO patent data of US biotechnology sector, this research confirmed an inverse U-shaped effect of cognitive proximity on collaborative innovation. The optimal level of cognitive proximity increases with higher level of knowledge complexity, which shows positive moderating effect of complexity on the proximity effect. The marginal effect of cognitive proximity also increases in complex fields, indicating that proximity plays stronger role as knowledge complexity increases. This indicates that while cognitive proximity enhances knowledge absorption, the presence of knowledge complexity hinders knowledge diffusion. Organizations that share more complex knowledge can achieve optimal collaborative performance by partnering with cognitively close counterparts. However, collaboration performance is lower than lower complex fields, even if organization achieve optimal cognitive distance. These insights offer valuable implications for collaboration strategies for organizations and provide guidance for policymakers and stakeholders in fostering innovation networks and creating supportive ecosystems.

Technological innovation is a dynamic process that spans the life cycle of an idea, fromscientific research to production. Within this process, there are often a few key innovations that significantly impact a technology's development, and the ability to identify and trace the development of these key innovations comes with a great payoff for researchers and technology managers. In this article, we present a framework for identifying the technology's main evolutionary pathway. What is unique about this framework is that we introduce new indicators that reflect the connectivity and the modularity in the interior citation network to distinguish between the stages of a technology's development. We also show how information about a family of patents can be used to build a comprehensive patent citation network. Finally, we apply integrated approaches of main path analysis (MPA)-namely global MPA and global key-route main analysis-for extracting technological trajectories at different technological stages. We illustrate this approach with dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), a low-cost solar cell belonging to the group of thin-film solar cells, contributing to the remarkable growth in the renewable energy industry. The results show how this approach can trace the main development trajectory of a research field and distinguish key technologies to help decision makers manage the technological stages of their innovation processes more effectively. © 2021 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. The Effects of Curvature of Edge Screen on Subjective Feelings in Smartphone Usage

As the penetration rate of Smartphone grows high and the market gets saturated, the technological and aesthetic progress for manufacturers are heavily demanded to sustain their market share. To meet such demands, manufacturers continuously improve the design of their products. As the design of smartphone varies by manufacturers, there have been many existing researches to identify the relationships between various physical dimensions of smartphones and how users feel (Chowdhury, A., & Kanetkar, M., 2017; Lee, S., Kyung, G., Lee, J., Moon, S. K., & Park, K. J., 2016; Pereira, A., Miller, T., Huang, Y. M., Odell, D., & Rempel, D., 2013; Sung, K., Cho, J., & Freivalds, A., 2016). Recently, in accordance with the development and improvement of flexible displays, curved displays have been applied on smartphones with various curvatures. The popular one among them is the “edge screen” on smartphones, which refers to curved display implemented either on one single side or both sides. Considering that physical dimensions such as shape and size are the important features for customer satisfaction (Hwang, 2012; Ling, C., Hwang, W., and Salvendy, G., 2007), curvature of edge screen can influence on user comfort when the users carry out their tasks on their smartphones. However, such issue hasn’t been dealt in previous studies. Therefore, as a preliminary study, this study aimed to identify the relationships between curvatures of edge screens and subjective feelings in smartphone usage with various usage patterns using subjective evaluation experiment. In this laboratory study, 47 subjects assessed their subjective feelings (grip comfort, control comfort, stability, front visibility, side visibility) towards given samples with four different kinds of usage patterns.
