Modeling the human brain as a network has been widely considered as a powerful approach to investigating the brain's structural and functional systems. However, many previous approaches focused on a single scale of brain network and the multi-scale nature of brain networks has been rarely explored yet. This paper put forward a novel framework to construct multi-scale common networks of brains via multi-scale spectral clustering of fiber connections among DICCCOLs. Specifically, the recently developed and publicly released DICCCOLs provide the nodal structural and functional correspondence across individuals, and thus the employed multi-scale spectral clustering algorithm divided the DICCCOL landmarks and their connections into sub-networks with correspondences on multiple scales. Experimental results showed the promise of the constructed multi-scale networks in applications of structural and functional connectivity mapping. As an application example, these multi-scale networks are used to guide the identification of multi-scale common fiber bundles across individuals and to facilitate the bundle's functional role analysis, which could enable other tract-based and network-based analyses in the future. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Electron tomography (ET) is a powerful technology allowing the three-dimensional (3D) imaging of cellular ultrastructure. These structures are reconstructed from a set of micrographs taken at different sample orientations, the final volume being the solution of a general inverse problem. Two different approaches are used in this context: iterative methods and filtered backprojection. Iterative methods are known to provide high-resolution 3D reconstructions for ET under noisy and incomplete data conditions. However, all previous implementations have been restricted to the straight-line projection models. This is not accurate since electron trajectories in electron microscopes do not follow the straight-line optics assumed for X-rays, and biological samples may warp as a result of being exposed to an electron beam. Compensation for curvilinear trajectories, nonlinear electron optics, and sample warping constitutes a major advance in large-field ET and has made possible resolution down to the molecular level in reconstructions of whole cells. At present these advances are limited to filtered backprojection and have been implemented in the software package TxBR. As the next step in this development, we have modified the ASART method in conjunction with a 3D model. By employing alignment based on general curvilinear trajectories we have been able to show that further improvements can be achieved with iterative methods. We also discuss a unified treatment of the alignment and reconstruction problems within the framework of iterative methods, and the relationship between formulas employed in the update step and cross-validation methods. This paper considers minimax regret 1-sink location problems in dynamic path networks. A dynamic path network consists of an undirected path with positive edge lengths and constant edge capacity and the vertex supply which is nonnegative value, called weight, is unknown but only the interval of weight is known. A particular assignment of weight to each vertex is called a scenario. Under any scenario, the cost of a sink is defined as the minimum time to complete evacuation for all weights (evacuees), and the regret of a sink location x is defined as the cost of x minus the cost of an optimal sink. Then, the problem is to find a point as a sink such that the maximum regret for all possible scenarios is minimized. We present an O(n log2 n) time algorithm for minimax regret 1-sink location problems in dynamic path networks, where n is the number of vertices in the network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Based on the homotopy analysis method, a general analytic technique for strongly nonlinear problems, a Maple package of automated derivation （ADHO） for periodic nonlinear oscillation systems is presented. This Maple package is valid for periodic oscillation systems in rather general, and can automatically deliver the accurate approximations of the frequency co and the mean of motion δof a nonlinear periodic oscillator. Based on the homotopy analysis method which is valid even for highly nonlinear problems, this Maple package can give accurate approximate expressions even for nonlinear oscillation systems with strong nonlinearity. Besides, the package is user-friendly： One just needs to input a governing equation and initial conditions, and then gets satisfied analytic approximations in few seconds. Several different types of examples are given in this paper to illustrate the validity of this Maple package. Genetic Algorithm （GA） is widely adopted in optimization and the improvement of its optimization performance is attracting many researchers＇ attentions. In solving practical probtems in the process of architectural design, the ways of converting design problems into mathematical models that can be addressed by GA are of great significance in achieving final optimal results. However, no such rute that can be applied to such conversion has been devetoped so far. In general, problems which can be addressed by GA can be divided into combinatorial problems and numerical probtems. In this paper, by means of attempting to disintegrate a complicated architectural probtem into combinatorial and numericat probtems, the author discusses feasibitity and practicality of sotving these two types of problems simultaneousty utitizing GA and discloses both advantages and disadvantages of GA by comparing with other algorithms.

It is an important task to tune performance for sparse matrix vector multiplication (SpMV), but it is also a difficult task because of its irregularity. In this paper, we propose a cache blocking method to improve the performance of SpMV on the emerging GPU architecture. The sparse matrix is partitioned into many sub-blocks, which are stored in CSR format. With the blocking method, the corresponding part of vector x can be reused in the GPU cache, so the time spent on accessing the global memory for vector x is reduced heavily. Experimental results on GeForce GTX 480 show that SpMV kernel with the cache blocking method is 5x faster than the unblocked CSR kernel in the best case. © 2012 IEEE.

Neuromorphic engineers aim to mimic the precise and efficient mechanisms of the nervous system to process information using spikes from sensors to actuators. There are many available works that sense and process information in a spike-based way. But there are still several gaps in the actuation and motor control field in a spike-based way. Spike-based Proportional-Integrative- Derivative controllers (PID) are present in the literature. On the other hand, neuro-inspired control models as VITE (Vector Integration To End point) and FLETE (Factorization of muscle Length and muscle Tension) are also present in the literature. This paper presents another step toward the spike implementation of those neuro-inspired models. We present a spike-based ramp multiplier. VITE algorithm generates the way to achieve a final position targeted by a mobile robotic arm. The block presented is used as a gate for the way involved and it also puts the incoming movement on speed with a variable slope profile. Only spikes for information representation were used and the process is in real time. The software simulation based on Simulink and Xilinx System Generator shows the accurate adjust to the traditional processing for short time periods and the hardware tests confirm and extend the previous simulated results for any time. We have implemented the spikes generator, the ramp multiplier and the low pass filter into the Virtex-5 FPGA and connected this with an USB-AER (Address Event Representation) board to monitor the spikes. © 2012 IEEE.

Energy consumption is an important issue in the design and use of networks. In this paper, we explore energy savings in networks via a rate adaptation model. This model can be represented by a cost-minimization network routing problem with discrete cost functions. We formulate this problem as an integer program, which is proved to be NP-hard. Then a constant approximation algorithm is developed. In our proposed method, we first transform the program into a continuous-cost network routing problem, and then we approximate the optimal solution by a two-step rounding process. We show by analysis that, for uniform demands, our method provides a constant approximation for the uniform network routing problem with discrete costs. A bicriteria network routing problem is also developed so that a trade-off can be made between energy consumption and network delay. Analytical results for this latter model are also presented. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

A trimaran is a multihulled boat consisting of a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls, attached to the main hull with lateral struts. There have been many studies highlighting that a trimaran takes many advantages over other types of hulls especially the roll performance, because of the greater resistance to rolling that the outrigger hulls offer. In order to study the rolling motion of a trimaran, an accurate roll motion model is needed. The rolling motion of a trimaran is inherently nonlinear due to both nonlinearities in the restoring moment and damping moment. This paper presents an estimation method to predict the linear and nonlinear roll damping parameters based on free roll decay experiments of a trimaran, whose outrigger hulls are movable both along the longitudinal and transverse direction. The estimation method is based on least square support vector regression (LS-SVR) theory. In order to verify the performance of this new estimation method, the least square (LS) estimation method is also applied to identify the parameters. Both methods show satisfying performances, however models generated by LS-SVR shows less accumulated errors than models generated by LS.
