The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the unprecedented devastating catastrophes with severe public health threat globally. Low and middle income countries (LMICs) are trying hard to cope with the rapidly changing global scenario and trying to mitigate this double crisis of pandemic and economic recession. Background and Objective: Mobile applications could be effectively used for dietary intake assessment, physical activity monitoring, behavior improvement, and nutrition education. The aim of this review is to determine the effectiveness of mobile applications in improving nutrition behaviors through a systematic review of literature. Methods: The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO: registration number CRD42018118809, and followed PRISMA guidelines. We involved original articles including mobile electronic devices for improving dietary intake, physical activity, and weight management in adult populations in this review. Data were retrieved from January 2010 to December 2018 with PubMed, Web of Science, Excerpta Medica Database (Embase), and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied health Literature (CINAHL) as data sources. Authors individually screened the titles and abstracts, then full articles in order to obtain papers that met inclusion criteria. Results: The database search yielded 2962 records. After removing the duplicates and analyzing the full text papers a total of 8 original articles were reviewed. Two articles showed obvious bias and were not included in our results or discussion. The remaining six articles with low to moderate bias risk were included in this systematic review. Three selected studies were randomized control trials (RCTs) with over 180 participants each. The other three studies were a nested trial, a case-control trial, and a pilot RCT with 36, 162, and 24 participants respectively. All larger RCTs and the small case control trail showed significant improvements in some nutritional-health objectives measured. The other two trials showed insignificant improvements in outcomes measured between groups. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential significant health benefits acquirable through mobile health application-assisted nutrition interventions. Recent advancements in the discovery of natural products have made significant progress in rapidly identifying known compounds from complex extracts using advanced spectroscopic technologies. Among these methods, one powerful approach called MS/MS molecular networking (MN) organizes chemical similarity based on MS/MS fragmentation data, serving as a valuable complement to traditional dereplication strategies. In our ongoing research focused on lead discovery from a sustainable medicinal source, an aquaculture soft coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum, the MN profiling approach revealed the chemical diversity of biscembranoid analogs. By analyzing the MN pattern, biscembranoid derivatives with unique MS/MS fragments were prioritized for further investigation. Two novel biscembranoids, sarcotroxide A (1) and B (2), were successfully obtained through targeted isolation. These novel biscembranes contained an unprecedented 3-hydroperoxy-3-methylcyclohex-1-ene moiety compared with all biscembranoid analogs. The chemical structures of the two new biscembranoids were confirmed through spectroscopic analyses and in silico calculations. Their anti-inflammatory properties were assessed against the generation of superoxide anion (O₂^•−) and elastase release in activated human neutrophils. Sarcotroxides A (1) and B (2) exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting O₂^•− accumulation (with 43.67% and 61.62% inhibition) and elastase release (with 38.21% and 61.62% inhibition) at 10 µM. These findings validated the potential of these biscembranoids from the cultured S. trocheliophorum as promising candidates for the future development of anti-inflammatory agents specifically designed to target neutrophils. © 2023 The Authors

Global ground-level measurements of elements in ambient particulate matter (PM) can provide valuable information to understand the distribution of dust and trace elements, assess health impacts, and investigate emission sources. We use X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the elemental composition of PM samples collected from 27 globally distributed sites in the Surface PARTiculate mAtter Network (SPARTAN) over 2019-2023. Consistent protocols are applied to collect all samples and analyze them at one central laboratory, which facilitates comparison across different sites. Multiple quality assurance measures are performed, including applying reference materials that resemble typical PM samples, acceptance testing, and routine quality control. Method detection limits and uncertainties are estimated. Concentrations of dust and trace element oxides (TEO) are determined from the elemental dataset. In addition to sites in arid regions, a moderately high mean dust concentration (6 μg/m) in PM is also found in Dhaka (Bangladesh) along with a high average TEO level (6 μg/m). High carcinogenic risk (>1 cancer case per 100000 adults) from airborne arsenic is observed in Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kanpur (India), and Hanoi (Vietnam). Industries of informal lead-acid battery and e-waste recycling as well as coal-fired brick kilns likely contribute to the elevated trace element concentrations found in Dhaka.

Background and objective: The promising use of artificial intelligence (AI) to emulate human empathy may help a physician engage with a more empathic doctor-patient relationship. This study demonstrates the application of artificial empathy based on facial emotion recognition to evaluate doctor-patient relationships in clinical practice. Methods: A prospective study used recorded video data of doctor-patient clinical encounters in dermatology outpatient clinics, Taipei Municipal Wanfang Hospital, and Taipei Medical University Hospital collected from March to December 2019. Two cameras recorded the facial expressions of four doctors and 348 adult patients during regular clinical practice. Facial emotion recognition was used to analyze the basic emotions of doctors and patients with a temporal resolution of 1 second. In addition, a physician-patient satisfaction questionnaire was administered after each clinical session, and two standard patients gave impartial feedback to avoid bias. Background Superagers are individuals aged 80 and over with youthful episodic memory that can provide insights into protective mechanisms against age-related memory loss and dementia. We aim to study telomere length in human superagers since telomere attrition is considered a hallmark of ageing and can explain some structural and functional changes occurring in an ageing organism. We therefore tested whether telomere length is associated with successful episodic memory of superagers. Method Telomere length was measured in peripheral blood cells from 57 superagers (mean age 81.9 years ± 2.0 std, 61.4% women) and 48 age-matched typical older adults with normal memory for age (mean age 82.4 years ± 1.9 std, 64.6% women) selected from the Vallecas Project cohort. A high-throughput quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization technique (HT Q-FISH) (Life length, Spain) was used. This technology has a low detection limit of < 100 bp, enabling the quantification of short telomeres that can be more informative of telomere dysfunction than centrality measures. Result Superagers have significantly shorter median telomere lengths than typical older adults ( p = 0.0009, t = -3.4) and show a higher proportion of short telomeres (<6 Kbp) ( p = 0.0005, t = 3.6) and extremely short telomeres (<3 Kbp) ( p = 9. 4×10 −5 ; t = 4.1) than typical older adults. Thus, superagers have shorter average telomere lengths and a higher proportion of short telomeres, which are most associated with genome instability. Conclusion The successful episodic memory of our superager population is not associated with long telomere length or the presence of fewer short telomeres measured in a cross-sectional setting. Further analysis exploring telomere attrition rate of these two groups over time may help to interpret the current findings.

Objective To determine the association between Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) and oxidative stress biomarkers in the mother, placenta, and newborn. Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following the PRISMA guidelines. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE and the Web of Science database without language restrictions. The search was updated on December 28, 2023, and included reports published between 1998 and 2021. Two independent reviewers performed article selection and data extraction. Results Our findings show a significant increase in malondialdehyde and 8-isoprostane levels in the maternal and placenta of women with GDM compared to those without GDM (SMD [95% CI] = 1.99 [1.51, 2.48], Tau 2 = 1.51, I 2 = 94%, p < 0.00001; SMD [95% CI] = 1.90 [0.08, 2.72], Tau 2 = 1.14, I 2 = 93%, p < 0.00001, respectively). Additionally, there was a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in maternal plasma (SMD [95% CI] = -2.80 [-5.23, -0.36], Tau 2 = 7.56, I 2 = 98%, p < 0.00001). However, no significant changes in SOD were observed in the placenta or the umbilical cord blood of offspring from women with GDM (SMD [95% CI] = -1.79 [-4.66, 1.07], Tau 2 = 6.23, I 2 = 97%, p < 0.00001; SMD [95% CI] = -1.07 [-3.37, 1.24], Tau 2 = 5.31, I 2 = 97%, p < 0.00001, respectively). Conclusion These results suggest an association between GDM and increased oxidative stress levels in both maternal and fetal circulation, as well as the placenta. The high heterogeneity in the results of the meta-analysis, which could be due to clinical and methodological factors, is a limitation of this study.
