For future healthcare in the terahertz(THz)band,a triple-band microstrip planar antenna integrated with metamaterial(MTM)based on a polyimide substrate is *** frequencies of operation are 500,600,and 880 *** triple-band capability is accomplished by etching metamaterial on the patch without affecting the overall antenna *** of a partial ground plane,a full ground plane is used as a buffer to shield the body from back radiation emitted by the *** overall dimension of the proposed antenna is 484×484μm^(2).The antenna’s performance is investigated based on different crucial factors,and excellent results are *** gain for the frequencies 500,600,880GHz is 6.41,6.77,10.1 dB,respectively while the efficiency for the same frequencies is 90%,95%,96%,*** research has been conducted by mounting the presented antenna on a single phantom layer with varying dielectric *** results show that the design works equally well with and without the phantom model,in contrast to a partially ground antenna,whose performance is influenced by the presence of the phantom *** a result,the presented antenna could be helpful for future healthcare applications in the THz band.

The use of brain computer interfaces (BCIs) is crucial to the development of neural prosthetics and neuroscience. BCIs assist paralyzed patients by enabling them to control computers or robots using their neural activity. Optically transparent BCIs, combined with optical imaging modalities, enable simultaneous gathering of high-resolution electrophysiological signals and imaging of neural activities. In this work, we report the investigation of the mechanical behavior of an ultra-thin glass-based brain machine interface probe when subjected to various types of forces encountered during insertion and engagement into the brain tissues. Results of probe thickness optimization show that electrodes can be 25 µm thick while maintaining a factor of safety against failure > 1. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

In this paper, we present a tunable reflective filter based on graphene hyperbolic metamaterial (GHMM) at infrared frequencies. We calculate the reflectance spectrum of the filter using the transfer matrix method (TMM), and our analysis shows that increasing graphene monolayers drastically shift the reflectance spectra to shorter wavelengths. We also observe that modifying the gate voltage would change the chemical potential of the graphene, which eventually affects the reflectance spectra of the GHMM. Moreover, we observe that the dispersion profile of the GHMM can be controlled by modifying graphene monolayers and the chemical potential of the graphene. We believe that the proposed GHMM could offer great opportunities in developing switchable devices. © 2022 IEEE.

The main focus of this research is on improving the performance of dynamic systems with actuator non-linearities and time-varying disturbances. To this end, using the concept of finite-time stability, a novel observer is presented to estimate the disturbances in systems with input non-linearities. Then, introducing an innovative sliding manifold, a robust observer-based technique is derived to guarantee the finite-time stability of the sliding surface. Hence, the closed-loop system would be stable in the presence of hard non-linearities and time-varying disturbances. The performance of the proposed approach was assessed in using a simulation study of two numerical examples. The obtained results and comparison with a conventional method confirmed the benefits of the suggested approach. © 2022 The Authors. With the advent of large commercial constellations carrying synthetic aperture radars (SAR), the problem of radio frequency interference (RFI) between different SAR satellites will soon arise due to the shared use of spectrum. Such interference manifests as distortion and artificial artifacts which reduce the quality of SAR images. This paper proposes a novel approach to tackle the interference problem by exploiting the RFI signal as an additional source of illumination acting as a bistatic radar transmitter. As such, rather than treating the RFI as an adversarial signal that needs to be suppressed, we benefit from this signal to further improve the acquired image quality, where the primary image is generated based on the satellite's own signal as a typical active monostatic source. In order to evaluate this approach, we first lay the geometry and signal model including the required sensor architecture that leverage the well-structured SAR waveform. Then, we present the required modifications to typical SAR signal processing workflow such that both monostatic and bistatic images are overlapped. Results based on realistic signal emulation are then shown for a typical interference scenario where the proposed hybrid approach demonstrates excellent potential to tackle SAR RFI problems. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we design and theoretically investigate a tunable and compact reflective filter in graphene based hyperbolic metamaterials. Using an effective medium theory and a transfer matrix approach, we calculate the reflectance characteristics at mid-infrared frequencies. Our theoretical analysis shows that by changing the chemical potential of the graphene, the reflectance spectra of the filter can be shifted to the shorter wavelengths. We also show that for a fixed chemical potential, the reflectance spectra of the filter can be further blue-shifted by increasing the number of graphene monolayers. Interestingly, we find that the reflectance is almost independent of the angle of incident and polarization (TE/TM) of the incoming waves. We believe that our proposed metamaterial based filter could be a potential candidate for developing tunable filters and switches. © 2022 IEEE.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, which is pulsed using PWM control, on Staphylococcus aureus. To evaluate the disinfection effect of Near-UV LED light, three types of Near-UV LEDs with wavelengths of 395 nm, 385 nm, and 365 nm were installed within a sealed space inside an incubator and energized with a forward current of 1000 mA and a forward voltage of 3.6 V, and the disinfection rate under each type of light was assessed. Additionally, the disinfection effect was evaluated when the same three types of Near-UV LEDs were pulsed with a 50% duty cycle. As a result, 100% disinfection was achieved with 365 nm Near-UV LED direct-current irradiation for 120 seconds, and a 93% disinfection rate was obtained with pulsed irradiation for 150 seconds. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper a novel hybrid mathematical model for the local iron loss power density calculation method of Interior Permanent Magnets Synchronous Machines (IPMSM) using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is presented. The proposed model calculates hysteresis losses based on experimentally obtained static hysteresis loops of the ferromagnetic material. This mathematical model provides an alternative for the scarcity of experimental data by estimating hysteresis loops using the Preisach distribution model. The model incorporates waveforms of non-sinusoidal magnetic flux density for each and every finite element individually to precisely calculate eddy current losses. Therefore, its application is suitable for the estimation of local iron loss distribution and its detrimental thermal effects in the wide-speed range operation. The proposed model was verified on an IPMSM machine used for a case study, and it was compared with the conventional method based on Bertotti iron loss model. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, various images were used in place of textual information as a source to develop a secure communication system with the assist of Fraunhofer, Gerchberg-Saxton & Fresnel holographic algorithm. The communicative hologram was developed by means of adding the far-field amplitude of the main object image and reference or noise image in the Fraunhofer algorithm. The output image overlapping constraints occurred at the receiver side. This problem can be resolved by using an algorithm called the GS algorithm. GS algorithm provides an iterative approach to improve the probability of success of phase retrieval. Because of its iterative nature, this process is relatively slow. Finally, the Fresnel algorithm was used where the wave amplitude was obtained by the Fresnel diffraction formula and the hologram is calculated by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Among these fast algorithms, the contrast level of the 256×256 reconstructed image in the Fresnel algorithm was 0.875, where Fraunhofer and GS algorithm returned only 0.6643 and 0.7314 respectively, and the entropy was 7.9895, which was higher than the other two. Owing to having these promising results, the proposed Fresnel algorithm can be used for security in the field of communication. © 2022 IEEE.

Diffusion models have achieved remarkable success in generating high quality image and video data. More recently, they have also been used for image compression with high perceptual quality. In this paper, we present a novel approach to extreme video compression leveraging the predictive power of diffusion-based generative models at the decoder. The conditional diffusion model at the decoder takes several compressed frames and generates the subsequent frames. Since the encoder can perfectly replicate the generation process, it can decide which frames to transmit and which one can be generated to achieve the desired quality level. Therefore, only image compression is applied at the encoder, while the time correlation among the frames is utilized at the decoder in the generation process, which transfer the complexity from the encoder to the decoder. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme compared to standard codecs such as H.264 and H.265 in the low bpp regime considering perceptual quality metrics such as the learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS) and the Frechet video distance (FVD). While this framework is not yet competitive with state of the art video compression methods, the presented results show their potential, particularly in the very low bit rate regime, and we will highlight its various advantages that could make it a viable alternative in certain applications.
