From 2020 to 2022, COVID-19 emerged as a widespread global crisis impacting public health and the global economy. Simultaneously, conventional Pneumonia continues to pose a significant threat to global mortality rates, particularly among children. Notably, the pulmonary ramifications caused by COVID-19 and Pneumonia exhibit striking resemblance, leading to analogous clinical complexities. Therefore, expedient and accurate detection methodologies are imperative to mitigate the mortality toll and overarching consequences of both COVID-19 and Pneumonia. Conventional diagnostic techniques frequently experience delays and errors, which have an impact on patient outcomes. This study developed a tailored 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) to classify COVID-19 and Pneumonia precisely from CT images. The 3D CNN structure effectively captured spatial correlations among CT slices, enhancing the model's ability to detect complex patterns indicative of COVID-19 and Pneumonia. Furthermore, CBAM enhanced feature discrimination by adaptively recalibrating channel and spatial attention, allowing the model to focus on salient features in CT images. The proposed system adeptly learned nuances from CT scans by carefully examining illness-specific properties. Despite several challenges, the proposed investigation got an impressive f-1 score of 98% and an exceptional accuracy rate of 98.29%. This accomplishment highlights the enormous potential of the proposed methodology to transform respiratory problem patient care and diagnostic procedures. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of a cost-effective 500W half-bridge LLC resonant DC-DC converter optimized for high-efficiency, low-power applications. The converter utilizes Gallium Nitride (GaN) FETs, achieving a peak efficiency of around 90% to meet the increasing demand for compact and reliable power conversion in the renewable energy, industrial automation, and telecommunication sectors. It operates with a nominal input voltage of 72V (in a range of 63 to 75V) and delivers a 14.5V/40A output. The resonant tank design methodology ensures exclusive inductive region operation, enabling zero voltage switching (ZVS) under all load conditions to minimize switching losses, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and device stress. Experimental results demonstrate a 1–10% efficiency improvement using GaN FETs over traditional MOSFETs, particularly at higher power levels. The design incorporates an adaptive protection framework that includes configurable over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-current precautions to ensure resilience under transient and fault conditions. We confirm stable operation at a 100kHz switching frequency through comprehensive load-varying tests, maintaining high efficiency across different load conditions.

In this paper, design of a new frequency tunable antenna has been incorporated which satisfies all the desired characteristics of wearable antennas such as simple planar geometry, small size, easy reconfiguration mechanism, flexibility, low-cost, low back radiation, good tuning range and good efficiency. In the proposed topology, the operating frequency is altered by revolving a metasurface located in the near-field region of a microstrip patch antenna having circular geometry. The circular-shaped patch antenna has defected ground structure which raises the bandwidth, gain and radiation efficiency. The tuning metasurface is circular in shape which is made from flexible silicon polymer Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) loaded with conductive stub made with conductive fabric. The stub controls the distribution of the electric field and maximizes the frequency tuning. By revolving the metasurface in full 360-degree cycle, antenna’s operating frequency can be tuned in wide range, i.e., 5.2 GHz to 5.75 GHz. The proposed tuning technique avoids heavy and complex bias circuits; thus, the antenna becomes simple, compact and free from biasing losses. The antenna maintains excellent gain and efficiency in all the operating states. This new design offers significant advances over the existing designs of reconfigurable wearable antennas. This new design could have significant contribution in wearable technology both for medical and non-medical applications.

This research investigates the effectiveness of geopolymer concrete incorporating fly ash in environments rich in chlorides;in contrast to conventional Portland cement concrete (OPC). The study emphasizes essential characteristics such as workability, mechanical strength, capillary water absorption, open porosity, and chloride migration. The experiments demonstrated that geopolymer concrete exhibits a 30% enhancement in slump values, reflecting improved workability, and its compressive strength rose by 14.90–23.94% when compared with OPC. A significant reduction in binder content led to a notable decrease in capillary water absorption, highlighting a positive impact on long-term durability. With time, geopolymer concrete showed a reduction in open porosity and chloride migration coefficient, indicating better resistance to chloride penetration in marine settings. Although these outcomes underscore the potential of geopolymer concrete to improve structural durability, especially in marine infrastructure, additional optimization is required to tackle its relatively higher capillary water absorption and chloride migration during the initial stages. These results contribute to the ongoing investigation of sustainable building materials, offering valuable insights into geopolymer concrete’s ability to endure severe chloride exposure and serve as a durable solution for corrosion management in marine infrastructure. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Shiraz University 2024.

As technology develops and data demands get higher, 5G technology increases capacity, improves connectivity, and is more flexible with user mobility. The Radio over Fiber (RoF) technique on millimeter-wave is an attractive solution to provide high data rates and network capacity. This study conducted a design and simulation of a millimeter wave-based RoF system with a radio frequency of 64 GHz. A phase modulator is an external modulation technique to generate millimeter-wave signals. The considered parameters are the Bit Error Rate (BER), Q Factor, and Eye Diagram parameters for system analysis by varying optical cable lengths of 1 km, 3 km, and 5 km. By varying the length of the optical fiber, the system performance does not meet the recommended parameters for an optical fiber length of5 km, where the resulting minimum value of BER is greater than 10 {-9}. This result shows that long transmission should consider dispersion factors for a millimeter wave-based RoF for 5G applications. © 2022 IEEE.

The importance of video compression technology is highly emphasized according to the advancement of display technology which plays a crucial role in many industries. Video compression technology is important in the aspect of reducing bandwidth usage, optimizing storage space, and enhancing the efficiency of data transmission. Video electronics Standards Association (VESA) Display Compression-M (VDC-M) video compression standard [1], as released by the VESA, shows high compression ratio and high performance. In this paper, we propose a hardware architecture for transform entropy decoding which supports the VDC-M standard. It can extract and align quantized coefficients which are transmitted from encoder to decoder for reconstruction. The utilization of optimized entropy coding techniques enhances the overall performance, making the proposed hardware architecture contribute to advanced video compression in modern display technologies. © 2024 IEEE.

Passive Optical Network or PON is one of the widely used technologies in the application of optical fiber. Currently, there are various types of PON, some of which are still in the development phase, including XG-PON. This study designs and analyzes the configuration of XG-PON for FTTH using Optisystem software by considering parameters of the Q Factor and BER values. Two considered schemes are Downstream and Upstream XG-PON topologies with 1:32 and 1:64 splitting ratios. FTTH XG-PON 1:32 Downstream is effective at a distance of 40 - 41 km, FTTH XG-PON 1:64 Downstream is effective at a distance of 23 - 24 km, FTTH XG-PON 1:32 Upstream is effective at a distance of 38 - 39 km, and FTTH XG-PON 1:64 Upstream is effective at a distance of 23 - 24 km. According to the obtained data, the Q Factor for XG-PON is inversely proportional to adding distance, whereas the BER is directly related to adding distance. The proposed configuration can be a reference to develop an XG-PON for further research and deployment. © 2022 IEEE.

To face the complexity introduced by the ever-increasing participation of new energy sources, storage systems and controllable loads to electricity markets, Distributed Energy Systems must optimize the power exchange. Usually, Energy Management System (EMS) are used to manage Micro-Grids (MGs) operations, but computational timings may become prohibitive, due to high number of constraints and links between parameters and technical constraints. This paper describes the evolution of the Mixed Integer Linear programming (MILP) MATLAB Based Energy Management System (MB-EMS) developed at the University of Genoa, aimed at optimizing the operating costs of a MG or plant, considering technical constraints and limitations of electrical and thermal production units, energy storage systems, non-programmable loads and flexible loads. Costs related to maintenance interventions and CO2emissions costs are also included, as well as incentives related to the High-Efficiency Cogeneration systems. Specific test cases for a real MG are solved in a short computational time over a time horizon of one year. Calculations are rapidly performed, also when dealing with 15 minutes resolution problems. In this sense, the developed tool can be used both as a real time scheduler, as instance for participation in the energy market sector, and in long term planning problems. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, several industries have increased their demand for processing precision, automatic detection, and visualization interfaces. Therefore, to keep pace with the fourth industrial revolution, machine tool operators install a large number of sensors on machine tools to obtain more precise physical quantities during processing and use a variety of sensors to obtain measurements in various situations. However, these additional sensors on machine tools result in complicated wire layouts, which exhibit negative effects on processing. Such problems lead to the birth of wireless data transmission, which is expected to become the new standard in the future. At present, there is more and more interactive integration between relevant embedded system and the machine tool, which allows information communication between each other in the wireless domain. However, generally, the majority of machine tool operators focus on optimizing the sensing conditions during processing, but they disregard the importance of information security. In the current era of the Internet of Things (IoT), information security is regarded as a crucial factor. For the wireless communication between the IoT equipment for each machine in the machining field, the transmitted data are almost exposed within public space directly due to the loss in constraint and protection of physical wiring. Therefore, such a process can easily be intercepted by other devices that capture information on relevant status of the machine or command messages received by the controller, where intentional individual may possibly control the operating mechanism and progress of entire plant. This leads to theft of relevant secrets in manufacturing technology for the subject company, or intentional shutdown, machine damage, and vicious blackmailing attacks. Solar power is primarily generated through largescale solar power plants. However, several factors can disrupt the output of these plants, with cloud cover being one of the most significant. To predict the effect caused by cloud cover, initially the cloud images should be segmented, and the contour lines of those images should be identified. This part of the study examines multiple algorithms including machine learning and deep learning models to segment the cloud images and detect the contour lines of them. The aim of this part of the study is to test, evaluate, and validate the segmentation and contour identification models to determine the velocity vectors of the clouds. The accuracy of velocity vector patterns is highly relying on the contour lines identified from this approach, making this a crucial step in forecasting cloud movement and its prediction of the outcome of large-scale PV solar power plants under grid 4.0 within the smart grid context. © 2024 IEEE.
