This paper presents a filtering method to clean the backscattered signal received by a reader of frequency-coded cross-polarized chipless RFID tags. The proposed approach eases an automatic decoding of the received signal, and it is based on a proper time-frequency representation. Preliminary tests with both simulated and experimental data support the developed method. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper explores the development of an intelligent, low-cost, voice-controlled autonomous wheelchair designed to enhance mobility for individuals with disabilities. The wheelchair integrates diverse data from multiple devices, including a voice recognition module, joystick module, ultrasonic sensors, and solar panels, to provide a comprehensive and adaptive user experience. Leveraging massive information from these interconnected devices, the wheelchair employs artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to refine its responsiveness to users’ voice commands, improving adaptability to individual speech patterns over time. The solar panels contribute to the wheelchair’s sustainability by harnessing solar energy for battery charging, ensuring prolonged operation without frequent recharging. This study details the design methodology, fabrication process, and performance testing of the wheelchair, showcasing its capabilities such as an optimum speed of 0.89 m/s, a load capacity of 20 kg, and effective obstacle avoidance. Additionally, the paper addresses the wheelchair’s advantages, potential limitations, and future enhancements. By leveraging diverse data sources and intelligent systems, this innovative wheelchair aims to significantly improve mobility, individuality, and worth of life for beings with mobility challenges and the elderly. © 2025 River Publishers.

The utilization of renewable energy (RE) has increased worldwide because it is one of the effective ways to minimize greenhouse gases. The power outputs of photovoltaic (PV) and wind farms depend on weather conditions. High penetration of intermittent renewable energy (IRE) will put pressure on frequency regulation, and frequency fluctuation will increase because IRE does not participate in frequency regulation. This study evaluated the role of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the frequency regulation of a grid with large-scale IRE. The simulations were conducted in the MATLAB-Simulink environment, taking into consideration the operating conditions of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) power system, such as frequency deviation limits. Eskom's (the RSA utility company) policy requires its operators to keep the system frequency between 49.85 Hz and 50.15 Hz 95% of the time. The BESS was integrated into the load frequency control (LFC) model to assist with frequency regulation and maintain the frequency between 49.85 Hz and 50.15 Hz. © 2023 IEEE.

An ultra-wideband (UWB) slotted compact Vivaldi antenna with a microstrip line feed was evaluated for microwave imaging (MI) applications. The recommended FR4 substrate-based Vivaldi antenna is 50×50×1.5 mm3 in size. The proposed compact Vivaldi antenna showed good radiation characteristics and spanned an ultra-wide bandwidth of 10 GHz, ranging from 3.6 to 13.6 GHz, using a microstrip line feed with a radial stub, tapered slots, and resonant cavities. After analyzing the simulation findings, the proposed compact slotted UWB Vivaldi antenna was compared with the basic Vivaldi antenna. The maximum gain and efficiency were 7.35 dB and 82%, respectively. The antenna was simulated in the time domain using the computer simulation technology (CST) microwave studio. The frequency domain solver was also used for cross-validation, and the results were equally good. In conclusion, the proposed compact Vivaldi antenna is a good option for microwave imaging applications. © 2023 The Institute of electronics and Information Engineers.

The present review delves into the escalating significance of cybersecurity within the domain of Ocean Renewable Energy (ORE), with emphasis on wave energy power plants. The susceptibility of crucial infrastructure to cyber threats has been amplified by the escalation in interconnectivity and digitalization of energy systems. The absence of a thorough academic investigation into cybersecurity remedies for ocean energy systems has been recognized, despite the pressing demand. This research conforms to the systematic literature review standards established by Kitchenham and Charters. The study investigates three principal areas of interest: smart ocean, cybersecurity for renewable energy systems, and marine data security. The results highlight the necessity of improving the ability of power plants to withstand cyber attacks and emphasize the potential of various technologies, including the Internet of Things, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing in achieving this objective. The aforementioned analysis emphasizes the importance of ongoing exploration and advancement in cybersecurity protocols. It recommends that forthcoming efforts concentrate on quantum computing and policy frameworks that facilitate the establishment of robust, all-encompassing, and just cybersecurity resolutions in the domain of ocean energy. © 2023 European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference.

Retinal Blood Vessel Tracking and Diameter Estimation via Gaussian Process With Rider Optimization Algorithm

Retinal blood vessels structure analysis is an important step in the detection of ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. Accurate tracking and estimation of retinal blood vessels in terms of their diameter remains a major challenge in retinal structure analysis. In this research, we develop a rider-based Gaussian approach for accurate tracking and diameter estimation of retinal blood vessels. The diameter and curvature of the blood vessel are assumed as the Gaussian processes. The features are determined for training the Gaussian process using Radon transform. The kernel hyperparameter of Gaussian processes is optimized using Rider Optimization Algorithm for evaluating the direction of the vessel. Multiple Gaussian processes are used for detecting the bifurcations and the difference in the prediction direction is quantified. The performance of the proposed Rider-based Gaussian process is evaluated with mean and standard deviation. Our method achieved high performance with the standard deviation of 0.2499 and mean average of 0.0147, which outperformed the state-of-the-art method by 6.32%. Although the proposed model outperformed the state-of-the-art method in normal blood vessels, in future research, one can include tortuous blood vessels of different retinopathy patients, which would be more challenging due to large angle variations. We used Rider-based Gaussian process for tracking blood vessels to obtain the diameter of retinal blood vessels, and the method performed well on the 'STrutred Analysis of the REtina (STARE) Database' accessed on Oct. 2020 (https://***/~ahoover/stare/). To the best of our knowledge, this experiment is one of the most recent analysis using this type of algorithm. © 2013 IEEE.

Feature learning algorithms that use deep neural networks have shown to outperform traditional hand-crafted feature extraction methods when applied to satellite image time series. This learned features can be used in a multitude of applications such as classification, semantic segmentation, and change detection, among others. In this paper, we employ a feature learning technique to extract representative features from multimission polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) satellite image time series (SITS). To this end, we implement a formulation combining a 1-dimensional convolutional neural network and a stacked auto encoder. We performed experiments on a multimission and multitemporal PolSAR dataset and validated the extracted features through their utility as features in an unsupervised classification problem. © 2024 IEEE.

Change detection (CD) is among the most important tools in natural disaster monitoring. Special emphasis is on heterogeneous CD methods, which allow for a faster response. In this paper, we propose a novel heterogeneous CD method tailored at working with image domains of very different dimensionality, which allows for a greater applicational flexibility. The proposed method integrates deep image-to-image translation, spectral clustering concepts, and manifold learning, and works in a fully unsupervised manner, further enforcing a fast implementation in real-world scenarios. From an application-oriented perspective, the focus is on the recent PRISMA and COSMO-SkyMed missions of the Italian Space Agency. © VDE VERLAG GMBH ∙ Berlin ∙ Offenbach.
