The so-called "last mile" of the telecommunications network, which links residences and business locations to the network, has traditionally been the last bastion of old technology. Residential voice service is still mostly provided via an analog signal over a pair of copper wires that connects the telephone to a switching system in a central office. The high-speed digital technology employed by modern switching systems and inter-office transmission systems does not extend to most residences. The local access network is a landscape of copper wires bound into large cables, splices, cross-boxes and other equipment that has provided voice-grade service over the years. However, the landscape is changing dramatically as both residential and business customers demand more and more bandwidth for a growing number of services including highspeed Internet access and video as well as voice. Teleos such as AT&T and Verizon as well as Multi-Service Operators (MSOs) are both vying to provide the "triple play" (voice, data and video) to these customers. In order to provide the triple play, service providers are introducing digital transmission and optical fiber, which have revolutionized long-haul communication, to the local access network. The Telecommunication engineering Technology program at RIT is responding to this trend by providing courses and laboratory facilities to introduce students to the associated technology. Our Telecommunication Systems Laboratory now features both passive optical network (PON) and hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) technology. These are two leading approaches to provide broadband access to support the triple play. In addition, we are developing new courses to cover topics such as video transmission and broadband network engineering. This paper presents the current status of our laboratory and course development along with our plans for future enhancements. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

The features of the Masters of Science in Telecommunication Systems program at the University of Oklahoma (OU)-Tulsa, are discussed. The program requires all student to complete a minimum of 32 credit hours, including a professional project. The program was created, under the aegis of the School of Electrical and Computer engineering, to produce engineering graduates in telecommunication-related fields. In addition to the common core coursework, students are required to complete 12 hours of technical elective coursework with Telecommunication Systems (TCOM) and computer engineering.

Communication security must be guaranteed when EPON is applied in *** paper gives a general introduction to the EPON system,analyzes the potential threats and attacks pertaining to the EPON system,and presents effective countermea-sures against these threats and attacks with emphasis on the authentication protocols and key distribution.

Technical and regulatory changes motivate the economics of the interconnections to be re-examined for the next-generation Internet. This paper presents a framework for the economics of market-based QoS interconnection networks. The economic model presented captures the characteristics of opportunity costs and demands and suggests strategies for QoS pricing and allocation. We use the statistical results of network simulation to present numerical examples of those market opportunity costs with respect to the contracted QoS network services. Using the model, we show the network economics of market-based QoS interconnections. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The University of Oklahoma has developed a telecommunications Interoperability Laboratory to enhance the educational and research experience of students in the telecommunications Systems program. The Interoperability Lab is a collection of five interconnected technology islands: the Internet Protocol (IP), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Optical, Wireless, and Legacy. Each island is designed as an entity in its own right, but also provides the interconnection capability with any combination of other islands to create a fully functional end-to-end networking environment. This paper describes the architecture of the Interoperability Lab, as well as how it will impact the education of our students.

A Wireless Networked Control Systems review is presented. It begins with a brief history about NCS (Networked Control Systems), recognizing the fundamental features, its advantages over other classical control systems, and the protocols that can be used to do control over the wireless network. AlSão, we deal with the different problems that can affect the network behavior;including interferences and delays that take place when the control acts. The behavior of the system in different environments is shown through simulations using TrueTime blocks, included in a Simulink/MATLAB box. © 2011 IEEE.

As the concept of Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) is gaining popularity among operators and consumers, there is an increasing debate about the performance of the mobile-network-centric UMA architecture versus the IP-centric VCC architecture. While UMA-based FMC solutions are already launched for commercial use, VCC-based solutions are still in their trial stages. The purpose of this paper is to compare the performance of the two architectures based on the call handover (HO) delay and throughput, in order to answer the following question: is preferring UMA over VCC a business decision or a technical performance decision? We found that the two architectures do not significantly differ from one another in throughput when subject to different traffic and delay profiles. Moreover, the literature shows that, similar to UMA, VCC is capable of handling data-session continuity between different network domains. Thus, the choice between UMA and VCC is governed by non-technical factors such as network upgrade cost for different operator profiles. The mobile-network centric UMA is better suited for mobile operators whereas the IP-centric VCC is suited for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) that do not own a licensed spectrum or a mobile core network. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper aims to develop the assessment model of Quality of Experience (QoE) for the upcoming 5G mobile technology. The 5G usage scenarios have been developed by ITU to facilitate mobile capabilities that will be needed in the future, namely Enhanced Mobile Broadband, Ultra-reliable and low latency communications, and Massive Machine type communications. The model links the technical concern of Quality of Service (QoS) to the relevant 5G service experience on each of 5G scenarios. It utilizes the crowdsourcing service quality assessment on the three characteristics. First, it signifies the 5G service applications underlying enhanced multimedia broadband scenario which is differentiated by location-related two cases, i.e. the hotspot area and wide area coverage. Second, the model signifies the 5G service underlying the ultra-reliable and low-latency communications which is focusing on QoS parameters, i.e. latency, reliability and availability. Third, the developed model emphasizes energy efficiency implication on the scenario of massive-machine type communications. Finally, the model can be used by mobile operators as a reference guide to asses and also to improve the quality of experience when the values are below expectation. © 2017 IEEE.

This article discusses the accuracy performance of the Weighted K Nearest Neighbors (WKNN) algorithm which has been widely used by the Received Signal Strength (RSS) fingerprint-based localization in WLAN networks. The basic idea of WKNN algorithm is to estimate the people's position at the weighted geometric center of the K nearest neighbors. However, the placement of Reference Points (RPs) has been recognized as one of the most significant factors to effect the localization accuracy. Therefore, in this paper, we carefully analyze the localization accuracy of WKNN algorithm and illustrate the analytical relations among localization accuracy, physical interval of RPs and environmental dimensions, which provides a guideline to the design of the WLAN fingerprint-based localization systems. Furthermore, the analytical relations obtained from this paper are verified by a series of experiments conducted in the real WLAN networks. Copyright © 2014 Binary Information Press.
