Estimating Formant Frequencies of Vowels Sung by Sopranos Using Weighted Linear Prediction

This study introduces the weighted linear prediction adapted to high-pitched singing voices (WLP-HPSV) method for accurately estimating formant frequencies of vowels sung by lyric sopranos. The WLP-HPSV method employs a variant of the WLP analysis combined with the zero-frequency filtering (ZFF) technique to address specific challenges in formant estimation from singing signals. Evaluation of the WLP-HPSV method compared to the LPC method demonstrated its superior performance in accurately capturing the spectral characteristics of synthetic /u/ vowels and the /a/ and /u/ natural singing vowels. The QCP parameters used in the WLP-HPSV method varied with pitch, revealing insights into the interplay between the vocal tract and glottal characteristics during vowel production. The comparison between the LPC and WLP-HPSV methods highlighted the robustness of the WLP-HPSV method in accurately estimating formant frequencies across different pitches. © 2023 The Voice Foundation

Electromagnetic absorbers based on frequency selective surfaces (FSS) find important applications in various microwave systems. However, the design of highly efficient and at the same time robust and easy-to-implement FSS electromagnetic absorbers presents many challenges. This paper describes the design of a dual-band FSS electromagnetic absorber at Ka band. The design was carried out by a finite element method implemented on a computer for numerical simulation of the FSS cells. The unit cell combines two different kinds of resonant elements that contribute to dual absorption bands. The designed cells exhibit peaks of electromagnetic absorption at 32.3 and 37.9 GHz, with -10 dB bandwidths of 128 and 95 MHz in the two frequency bands, respectively. The proposed absorber shows an absorption coefficient of 0. 99 in the two frequency bands for normal incidence. The specific frequencies of the absorption bands can be changed by scaling the sizes of the unit cells. © 2022 IEEE.

This work explores sidelobe suppression to adaptive beamformers (ABF) based on a recently introduced technique for null placement, proposing new approaches that employ constrained adaptive algorithms. ABF methods primarily aim at a distortionless response with interference suppression, usually not oriented to sidelobe level (SLL) control. However, SLL control might be crucial for radiation efficiency optimization and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio enhancement. Therefore, the purpose is to control SLL concomitantly with reducing the interference of undesired signals impinging on the array. The signal reception is based herein on a complex baseband snapshot vector model, passing through a typical receiver architecture. After a comprehensive overview of the signal model, the text delves into linearly constrained adaptive filters, setting the groundwork for detailing how to apply the null placement sidelobe suppression technique (NP-SLS) to constrained versions of adaptive filtering algorithms. The main idea behind the NP-SLS algorithm is the addition of linear constraints to place nulls on the sidelobe peaks above a specified minimum level. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in controlling SLL and its effect on adaptive interference suppression for different numbers of antennas. The study summarizes the findings, which may help future research in adaptive beamforming with enhanced sidelobe control.

This paper presents a modified Vivaldi antipodal antenna using air-filled RSIW technology for UWB applications. The structure has a triangular slot edge, extending the bandwidth and increasing the gain. A prototype of the modified antenna was simulated and fabricated. The measured results show reasonable agreement with simulations, validating the design procedure. The proposed antenna offers a low-cost, easy-to-manufacture and compact solution. Additionally, improvements in performance were observed, including a 1 GHz increase in bandwidth and an additional 1.58 dB in gain, compared to the antenna using only the RSIW technology.

The design of electrical wheelchair controllers remains a challenge for the scientific community. In recent years, Polymer Optical Fiber (POF)-based sensors have been used for biomedical applications, however, the application of these types of sensors for the control of assistive devices has been little explored. For this reason, this work proposes the design and validation of a fuzzy logic controller that uses information from an array of POF-based sensors located in a pillow, which is used for wheelchair control in four directions (right, left, forward and stop) by using neck movements. The results allow concluding that the system is fast, accurate, and reliable. This work presents a contribution related to the design of assistive devices based on optical fiber sensors and focuses on people with upper- and lower-limb mobility restrictions. Future studies will address the evaluation of the system for people with disabilities.

This paper presents a radiopropagation algorithm based on a Ray Tracing (RT) technique that combines a modified multipath model for constant refractivity gradient profiles and the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD). A novel formulation is proposed by the authors for calculation and ground-reflection analysis of ray paths depending on atmospheric refractivity. The algorithm introduced herein was evaluated in a mixed scenario and in two more realistic case studies, under conditions of constant refractivity gradient and lossy terrain profiles. Pathloss results are obtained and compared with Parabolic Equation (PE) numerical solution results at 2.0 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 5.4 GHz. In such conditions, the modified radiopropagation multipath algorithm with atmospheric refractivity introduced herein showed satisfactory results. © 2023 SBMO/SBMag.

Monitoring the vibration of industrial engines is essential for running diagnostics that can detect faults and point out the feasibility of predictive maintenance. Therefore, this paper describes an optical accelerometer based on a fiber Bragg grating to monitor the vibration of the gearbox of an industrial engine prototype. Experimental tests were performed varying the motor's rotation speed during normal operation. To validate the proposed system, two electronic accelerometers were attached to the motor's gearbox and bearing. The natural frequency response of the optical accelerometer was simulated and good agreement with the experimental results was obtained (0.83% of error). The proposed sensor was able to correctly identify the operation speeds of 20, 25, 35, 40, 45 and 50 rps with a maximum error of 0.05%. The mean signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the optical accelerometer was 64.05% higher than the SNR of one of the electronic solutions. The experimental results show that the vibration signals have different characteristics when measured at the bearings and at the gearbox, indicating the feasibility of multi-signals analysis for fault detection. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
