Existing genetic programming (GP) methods are typically designed based on a certain representation, such as tree-based or linear representations. These representations show various pros and cons in different domains. However, due to the complicated relationships among representation and fitness landscapes of GP, it is hard to intuitively determine which GP representation is the most suitable for solving a certain problem. Evolving programs (or models) with multiple representations simultaneously can alternatively search on different fitness landscapes since representations are highly related to the search space that essentially defines the fitness landscape. Fully using the latent synergies among different GP individual representations might be helpful for GP to search for better solutions. However, existing GP literature rarely investigates the simultaneous effective use of evolving multiple representations. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a multi-representation GP algorithm based on tree-based and linear representations, which are two commonly used GP representations. In addition, we develop a new cross-representation crossover operator to harness the interplay between tree-based and linear representations. Empirical results show that navigating the learned knowledge between basic tree-based and linear representations successfully improves the effectiveness of GP with solely tree-based or linear representation in solving symbolic regression and dynamic job shop scheduling problems. © 2024, CC BY.

Recent work shows promising results in expanding the capabilities of large language models (LLM) to directly understand and synthesize speech. However, an LLM-based strategy for modeling spoken dialogs remains elusive, calling for further investigation. This paper introduces an extensive speech-text LLM framework, the Unified Spoken Dialog Model (USDM), designed to generate coherent spoken responses with naturally occurring prosodic features relevant to the given input speech without relying on explicit automatic speech recognition (ASR) or text-to-speech (TTS) systems. We have verified the inclusion of prosody in speech tokens that predominantly contain semantic information and have used this foundation to construct a prosody-infused speech-text model. Additionally, we propose a generalized speech-text pretraining scheme that enhances the capture of cross-modal semantics. To construct USDM, we fine-tune our speech-text model on spoken dialog data using a multi-step spoken dialog template that stimulates the chain-of-reasoning capabilities exhibited by the underlying LLM. Automatic and human evaluations on the DailyTalk dataset demonstrate that our approach effectively generates natural-sounding spoken responses, surpassing previous and cascaded baselines. Bladder cancer is one of the most common human malignancies worldwide. Aberrant activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is crucial to driving malignant progression and predicting poor prognosis of multiple human cancers, including bladder cancer, making STAT3 a promising target of cancer therapeutics. Cryptotanshinone (CTS) is an anticancer ingredient of Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), a top-graded Chinese medicinal herb. However, whether CTS targets STAT3 to exert its cytotoxic effect on human bladder cancer remains unknown. Herein, we demonstrated that CTS is cytotoxic to multiple human urinary bladder transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) cell lines while sparing normal human urothelial cells. CTS provoked apoptosis-dependent bladder TCC cytotoxicity, as apoptosis blockage by z-VAD-fmk markedly rescued the clonogenicity of CTS-treated cells. Besides, CTS was found to suppress constitutive and interleukin 6-inducible activation of STAT3, evidenced by the downregulation of STAT3 tyrosine 705 phosphorylation and BCL2, a recognized STAT3 transcriptional target. Notably, ectopic expression of a dominant-active STAT3 mutant (STAT3-C) or BCL-2 alleviated CTS-induced apoptosis and clonogenicity inhibition, thus confirming STAT3 blockade as a pivotal mechanism of CTS's cytotoxic action on bladder TCC cells. Lastly, immunoblotting revealed that CTS lowered the levels of active JAK2, an upstream kinase that mediates STAT3 tyrosine 705 phosphorylation. Altogether, we conclude that the blockade of the JAK2/STAT3/BCL-2 antiapoptotic signaling axis is a vital mechanism whereby CTS provokes bladder cancer cytotoxicity. The current evidence implicates CTS's potential to be translated into a bladder cancer therapeutic agent. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Deep learning (DL) enables the development of computer models that are capable of learning, visualizing, optimizing, refining, and predicting data. In recent years, DL has been applied in a range of fields, including audio-visual data processing, agriculture, transportation prediction, natural language, biomedicine, disaster management, bioinformatics, drug design, genomics, face recognition, and ecology. To explore the current state of deep learning, it is necessary to investigate the latest developments and applications of deep learning in these disciplines. However, the literature is lacking in exploring the applications of deep learning in all potential sectors. This paper thus extensively investigates the potential applications of deep learning across all major fields of study as well as the associated benefits and challenges. As evidenced in the literature, DL exhibits accuracy in prediction and analysis, makes it a powerful computational tool, and has the ability to articulate itself and optimize, making it effective in processing data with no prior training. Given its independence from training data, deep learning necessitates massive amounts of data for effective analysis and processing, much like data volume. 1. Calibration is a crucial step for the validation of computational models and a challenging task to accomplish. 2. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory has experienced an exponential rise in the number of published papers, which in large part has been made possible by the DEBtool toolbox. Multimodal evolutionary optimisation could provide DEBtool with new capabilities, particularly relevant on the provisioning of equally optimal and diverse solutions. 3. In this paper we present MultiCalib4DEB, a MATLAB toolbox directly integrated into the existing DEBtool toolbox, which uses multimodal evolutionary optimisation algorithms to find multiple global and local optimal and diverse calibration solutions for DEB models. 4. MultiCalib4DEB adds powerful calibration mechanisms, statistical analysis, and visualisation methods to the DEBtool toolbox and provides a wide range of outputs, different calibration alternatives, and specific tools to strengthen the DEBtool calibration module and to aid DEBtool users to evaluate the performance of the calibration results. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

The learning and recognition of object features from unregulated input has been a longstanding challenge for artificial intelligence systems. Brains are adept at learning stable representations given small samples of noisy observations;across sensory modalities, this capacity is aided by a cascade of signal conditioning steps informed by domain knowledge. The olfactory system, in particular, solves a source separation and denoising problem compounded by concentration variability, environmental interference, and unpredictably correlated sensor affinities. To function optimally, its plastic network requires statistically well-behaved input. We present a data-blind neuromorphic signal conditioning strategy whereby analog data are normalized and quantized into spike phase representations. Input is delivered to a column of duplicated spiking principal neurons via heterogeneous synaptic weights;this regularizes layer utilization, yoking total activity to the network’s operating range and rendering internal representations robust to uncontrolled open-set stimulus variance. We extend this mechanism by adding a data-aware calibration step whereby the range and density of the quantization weights adapt to accumulated input statistics, optimizing resource utilization by balancing activity regularization and information retention. Towards Robust Natural-Looking Mammography Lesion Synthesis on Ipsilateral Dual-Views Breast Cancer Analysis

In recent years, many mammographic image analysis methods have been introduced for improving cancer classification tasks. Two major issues of mammogram classification tasks are leveraging multi-view mammographic information and class-imbalance handling. In the first problem, many multi-view methods have been released for concatenating features of two or more views for the training and inference stage. Having said that, most multi-view existing methods are not explainable in the meaning of feature fusion, and treat many views equally for diagnosing. Our work aims to propose a simple but novel method for enhancing examined view (main view) by leveraging low-level feature information from the auxiliary view (ipsilateral view) before learning the high-level feature that contains the cancerous features. For the second issue, we also propose a simple but novel malignant mammogram synthesis framework for upsampling minor class samples. Our easy-to-implement and no-training framework has eliminated the current limitation of the CutMix algorithm which are unreliable synthesized images with random pasted patches, hard-contour problems, and domain shift problems. Our results on VinDr-Mammo and CMMD datasets show the effectiveness of our two new frameworks for both multi-view training and synthesizing mammographic images, outperforming the previous conventional methods in our experimental settings. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Predicting future glycemic events such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and normal for type 1 diabetes (T1D) remains a significant and challenging issue. In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based model is proposed to predict the future glycemic events of T1D patients. We utilized five T1D patient datasets to build the models and predict future glycemic events with a prediction horizon (PH) of 30 and 60 minutes ahead of time. We applied the data preprocessing method based on the sliding window approach by sliding the blood glucose time-series data from the past 60 minutes (the last 12 data points) as input and using the next 30 and 60 minutes (the next 6 and 12-th data points) as output. All the numeric blood glucose output data are then transformed into a multi-class classification label, such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and normal. Our proposed model is then used to learn and create the prediction model from the preprocessed blood glucose dataset. Four performance metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and f-1 score were utilized to measure the performance of the classification models used in this study, such as Naïve Bayes (NB), Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN). The results showed that our proposed ANN-based model performed better at predicting future glycemic events than other models, with an average accuracy, precision, recall, and f-1 score of 88.649%, 76.661%, 71.731%, 72.609%, and 83.364%, 60.437%, 61.345%, 60.62% for the PH of 30 and 60 minutes, respectively. As a result, knowing this future glycemic event sooner can help patients avoid potentially dangerous conditions and can eventually be used to improve diabetes management. © 2022 IEEE.

The development of artificial intelligence(AI) and the mining of biomedical data complement each other. From the direct use of computer vision results to analyze medical images for disease screening, to now integrating biological knowledge into models and even accelerating the development of new AI based on biological discoveries, the boundaries of both are constantly expanding, and their connections are becoming closer.
