Network topology planning is an essential multi-phase process to build and jointly optimize the multi-layer network topologies in wide-area networks (WANs). Most existing practices target single-phase/layer planning, and are incapable of satisfying all rigorous topological structure constraints (e.g., dual-homing rings) defined by network standards and operators, especially in large-scale networks. These significantly limit their usability and performance in production networks. We consider a general topology planning problem with typical structure constraints over three essential phases (greenfield, reconfiguration, and site expansion) and topological layers (optical, IP, and routing topologies). We present, T3Planner, a novel practical solver to this problem in production. Specifically, we develop a structure-driven encoder based on graph neural network (GNN) for concise structure encoding, and design a new learning framework with optical-centric layer compression/reconstruction and rule-aided reinforcement learning (RL) for fast convergence and high performance. Extensive experiments on nine real topologies demonstrate that T3Planner scales to large optical networks with hundreds of sites, saves 46.6% cost, and supports 3.12x more demand when compared to related existing approaches. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Effi-CNN: real-time vision-based system for interpretation of sign language using CNN and transfer learning

The deaf and mute population has difficulty conveying their thoughts and ideas to others. Sign language is their most expressive mode of communication, but the general public is callow of sign language;therefore, the mute and deaf have difficulty communicating with others. A system that can correctly translate sign language motions to speech and vice versa in real time is required to overcome this communication barrier. Effi-CNN, a vision-based Sign Language Recognition (SLR) system employing transfer learning with EfficientNetB2, is proposed in this paper. We have also developed a system covering sign gestures to text in real time. Our approach was evaluated on eight publicly available datasets, including the Massey University gesture dataset, the ArSL2018 dataset, the MNIST-ASL dataset, and others. When comparing our results to state-of-the-art algorithms, the experimental findings showed that our proposed work is more successful than existing models. Our proposed model delivered an accuracy of 99.90 on MNIST dataset. The results show that our Effi-CNN surpasses most currently existing solutions and can categorize many gestures with a low error rate. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

OSE: On-Site State of Health Estimation for Li-ion Battery using Real-Time Field data

On-site lithium-ion battery state of health (SoH) estimation is of crucial importance for reliable operations of electric vehicles (EVs). Yet, due to the low-quality of unlabeled real-time field data, diverse operating environments of in-service EVs, and limited computational capability of onboard devices, existing techniques established on data from well-controlled experimental environments are not practical for real world EVs' SoH estimation. Accurate and rapid SoH estimation based on field data of in-service EVs still remains quite challenging. To tackle this challenge, we present an on-site SoH estimation (OSE) method using in-service EV field data through a new knowledge embedded deep transfer learning (DTL) model. Initially, an universal data preprocessing approach integrating mechanism knowledge is designed to process low-quality data under diverse operating environments. Then, we develop a domain adaptive hybrid deep neural network (DAHDNN) model suitable for unlabeled field data, which can be deployed via edge cloud collaborative framework to meet actual computational capability. We demonstrate the superiority of our method across four real datasets, where, OSE's estimation error is decreased by up to 78.5% compared with the state-of-the-art methods. The results indicate that the proposed method has good generalizability and reliability for SoH estimation on real-time field data. © 2015 IEEE.

Amidst global population growth and escalating food demands, real-time agricultural monitoring is crucial for ensuring food security. During the initial stages of crop growth, however, it faces significant challenges in obtaining accurate ground truth data via remote sensing, thereby impeding effective crop classification. Traditional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models, although effective in image processing and feature extraction within computer vision, are notably limited in their ability to handle the high dimensionality and complex spectral information inherent in hyperspectral non-image remote sensing data. To address this problem, we designed an enhanced CNN model, CBM-CNN. The CBM-CNN incorporates additional convolutional layers (C), batch normalization (B), and MLP(M) to convert one-dimensional data into two-dimensional data for classification, thus improving the processing efficiency of highly nonlinear data features. Building on CBM-CNN, we add multiple attention mechanisms (CBMM-CNN) to enhance feature extraction capabilities. The Siamese CBMM-CNN (SCBMM-CNN) is employed for in-depth learning of data features, with supervised learning precisely adjusting the model to improve classification performance. Experimental results on hyperspectral remote sensing datasets demonstrate that SCBMM-CNN outperforms traditional machine learning models (PCA-RF, GBDT, GMO-SVM, Random Forest, Decision Tree) and deep learning models (CNN, CNN-LSTM) in terms of accuracy, recall rate, F1 score, and kappa coefficient. These results confirm that SCBMM-CNN significantly improves crop classification accuracy and provides a novel method for early crop growth classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder symptoms of which includes repetitive behaviour and lack of social and communication skills. Even though these symptoms can be seen very clearly in social but a large number of individuals with ASD remains undiagnosed. In this paper, we worked on a methodology for detection of ASD from 3-dimensional walking video dataset, utilizing supervised machine learning (ML) classification algorithms and using nature-inspired optimization algorithms for feature extraction from dataset. The proposed methodology involve the classification of ASD using supervised ML classification algorithm and extracting important and relevant features from the dataset using nature-inspired optimization algorithms. We also included the ranking coefficients for finding the initial leading particle. This selection of particle significantly reduces the computation time and hence, improving the total efficiency and accuracy for the ASD detection. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed methodology, we deployed various combination of classification algorithm and nature-inspired algorithms resulting in an outstanding classification accuracy of 100% using random forest classification algorithm and gravitational search algorithm for feature selection. The application of the proposed methodology with different datasets would enhance the robustness and generalizability of the proposed methodology. Due to high accuracy and less total computation time, the proposed methodology will offer a significant contribution to the medical and academia fields, providing a foundation for future research and advancements in ASD diagnosis. Incentive Mechanism Design for Federated Learning With Dynamic Network Pricing

Federated learning protects users' data privacy by sharing users' local model parameters (instead of raw data) with a server. However, when massive users train a large machine learning model through federated learning, the dynamically varying and often heavy communication overhead can put significant pressure on the network operator. The operator may choose to dynamically change the network prices in response, which will eventually affect the payoffs of the server and users. This paper considers the under-explored yet important issue of the joint design of participation incentives (for encouraging users' contribution to federated learning) and network pricing (for managing network resources). Due to heterogeneous users' private information and multi-dimensional decisions, the optimization problems in Stage I of multi-stage games are non-convex. Nevertheless, we are able to analytically derive the corresponding optimal contract and pricing mechanism through proper transformations of constraints, variables, and functions, under three interaction structures of the participants. We show that the coordinated structure is better than the two uncoordinated structures, as it avoids the selfish behaviors of the network operator and the server;the vertically uncoordinated structure is better than the horizontally uncoordinated structure, as it avoids the interests misalignment between the server and the network operator. We also propose multi-period network pricing to reduce the implementation complexity of dynamic pricing. Numerical results based on real-world datasets show that our proposed mechanisms decrease the server's cost by up to 24.87% and increase the network operator's profit by up to 1245.25%, compared with the state-of-the-art benchmarks. © 2025 IEEE. Plesiomonas shigelloides (P. shigelloides) is a gram-negative, thermotolerant, motile, and pleomorphic microorganism that acts as an opportunistic pathogen, capable of causing abscesses, enteric infections, and even sepsis in humans and other animals, thereby posing a threat to human and animal health worldwide. The crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) is a globally endangered avian species with a limited population and is vulnerable for various infections. To gain a better understanding of the prevalence of P. shigelloides in the endangered crested ibis, fecal samples from the crested ibis at the Xiazhu Lake Crested Ibis Breeding Research Center, China were collected and analyzed. The results confirmed that 45.6% (36/79) of the fecal samples tested positive for P. shigelloides. Antibiotic susceptibility testing showed that 27.8% (10/36) of P. shigelloides isolates were multidrug-resistant, with resistance to ampicillin and amikacin being 100% and 77.8%, respectively. Subsequently, ten representative isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing, and resistance and virulence genes were analyzed. The evolutionary tree of the genomes show that these strains have different origins, with one strain closely related to a strain from human. Finally, the pathogenicity experiment demonstrated that several strains exhibit pathogenicity in both mice and waterfowl, with two strains displaying lethal pathogenicity in mice. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of multidrug-resistant and pathogenic P. shigelloides isolated from the crested ibis, suggesting a potential threat to this endangered species and broader public health implications. © The Author(s) 2025.

Collaborative local–global context modeling for session-based recommendation

Session-based recommendation systems (SBRSs) predict the next item in a session by analyzing user interactions. While current methods emphasize sequential item relationships, they often overlook temporal information that highlights subtle shifts in user preferences. This gap can limit their ability to adapt to dynamic user behavior, and recent advances have yet to effectively integrate both sequential and non-sequential item transitions, which may lead to biased modeling. To address these limitations, this paper introduces Coase, a novel SBRS model that unifies local and global context modeling to capture fine-grained dynamic user preferences. Coase transforms session sequences into session star graphs, employing a Bi-Gated Graph Self-Attention Network for local context modeling, and introduces SudokuFormer to model time-aware sequential transitions within a global session context through disentangled attention and stable feature fusion. A triple attention mechanism is then utilized to fully integrate local and global contextual features. Comprehensive experiments conducted on four publicly available datasets demonstrate that Coase improves Recall by 1.71%–1.83%, Mean Reciprocal Rank (MRR) by 2.73%–2.80%, and Normalized Discounted Cumulative Gain (NDCG) by 2.32%–2.43% across the top 5, 10, 15, and 20 items. Ablation studies validate the framework and components of Coase, while additional analyses examine the effect of session length, and visualization studies illustrate diverse attention patterns. This research contributes a novel approach to SBRS, offering promising advancements in recommendation accuracy and user experience. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Knowledge Graph (KG) reasoning aims to predict missing entities in incomplete triples, which requires adequate structural information to derive accurate embeddings. However, KGs in the real world are not as dense as the idealized benchmarks, where sparse graph structures restrict the comprehensive structural information for superior performance. Although the logical semantics in KGs shows its potential in alleviating the impact of structural sparsity, there still exist some challenges. The deficient supervision and the semantic gap of logic make it difficult to introduce logical semantics in sparse KG reasoning. To this end, we propose a novel KG reasoning approach LoLLM injecting logic with the supervised information supplied by the Large Language Model (LLM), which is proved to be effective in evaluating and scoring. Firstly, LoLLM derives structural embeddings employing a graph convolutional network (GCN) with relation-aware and triple-aware attention. LoLLM secondly constructs reasoning paths instantiated from the first-order logic rules extracted from sparse KGs, and injects the logical semantics by a designed LLM-enhanced tuning strategy. We propose a textual loss (TL) and a logical loss (LL) in the optimization and obtain logical tuning embeddings of KG in this process. Finally, LoLLM fuses structural embeddings from the GCN and logical tuning embeddings from the LLM-enhanced tuning for scoring and incomplete triple prediction. Extensive experiments on two sparse KGs and a benchmark show that LoLLM outperforms state-of-the-art structure-based and Language Model (LM)-augmented baselines. Moreover, the logic rules with corresponding confidences provide explicit explanations as an interpretable paradigm. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
