Sign-Perturbed Sums (SPS) is a non-asymptotic system identification method that can construct confidence regions for general linear systems. It works under mild statistical assumptions, such as symmetric and independent noise terms. The SPS confidence region includes the prediction error estimate (PEM) and, for any finite sample and user-chosen confidence probability, it contains the true system parameter with exactly the given probability. Originally, SPS was introduced for open-loop systems, this paper overviews its applicability in closed-loop setups. The three main PEM approaches of closed-loop identification are addressed: direct, indirect and joint input-output, and it is discussed whether SPS can be applied to construct guaranteed finite sample confidence regions around these PEM estimates. Some parametrization issues are also highlighted and, finally, two numerical experiments are presented demonstrating SPS for closed-loop systems.

This work proposes a policy iteration procedure for the synthesis of optimal and globally stabilizing control policies for Linear Time Invariant (LTI) Asymptotically Null-controllable with Bounded Inputs (ANCBI) systems. This class includes systems with eigenvalues on the imaginary axis (possibly repeated) but no pole with positive real part. The proposed policy iteration relies on a class of piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions which is non-differentiable, but continuous, and polynomial in both the state and the deadzone functions of the input signals. The second step of the policy iteration is based on a piecewise control policy improvement. An important aspect of the proposed piecewise policy is that at each step of the iteration the computed policy is globally stabilizing and the existence of an improving value function is guaranteed as well. The solution to the inequalities which is required to hold at each step of the policy iteration, is obtained by solving Sum-of-Squares Programs (SOSP) that can be efficiently implemented with semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers.

We propose a generalization of the recently developed system identification method called Sign-Perturbed Sums (SPS). The proposed construction is based on the instrumental variables estimate and, unlike the original SPS, it can construct non-asymptotic confidence regions for linear regression models where the regressors contain past values of the output. Hence, it is applicable to ARX systems, as well as systems with feedback. We show that this approach provides regions with exact confidence under weak assumptions, i.e., the true parameter is included in the regions with a (user-chosen) exact probability for any finite sample. The paper also proves the strong consistency of the method and proposes a computationally efficient generalization of the previously proposed ellipsoidal outer-approximation. Finally, the new method is demonstrated through numerical experiments, using both real-world and simulated data.

Nowadays single-phase axial flux induction motors are widely used in home applications. This increasing usage is because of their distinct advantages over conventional induction motors. Some of these advantages are their planar and adjustable air gap, better power to weight and diameter to length ratio, compact construction, better efficiency, high utilisation of the active materials and thus a favourable power density. This paper deals with analysis and experiment of a single-phase capacitor-run axial flux induction motor (AFIM). The mathematical model of studied motor in transient and steady-state is investigated based on d-q axis theory. In particular, the proposed model takes into account the effect of core saturation, supply voltage and eccentricity. An experimental test setup is built to calculate core B-H curve. Also, a new definition for static eccentricity in direct drive systems is presented and its definition in shaft-coupled axial flux machines is improved. Finally, the studied AFIM is fabricated and tested. The simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data obtained from the prototype motor. © Institution of Engineers Australia, 2014.

A novel bioinspired control strategy design is proposed for generalized synchronization of nonlinear chaotic systems, combining the bioinspired stability theory, fuzzy modeling, and a novel, simple-form Lyapunov control function design of derived high efficient, heuristic and bioinspired controllers. Three main contributions are concluded: (1) apply the bioinspired stability theory to further analyze the stability of fuzzy error systems;the high performance of controllers has been shown in previous study by Li and Ge 2009, (2) a new Lyapunov control function based on bioinspired stability theory is designed to achieve synchronization without using traditional LMI method, which is a simple linear homogeneous function of states and the process of designing controller to synchronize two fuzzy chaotic systems becomes much simpler, and (3) three different situations of synchronization are proposed;classical master and slave Lorenz systems, slave Chen's system, and Rossler's system as functional system are illustrated to further show the effectiveness and feasibility of our novel strategy. The security of source has become an increasingly important issue in quantum cryptography. Based on the framework of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD), the source becomes the only region exploitable by a potential eavesdropper (Eve). Phase randomization is a cornerstone assumption in most discrete-variable (DV) quantum communication protocols (e.g., QKD, quantum coin tossing, weak-coherent-state blind quantum computing, and so on), and the violation of such an assumption is thus fatal to the security of those protocols. In this paper, we show a simple quantum hacking strategy, with commercial and homemade pulsed lasers, by Eve that allows her to actively tamper with the source and violate such an assumption, without leaving a trace afterwards. Furthermore, our attack may also be valid for continuous-variable (CV) QKD, which is another main class of QKD protocol, since, excepting the phase random assumption, other parameters (e.g., intensity) could also be changed, which directly determine the security of CV-QKD.

The Z-source neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters can realize buck-boost energy conversion with all satisfying advantages of the three-level inverters. A significant problem related to this topology is the fluctuation of the neutral-point potential (NP). However, the previous modulation techniques for this topology cannot achieve the considerate stable voltage. In this paper, based on the analysis of the relationship among the shoot-through duty cycle and the NP voltage, the average NP current, switching frequency capacitor value, a new feed-forward compensator by modifying the shoot-through duty cycle which can improve to balance the NP voltage balancing is proposed. Meanwhile, in consideration of a low voltage gain caused by the NP voltage balance method, a new control method based on a maximum constant boost control method is proposed, which brings the benefits in both high voltage gain and low-frequency ripple. The considerate stable NP voltage and the high voltage gain have been proven in simulation and through experimental results from a prototype converter. © 2014 IEEE.

Topological quantum computing promises error-resistant quantum computation without active error correction. However, there is a worry that during the process of executing quantum gates by braiding anyons around each other, extra anyonic excitations will be created that will disorder the encoded quantum information. Here, we explore this question in detail by studying adiabatic code deformations on Hamiltonians based on topological codes, notably Kitaev's surface codes and the more recently discovered color codes. We develop protocols that enable universal quantum computing by adiabatic evolution in a way that keeps the energy gap of the system constant with respect to the computation size and introduces only simple local Hamiltonian interactions. This allows one to perform holonomic quantum computing with these topological quantum computing systems. The tools we develop allow one to go beyond numerical simulations and understand these processes analytically.

Human flesh search(HFS), a Web-enabled crowdsourcing phenomenon, originated in China a decade ago. In this article, we present the first comprehensive empirical analysis of HFS, focusing on the scope of HFS activities, the patterns of HFS crowd collaboration process, and the characteristics of HFS participant networks. A survey of HFS participants was conducted to provide an in-depth understanding of the HFS community and various factors that motivate these participants to contribute. This article also advocates a new stream of Web science and social computing research that will be important in predicting the future growth and use of the World Wide Web.

A Dubins vehicle circumnavigation controller is derived based on an analysis of state space dynamics resulting from a state transformation. The controller is designed and analyzed in the state space with two continuous and one discrete variables. We showed that the property of our control strategy can be studied based on 2D phase portraits, including the case when the vehicle turning rate is bounded. As a part of our analysis, we found conditions that need to be satisfied for the controller to work and that can be used for gain scheduling and application of the control to a larger range bound. The results are illustrated by 2D phase portraits and simulations describing the control implementation, which is based only on range measurements. © 2014 American Automatic control Council.
