Shape descriptors have been used frequently as features to characterize an image for classification and image retrieval tasks. The problem of recognizing classes of objects in images is important for annotation and indexing of Satellite image databases. In this paper, a comparison between shape and texture features for classification is presented. The classification is based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) learning. SVM classifier can be learned from training data of relevance images and irrelevance images marked by users. Using the classifier, the system can retrieve more images relevant to the query in the database efficiently. The goal is to build an accurate and fast query-by-example using content based image retrieval based on the information extracted from satellite image data. We have investigated and described various feature extraction methods relevant to our work in this paper. The experimental results demonstrate that using the shape features give a better classification accuracy than that of the texture features. © 2011 IEEE.

A water level control system for a nuclear steam generator (SG) is proposed. A method to improve the performance of nuclear steam generator in nuclear power station is introduced. Combination of genetic algorithm (GA) technique and fuzzy logic control is carried out. The optimal parameters of fuzzy logic controller are achieved. These parameters include;the membership functions of water level error and changes water level error, the rule base, and the input scaling gains. Steam generator model is implemented using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The optimal controller was applied to control the water level of nuclear SG and it's compared with conventional controller. Simulation results indicate that the optimal fuzzy controller greatly improves the performance of nuclear SG. Moreover the proposed controller is robust to any disturbance related to sudden changes in steam flow rate and water level. In this study, intelligent control of human eye movements system for the emotional support by a huggable pet type robot via Gaussian RBF neural network based on sliding mode control is presented. Despite active research and significant progress in the last three decades on control of human eye movements, it remains challenging issue due to its applications in prosthetic eyes and robotics. The geometry and model of human eye movements system are investigated and this system is considered as a nonlinear control system. The specified model may only be an academic exercise. It can have scientific importance in understanding of the human movement system in general. Also, it can be useful for robotics. By using Gaussian RBF Neural Networks Based on Sliding Mode control, the control goal can be achieved. The adaptation laws of designed controllers are obtained based on sliding mode control methodology without calculating the Jacobian of the system. The proposed method is capable to control of human eye movements system. Intelligent methods such as artificial neural networks are proposed to control the human eye movements and numerical simulations are presented. It is concluded that the intelligent controls applied to control of human eye movements system are emulated from the neural controls in biological system. © 2011 IEEE.

This study is an attempt to take advantage of a cerebellar model to control a biomimetic arm. The cerebellar controller is a modified MOSAIC model which adaptively controls the arm. We call this model ORF-MOSAIC (Organized by Receptive Fields MOdular Selection And Identification for control). The arm features a musculoskeletal model which is controlled through muscle activations by means of optimization techniques. With as few as 16 modules, we were able to control the arm in a workspace of 30 x 30 cm. The system was able to adapt to an external field as well as handling new objects despite delays. The discussion section suggests that there are similarities between the microzones in the cerebellum and the modules of this new model. © 2011 IEEE.

Data mining is a valuable tool in meteorological applications. Properly selected data mining techniques enable researchers to process and analyze massive amounts of data collected by satellites and other instruments. Large spatial-temporal datasets can be analyzed using different linear and nonlinear methods. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a promising tool for clustering and visualizing high dimensional data and mapping spatial-temporal datasets describing nonlinear phenomena. We present results of the application of the SOM technique in regions of interest within the European re-analysis data set. The possibility of detecting climate change signals through the visualization capability of SOM tools is examined.

Human life is divided into day periods as a main periods which consist of a day and night phase. Most of humans need to sleep a eight hours in a minimum to have their body and all the body function ready in day phase of a day. The second very important thing (instead of 8 hour sleep) is a phase of sleep in which a human is wake up. Waking up of a human in deep sleep phase lead to a very “unhappy” morning and not so nice spend of day. We are trying to develop algorithms to detect mild sleep stages which are the most suitable to human wake up. Actually we use microphone input to record and process sound near the monitored user. All the knowledge is implemented to mobile phone (windows mobile based device) as an intelligent alarm application. Whole application is designed as multithread Real-Time application based on. NET Compact Framework platform in C# language. Filtration and detection algorithms used special Math library Math. NET to process a recorded sound signal. This paper consists of several chapters which describes design, implementation and testing phases of this mobile application development. Actual testing results shows that our developed application detect correctly more than 70% of mild sleep stages of all tested persons.

This paper demonstrates the use of the Locality Sensitive Hashing technique operating in Euclidean metric space to build a data structure for Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite imagery database. Due to the high dimensionality of these images, their texture feature vectors are used. These features are extracted using pyramidal wavelet decomposition coupled with Gaussian central moments. Families of hash functions are drawn randomly and independently from a Gaussian distribution to create hash tables for these texture feature vectors of the images. The hash tables and the families of hash functions are then used to find similar satellite image matches to any query image in sublinear search time. When tested, our algorithm has proven to be about thirty three times faster than the linear search algorithm. In addition, our algorithm searches less than two percent of the entire database on the average to find the possible similar image matches to any given query without loss of accuracy.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a devastating disease. In this paper, we propose a novel method for scoring of air trapping in the lungs for detection and evaluation of COPD. The proposed method finds volumetric changes of the lungs from inspiration to expiration. To this end, trachea CT images at full inspiration and expiration are compared. For this comparison, the lungs parenchyma in the inspiration and expiration images are found and changes in the surface and volume of the lungs between inspiration and expiration are used to define quantitative measures (features). Using these features, the subjects are classified into two groups of normal class and COPD patients using a Bayesian classifier. In addition, t-tests are applied to evaluate discrimination powers of the features for this classification. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ability to estimate air trapping in the lungs from CT images without human intervention. The proposed method may assists radiologists in the detection of COPD as a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system. It may also assist them with the scoring of the disease (severity of air trapping in the lungs). © 2011 IEEE.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of lung diseases that block airflow and cause a huge degree of human suffering. While there is no cure for COPD and the lung damage that results in this disease cannot be reversed, it is very important to diagnose it as early as possible. Additional to diagnosis, using a mathematical model to estimate severity of disease would be helpful for evaluation of treatment effects. This paper presents a new method for identifying COPD from three-dimensional (3-D) pulmonary X-ray CT images. The method has five main steps. First, corresponding positions of lungs in inspiration and expiration are found based on anatomical structures. Then, lung regions are segmented from the CT images by active contours. Next, the left and right lungs are separated using a sequence of morphological operations. Then, parenchyma variations in each lung are found as a relationship between inspiratory and expiratory states. Finally, a classifier is used to decide about the disease and its severity. A t-test is done to evaluate the results. Twelve patients with variable severity of COPD and twelve normal adults were included in this study. The proposed method may assist radiologists in the detection of COPD as a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system. © 2011 IEEE.
