Streaming graph processing needs to timely evaluate continuous queries. Prior systems suffer from massive redundant computations due to the irregular order of processing vertices influenced by updates. To address this issue, we propose ACGraph, a novel streaming graph processing approach for monotonic graph algorithms. It maintains dependence trees during runtime, and makes affected vertices processed in a top-to-bottom order in the hierarchy of the dependence trees, thus normalizing the state propagation order and coalescing of multiple propagation to the same vertices. Experimental results show that ACGraph reduces the number of updates by 50% on average, and achieves the speedup of 1.75~7.43× over state-of-the-art systems.

Can Perturbations Help Reduce Investment Risks? Risk-Aware Stock Recommendation via Split Variational Adversarial Training

In the stock market, a successful investment requires a good balance between profits and risks. Based on the learning to rank paradigm, stock recommendation has been widely studied in quantitative finance to recommend stocks with higher return ratios for investors. Despite the efforts to make profits, many existing recommendation approaches still have some limitations in risk control, which may lead to intolerable paper losses in practical stock investing. To effectively reduce risks, we draw inspiration from adversarial learning and propose a novel Split Variational Adversarial Training (SVAT) method for risk-aware stock recommendation. Essentially, SVAT encourages the stock model to be sensitive to adversarial perturbations of risky stock examples and enhances the model’s risk awareness by learning from perturbations. To generate representative adversarial examples as risk indicators, we devise a variational perturbation generator to model diverse risk factors. Particularly, the variational architecture enables our method to provide a rough risk quantification for investors, showing an additional advantage of interpretability. Experiments on several real-world stock market datasets demonstrate the superiority of our SVAT method. By lowering the volatility of the stock recommendation model, SVAT effectively reduces investment risks and outperforms state-of-the-art baselines by more than 30% in terms of risk-adjusted profits. Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) networks have gained widespread popularity due to their convenience, automation, and security provisions in personal and home environments. Ubiquitous resource-constrained devices, however, are plagued with security issues that often arise from firmware-related issues and their propagated effects. While various studies on firmware attestation are available, they require firmware copies, specific hardware, and complex computation on the IoT device. This paper presents a study on the application of Graph Transformer Networks (GTN) in verifying the firmware integrity of consumer IoT swarms using SRAM as an attestation feature. The proposed method achieves an overall 0.99 accuracy on authentic samples from development and physical twin networks, 0.99 on malware, and 0.97 on propagated misbehavior at a $\sim 10^{-4}$ second inference latency on a laptop CPU.

Relighting an outdoor scene is challenging due to the diverse illuminations and salient cast shadows. Intrinsic image decomposition on outdoor photo collections could partly solve this problem by weakly supervised labels with albedo and normal consistency from multiview stereo. With neural radiance fields (NeRF), editing the appearance code could produce more realistic results without interpreting the outdoor scene image formation explicitly. This paper proposes to complement the intrinsic estimation from volume rendering using NeRF and from inversing the photometric image formation model using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The former produces richer and more reliable pseudo labels (cast shadows and sky appearances in addition to albedo and normal) for training the latter to predict interpretable and editable lighting parameters via a single-image prediction pipeline. We demonstrate the advantages of our method for both intrinsic image decomposition and relighting for various real outdoor scenes.

Emotion recognition in conversation (ERC) aims at accurately identifying emotional states expressed in conversational content. Existing ERC methods, although relying on semantic understanding, often encounter challenges when confronted with incomplete or misleading semantic information. In addition, when dealing with the interaction between emotional and semantic information, existing methods are often difficult to effectively distinguish the complex relationship between the two, which affects the accuracy of emotion recognition. To address the problems of semantic misdirection and emotional cross-talk encountered by traditional models when confronted with complex conversational data, we propose a semantic and emotional dual channel (SEDC) strategy for emotion recognition in conversations to process emotional and semantic information independently. Under this strategy, emotion information provides an auxiliary recognition function when the semantics are unclear or lacking, enhancing the accuracy of the model. Our model consists of two modules: the emotion processing module accurately captures the emotional features of each utterance through contrastive learning, and then constructs a dialogue emotion propagation map to simulate the emotional information conveyed in the dialogue;the semantic processing module combines an external knowledge base to enhance the semantic expression of the dialogue through knowledge enhancement strategies. This divide-and-conquer approach allows us to more deeply analyze the emotional and semantic dimensions of complex dialogues. Experimental results on the IEMOCAP, EmoryNLP, MELD, and DailyDialog datasets show that our approach significantly outperforms existing techniques and effectively improves the accuracy of dialogue emotion recognition. Task offloading management in 6G vehicular net-works is crucial for maintaining network efficiency, particularly as vehicles generate substantial data. Integrating secure communication through authentication introduces additional computational and communication overhead, significantly impacting offloading efficiency and latency. This paper presents a unified framework incorporating lightweight Identity-Based Cryptographic (IBC) authentication into task offloading within cloud-based 6G Vehicular Twin Networks (VTNs). Utilizing Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), our approach optimizes authenticated offloading decisions to minimize latency and enhance resource allocation. Performance evaluation under varying network sizes, task sizes, and data rates reveals that IBC authentication can reduce offloading efficiency by up to 50 % due to the added overhead. Besides, increasing network size and task size can further reduce offloading efficiency by up to 91.7%. As a countermeasure, increasing the transmission data rate can improve the offloading performance by as much as 63%, even in the presence of authentication overhead. The code for the simulations and experiments detailed in this paper is available on GitHub for further reference and reproducibility [1].

Healthcare data is often fragmented across various institutions due to its highly sensitive and private nature. In this sense, hospitals and clinics maintain electronic health records (EHRs) independently; hence, valuable data is siloed within individual organizations, preventing comprehensive analysis that could benefit from diverse data sources. Federated learning (FL) addresses these challenges by enabling the training of a shared global model using data distributed across multiple institutions without moving the data from its source. By leveraging FL, healthcare institutions can combine their data assets to improve predictive analytics, personalized medicine, and overall healthcare outcomes, ultimately benefiting patients and the healthcare system. However, the current FL model with a central server presents several challenges within healthcare, including the risk of malicious attacks, regulatory compliance, and privacy vulnerabilities. To overcome these issues, this paper introduces the FL framework with blockchain and homomorphic encryption (HE). Our framework aims to minimize the role of the central server, enable collaborative model training across healthcare organizations, and enhance data security and privacy. In this sense, blockchain ensures the integrity and transparency of the process, while homomorphic encryption ensures that the data remains private. This framework can potentially enable institutions to enrich medical knowledge while securely keeping patient data collaboratively and facilitating healthcare analytics in practical settings.

The conventional approach of choosing the best route to carry network traffic in wireless multi-hop networks does not maximize the overall network throughput and can lead to short-term instabilities in network state with dire consequences. To date, wireless network route selection considers mainly network or link metrics, always picking the best links, thus channeling all packets through a subset of all available links. This leaves weaker links under-utilized although such links can in fact be used to carry smaller packets or packets with less stringent requirements and free up bandwidth on the better links for larger packets or traffic with higher service requirements. As network traffic volume and heterogeneity increase in future networks, we need to maximize the usage of available network bandwidth and distribute the network traffic load. We combine network link metrics and packet attributes to determine the successful packet transmission probability, and then use this outcome to pick suitable links to forward the packet, which is not necessarily the link with the best metric. To validate the efficacy of our proposed approach in routing performance and energy efficiency, we applied it in routing for wireless multi-hop networks. More importantly, we are able to spread the traffic across nodes in the network, thus achieving better network load-balancing and higher network resource utilization.

Self-training through Classifier Disagreement for Cross-Domain Opinion Target Extraction

Opinion target extraction (OTE) or aspect extraction (AE) is a fundamental task in opinion mining that aims to extract the targets (or aspects) on which opinions have been expressed. Recent work focus on cross-domain OTE, which is typically encountered in real-world scenarios, where the testing and training distributions differ. Most methods use domain adversarial neural networks that aim to reduce the domain gap between the labelled source and unlabelled target domains to improve target domain performance. However, this approach only aligns feature distributions and does not account for class-wise feature alignment, leading to suboptimal results. Semi-supervised learning (SSL) has been explored as a solution, but is limited by the quality of pseudo-labels generated by the model. Inspired by the theoretical foundations in domain adaptation [2], we propose a new SSL approach that opts for selecting target samples whose model output from a domain-specific teacher and student network disagree on the unlabelled target data, in an effort to boost the target domain performance. Extensive experiments on benchmark cross-domain OTE datasets show that this approach is effective and performs consistently well in settings with large domain shifts. © 2023, CC BY.

The infection of Plasmodium vivax is relatively less virulent than the deathliest Plasmodium falciparum. However, it still can lead to a fatal case and often induces recurring malaria due to dormant parasites in the liver. Thus, the research to study the drug to treat Plasmodium vivax is essential, where the enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) has recently become a new drug target. However, the drug-enzyme interaction study has only recently been conducted in Plasmodium falciparum (pfDHODH) due to the lack of the 3D structure of enzyme DHODH from Plasmodium vivax that is crucial for the study. Therefore, this study aimed to perform the modelling study of Plasmodium vivax DHODH (PvDHODH) to create a 3D structure as a basis for drug-protein interaction study in upcoming studies. Sequence pvDHODH (Accession: SCO68359.1) was used in homology modelling using Modeller 10.2 with the crystal structure of DHODH from DHODH (Accession: 7KZY) as a template. Overall, the model generated from the homology modelling was considered a good model, and the 3D structure was close to the native state according to several parameters, including DOPE score, GA341 score, QMEAN4 value, 3D-1D score, ERRAT2 score, and ProSA score. Ramachandran plot also revealed that almost all amino acids were distributed in the desirable and allowed area (99.1%), and only 0.9% were in generously allowed regions. Superimposition of the model with the template also indicated that the model has an almost similar structure and amino acids positioning, including in the binding pocket and active site. Therefore, the model can be used for downstream analysis in drug-protein interaction studies. Nevertheless, some improvements can still be performed to upgrade the quality of the model by deleting unaligned residues on the C-terminal and realigning the residues at the doubting site.
