Existing genetic programming (GP) methods are typically designed based on a certain representation, such as tree-based or linear representations. These representations show various pros and cons in different domains. However, due to the complicated relationships among representation and fitness landscapes of GP, it is hard to intuitively determine which GP representation is the most suitable for solving a certain problem. Evolving programs (or models) with multiple representations simultaneously can alternatively search on different fitness landscapes since representations are highly related to the search space that essentially defines the fitness landscape. Fully using the latent synergies among different GP individual representations might be helpful for GP to search for better solutions. However, existing GP literature rarely investigates the simultaneous effective use of evolving multiple representations. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a multi-representation GP algorithm based on tree-based and linear representations, which are two commonly used GP representations. In addition, we develop a new cross-representation crossover operator to harness the interplay between tree-based and linear representations. Empirical results show that navigating the learned knowledge between basic tree-based and linear representations successfully improves the effectiveness of GP with solely tree-based or linear representation in solving symbolic regression and dynamic job shop scheduling problems. © 2024, CC BY.

Recommendation Systems (RSs) play a crucial role in assisting users in making decisions and finding their desired items in various domains, such as movies, music, and hotels. However, their complex algorithms often raise concerns about transparency, fairness, and user trust. To address these challenges, we tried to propose a theoretical approach that combines SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) and LIME (Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations) techniques to enhance the transparency and interpretability of RSs. We present a methodology for applying this approach in the context of movie recommendation, where SHAP values quantify global feature importance, and LIME explanations provide localized insights. This work can contribute to the advancement of transparent and user-centric RSs, with implications for a wide range of applications.

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) hold promise to improve the detection and treatment of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. However, detecting GNPs in the body remains an unmet technological challenge. This work introduces a new methodology for remotely localizing and tracking GNPs in various therapeutic settings, including through biological tissues, using a compact millimeter-wave radar system. By modeling GNP detection as a sparse recovery problem, we propose a method that localizes GNPs in cluttered environments as well as detects changes in concentrations that relate to changes in the intensity of the reflected signals. Our approach paves the way to a first-ever noninvasive, non-ionizing, simple approach for bioimaging and tracking GNPs inside the body.

Enhanced-SETL: A multi-variable deep reinforcement learning approach for contention window optimization in dense Wi-Fi networks

In this paper, we introduce the Enhanced Smart Exponential-Threshold-Linear (Enhanced-SETL) algorithm, a new approach that uses the multi-variable Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework to simultaneously optimize multiple settings of the Contention Window (CW) in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. Unlike traditional DRL methods that adjust only a single CW parameter, our innovative approach simultaneously optimizes both the CW minimum (CWmin) and CW Threshold (CWThreshold), significantly improving network traffic control. We utilize a Double Deep Q-learning Network (DDQN) for dynamic updates of these CW settings, broadcasted across the dense Wi-Fi networks. This dual adjustment method, coupled with dynamic, data-driven updates, not only enhances throughput, but also reduces collision rates, and ensures fairness access across both static and dynamic wireless environments. Enhanced-SETL achieves a throughput improvement ranging from 3.55% up to 43.73% and from 3.98% up to 30.15% in static and dynamic scenarios over standard protocols and state-of-the-art DRL models, while maintaining a fairness index near 99% across diverse stations, showcasing its effectiveness and adaptability in various network conditions. © 2024

Additive manufacturing is an innovative production approach aimed at creating products that traditional techniques cannot produce with the desired quality and requirements. Throughout the additive manufacturing process, data is either used (such as materials properties, printer characteristics and settings) or generated (such as monitoring data during printing, slicing strategies setting parameters). However, managing such data with complex relationships remains a significant challenge in both research and industry in the additive manufacturing field. To address this issue, we developed a modular ontology that can be used as the basis for a framework that supports decision-making systems, facilitate semanticsaware data management, and enhance the understanding and optimization of additive manufacturing processes. In this paper we focus on one of the state-of-the-art additive manufacturing approaches, i.e., powder bed fusion. To show the use and the feasibility of our approach, we created a knowledge graph for an actual additive manufacturing experiment based on our ontology, and show how queries relevant to domain experts can be answered using this knowledge graph. © 2024 CEUR-WS. Excitons,bound electron–hole pairs,in two-dimensional hybrid organic inorganic perovskites(2D HOIPs)are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons(E–Ps)when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical *** the case of 2D HOIPs,they can self-hybridize into E–Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the ***,the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E–Ps in 2D HOIPs,including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces,remain ***,we demonstrate that>0.5µm thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E–P *** E–Ps have high Q factors(>100)and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and *** varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements,we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy E–Ps to lower energy E–***,we also demonstrate that E–Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at *** findings provide new insights into charge and energy transfer in E–Ps opening new opportunities towards their manipulation for polaritonic devices.

In gene expression analysis, understanding a biological event that is observed at some time instance often requires capturing genes whose expression levels modulate before and after the event. Such genes are expected to be the responders to the event and will exhibit similar expression patterns during the event. However, after the effect of the event fades, their expression levels may loose their correlation. Hence, it is a non-trivial task to identify genes that share highly similar local expression patterns nearby the event and also allowing some level of divergent expression patterns further away from the event’s time point. Here, we propose LOCOS (LOcal COSine), a novel time-course clustering algorithm tailored to cluster genes exhibiting similar expression patterns within a specified time interval. LOCOS is an extension of the traditional Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), which incorporates the cosine similarity and Euclidean distances in its update procedure. LOCOS maximizes the cosine similarity within an interval of interest, while allowing a relaxed minimization of Euclidean distance outside it. Using synthetic and non-biological time-course data, we showed that LOCOS was able to correctly detect the known local patterns within a specified interval. Furthermore, we used longitudinal single-cell RNA-seq samples from four patients showing deteriorating and recovering health conditions to identify genes related to each of the phenotype. As a result, LOCOS was able to capture gene clusters with distinct expression patterns that aligned with the intervals embedding the clinical deterioration and recovery events.

This paper introduces an alternative technique for diagnosing Acute Ischemic Stroke within the IoMT environment. In the proposed approach, the collected data is transmitted to a cloud-based center where the technique utilizes EfficientNet, a deep learning model, designed to extract features from MRI images thereby enhancing the detection of acute ischemic infarctions. The performance of EfficientNet is compared against two other models, CNN and MobileNet, demonstrating its superior efficacy through metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, which stand at 92.31%, 92.28%, 92.33%, and 92.30%, respectively.

For microscopic cells images, cells’ morphologies are widely varied among different imaging modalities and staining methods. For fluorescence microscopy images, Poisson noises present in images due to the lightening, causing photobleaching, which makes it challenging in analysis with the deep learning models. Traditionally, median filtering can be applied to the original image for denoising, however, it also results in a blurry image, which is harmful to segmentation. In this study, the Haar Wavelet Transform is used to alleviate the photobleaching problem for cell segmentation, integrated to the framework without interfering with feature extraction by the backbone model. For our experiments, instance segmentation for fluorescence-stained cells was performed based on U-Net architecture with the method of gradient flow tracking proposed by Cellpose. And the Haar wavelet downsampling is embedded in the skip connections to verify if it can improve the segmentation performance for fluorescence images. The experimental results show that the approach of Haar wavelet downsampling embedded in the skip connections achieve superior performance among the other settings. Compared with the performance of the baseline model, the performance of the proposed model reached 0.732 in F1-score, which surpassed the one of baseline model (0.6341) by almost 0.1.

With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and natural disasters, insurance providers around the world are facing enormous challenges. This study addresses insurance claims resulting from these disasters by developing a comprehensive disaster insurance risk assessment model, focusing on Japan, a country prone to frequent earthquakes. The model integrates a Catastrophe Model, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and an expert scoring method to optimize the risk assessment and compensation process for historic buildings. The results show that the model has strong predictive power, which provides valuable insights for insurance companies, policymakers, and urban planners in mitigating the impact of disasters and protecting cultural heritage.
