Stereo computation is one of the vision problems where the presence of outliers cannot be neglected. Most standard algorithms make unrealistic assumptions about noise distributions, which leads to erroneous results that cannot be corrected in subsequent postprocessing stages. In this paper we present a modification of the standard area-based correlation approach so that it can tolerate a significant number of outliers. The approach exhibits a robust behavior not only in the presence of mismatches but also in the case of depth discontinuities. The confidence measure of the correlation and the number of outliers provide two complementary sources of information which, when implemented in a multiresolution framework, result in a robust and efficient method. We present the results of this approach on a number of synthetic and real images. © 1996 IEEE.

Understanding document images uploaded on social media is challenging because of multiple types like handwritten, printed and scene text images. This study presents a new model called Deep Fuzzy based MSER for classification of multiple document images (like handwritten, printed and scene text). The proposed model detects candidate components that represent dominant information irrespective of the type of document images by combining fuzzy and MSER in a novel way. For every candidate component, the proposed model extracts distance-based features which result in proximity matrix (feature matrix). Further, the deep learning model is proposed for classification by feeding input images and feature matrix as input. To evaluate the proposed model, we create our own dataset and to show effectiveness, the proposed model is tested on standard datasets. The results show that the proposed approach outperforms the existing methods in terms of average classification rate. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents a new method for automatic palmprint recognition based on kernel PCA method by integrating the Gabor wavelet representation of palm images. Gabor wavelets are first applied to derive desirable palmprint features. The Gabor transformed palm images exhibit strong characteristics of spatial locality, scale, and orientation selectivity. These images can produce salient features that are most suitable for palmprint recognition. The kernel PCA method then nonlinearly maps the Gabor-wavelet image into a high-dimensional feature space. The proposed algorithm has been successfully tested on two different public data sets from the PolyU palmprint databases for which the samples were collected in two different sessions.

Achieving good recognition results for License plates is challenging due to multiple adverse factors. For instance, in Malaysia, where private vehicle （e.g., cars） have numbers with dark background, while public vehicle （taxis/cabs） have numbers with white background. To reduce the complexity of the problem, we propose to classify the above two types of images such that one can choose an appropriate method to achieve better results. Therefore, in this work, we explore the combination of Convolutional Neural Networks （CNN） and Recurrent Neural Networks namely, BLSTM （Bi-Directional Long Short Term Memory）, for recognition. The CNN has been used for feature extraction as it has high discriminative ability, at the same time, BLSTM has the ability to extract context information based on the past information. For classification, we propose Dense Cluster based Voting （DCV）, which separates foreground and background for successful classification of private and public. Experimental results on live data given by MIMOS, which is funded by Malaysian Government and the standard dataset UCSD show that the proposed classification outperforms the existing methods. In addition, the recognition results show that the recognition performance improves significantly after classification compared to before classification.

Fast robotic unloading of piled deformable box-like objects (e.g. box-like sacks), is undoubtedly of great importance to the industry. Existing systems although fast, can only deal with layered, neatly placed configurations of such objects. In this paper we discuss an approach which deals with both neatly placed and jumbled configurations of objects. We use a time of flight laser sensor mounted on the hand of a robot for data acquisition. Target objects are modeled with globally deformed superquadrics. Object vertices are detected and superquadric seeds are placed at these vertices. Seed refinement via region growing results in accurate object recovery. Our system exhibits a plethora of advantages the most important of which its speed. Experiments demonstrate that our system can be used for object unloading in real time, when a multi-processor computer is employed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

We present a task from the critical infrastructure field in materials engineering. We created a surrogate model for the bridge construction object to determine the material parameters' values. The work aims to use neural networks to conduct an initial investigation of the task and to find out the aspects of machine learning application. To reduce the computational complexity of the models, we designed specific neural networks whose architecture corresponds to the structure and characteristics of the processed data. Furthermore, we outcome also interpretability and justification of the model's decision-making. The main contribution of the work is the replacement of the unknown or too complex physical, mathematical description of material objects with a neural network model. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper we propose a method to match pelage patterns of the Saimaa ringed seals enabling the re-identification of individuals. First, the pelage pattern is extracted from the seal's fur using a method based on the Sato tubeness filter. After this, the similarities of the pelage pattern patches are computed using a siamese network trained with a triplet loss function and a large dataset of manually selected patches. The similarities are then used to find the best matching patches from the images in the database of known individuals. Furthermore, we employ the proposed pattern matching method to build a full framework for the ringed seal re-identification, consisting of CNN-based animal segmentation, patch correspondence detection, and ranking the images in the database of known seal individuals based on the similarity to the query image. Our experiments on challenging datasets of Saimaa ringed seals show that the proposed method achieves promising identification results, providing a useful tool for the Saimaa ringed seal monitoring.

In this short paper, we present the devised solutions for the subject identification and relapse detection tasks, which are part of the e-Prevention Challenge hosted at the ICASSP 2023 conference [1] [2] [3]. We specifically design an ensemble scheme of six models - five transformer-based ones and a CNN model - for the identification of subjects from wearable devices, while a personalized - one for each subject - scheme is used for relapse detection in psychotic disorder. Our final submitted solutions yield top performance on both tracks of the challenge: we ranked 2 nd on the subject identification task (with an accuracy of 93.85%) and 1 st on the relapse detection task (with a ROC-AUC and PR-AUC of about 0.65). Text-Video Knowledge Guided Prompting for Weakly Supervised Temporal Action Localization

Weakly supervised temporal action localization (WTAL) aims to localize action instances with only video-level labels for supervision. Recent methods convert category labels to natural language through prompting and utilize pre-trained vision-language models to generate text representation from natural language for supervision. This is because natural language can provide more prosperous and generalized semantic supervision to compensate for the lack of supervision in weakly supervised scenarios. However, it should be noted that current prompting methods face limitations in generating dynamic prompts that adapt to each video, which leads to difficulties in accurately aligning text and video representations. In this work, we propose a novel Text-Video Knowledge Guided Prompting (TVKP) framework for WTAL, which generates video-aware prompts based on text-video knowledge to enhance semantic alignment between text and video representations and introduce more video-related external category labels to enrich semantic supervision. We introduce the video-aware prompting (VAP) module to learn text-video knowledge from the joint distribution of text and video representations to generate video-aware text representation. Meanwhile, to make VAP more effectively learn text-video knowledge, a text-video contrastive loss is proposed to ensure semantic consistency between text and video representations. In addition, we propose the external knowledge prompting (EKP) module to introduce more video-related text labels from an external knowledge base to enrich prompts for accurate semantic alignment. Extensive experiments are conducted on three public datasets, THUMOS14, ActivityNet1.2, and ActivityNet1.3, demonstrating that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods. © 1991-2012 IEEE.
