WISE is a software platform that enables easy authoring and exchange of educational materials amongst learning science researchers. This paper charts the recent evolution of the WISE technology, sharing lessons learned and describing a new open source framework called SAIL. We identify key challenges and design principles for technology-enhanced learning environments, and describe how we applied these principles to help WISE move from a single-developer codebase to an international open source codebase shared among multiple technology projects. Finally, we discuss the new types of community this transition fosters.

Database searches are usually performed with query languages and form fill in templates, with results displayed in tabular lists. However, excitement is building around dynamic queries sliders and other graphical selectors for query specification, with results displayed by information visualization techniques. These filtering techniques have proven to be effective for many tasks in which visual presentations enable discovery of relationships, clusters, outliers, gaps, and other patterns. Scaling visual presentations from millions to billions of records will require collaborative research efforts in information visualization and database management to enable rapid aggregation, meaningful coordinated windows, and effective summary graphics. This paper describes current and proposed solutions (atomic, aggregated, and density plots) that facilitate sense-making for interactive visual exploration of billion record data sets. During exploratory data analysis, visualizations are often useful for making sense of complex data sets. However, as data sets increase in size and complexity, static information visualizations decrease in comprehensibility. Interactive techniques can yield valuable discoveries, but current data analysis tools typically support only opportunistic exploration that may be inefficient and incomplete. We present a refined architecture that uses systematic yet flexible (SYF) design goals to guide domain expert users through complex exploration of data over days, weeks and months. The SYF system aims to support exploratory data analysis with some of the simplicity of an e-commerce check-out while providing added flexibility to pursue insights. The SYF system provides an overview of the analysis process, suggests unexplored states, allows users to annotate useful states, supports collaboration, and enables reuse of successful strategies. The affordances of the SYF system are demonstrated by integrating it into a social network analysis tool employed by social scientists and intelligence analysts. The SYF system is a tool-independent component and can be incorporated into other data analysis tools. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Today visual search tools are being used by children in Canada and Mongolia, and college students in the US. These diverse users each have their own needs, expectations, and uses for visual search and the results of such searches. This panel will address issues relating to visual search in diverse environments with various ages of users. The technologies studied are the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL), the children's portal, History Trek, and three web search engines (one visual–KartOO, one hybrid–Quintura, and one text-based--Google). Panelists will discuss users that range from children of ages 8 to 12, to college students and working adults in Canada, Germany, Honduras, Mongolia, New Zealand, and the United States. In this paper we will describe a new approach to navigation and interaction with the visualization of a data space of an electronic product data management (EPDM) system. The main problems are the amount of data and therefore the location of an item of interest, show specific relations and narrow or expand the information space. We combine a scalable visualization of the hierarchical data space with search and filter techniques like dynamic queries and direct manipulation to solve the stated problems. We assume that the proposed concept for EPDM can be adapted to data spaces like social networks or company structures. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Allison Druin, director of the human-computerinteractionlab (HCIL), shared her experiences during her research work for the development of advanced interactive technologies. Druin wandered about her father's mode of interaction with a wireless mouse that he used to find much more complex than the wired input devices. Druin concluded that those people who are at the beginning of their lives or those who have experienced a great deal of life can be concerned about their physical abilities, memory recall, and how robust the technology really is. HCI professional were only required to understand users' lifelong interaction between people of their technologies, and further support the opportunities for advanced technologies and possibilities for the future.

The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL), is a website of exemplary and freely available children's books with a child-friendly interface for finding and reading books online. The design, implementation, and deployment of the ICDL is done thorough a process called Cooperative Inquiry, which offers search parameters of various books. An IDCL weblog analysis confirms the academic research with practice, and allows children to read books in order or starting at any page by clicking on it. The website has received a positive feedback from users and has also been offered request from the World Bank and the Government of Mongolia to create a Mongolian version of the ICDL. The user countries of ICDL are aimed to identify economic impact of this technology and are aimed to use this website technology of online books in a variety of domains.

The development of complex web-based information spaces faces very demanding challenges. Requirements analysis and design demands interdisciplinary modelling approaches. When using typical paper-based methods, an IT organization often experiences frustrating communication issues between teams as well as with suppliers. We present a toolkit for XML-based prototyping of corporate websites at Daimler AG. The approach beats a new path towards interactive specifications of user interface (UI) requirements and the substitution of paper-based artifacts.
