This paper describes the evaluation of a gesture-based mechanism for issuing the back and forward commands in web navigation. Results show that subjects were able to navigate significantly faster when using gestures compared to the normal back button. They were also extremely enthusiastic about the technique, with several expressing their wish that "all browsers should support this".

This paper describes a pattern classification approach for detecting frontal-view faces via learning a decision boundary. The classification can be achieved either by explicit estimation of density functions of two classes, face and non-face or by direct learning of a classification function (decision boundary). The latter is a more effective approach, when the number of training available examples is small, compared to the dimensionality of image space. The proposed method consists of a implicit modeling of both face and near-face classes using Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and a subsequent classification stage based on the decision boundary estimation using Support Vector Machine (SVM). Multiple nonlinear SVMs are trained for local subspaces, considering the general non-Gaussian and multi-modal characteristic of face space. This parallelization of SVMs reduces computational cost of on-line classification, since the locally trained SVM has small number of support vectors compared to the SVM trained on entire data space. We showed that the proposed algorithm is superior to the simple combination of ICA and SVM, both in accuracy and computational burden.

Color is one of the most important low-level features used in image analysis and retrieval. In this paper we introduce an algorithm for extracting compact color feature in the CIElab color space. Our method is based on an ant colony clustering algorithm, which helps us develop a perceptually based image similarity metric. We propose a dominant color and area percentage model, which provides a very compact color feature representation of images. Besides image similarity metric is developed based on dominant colors matching. The algorithm introduced in this paper is well suited for creating small color descriptors and is efficient. It is suitable for image representation, matching and retrieval. It also has some important advantages for content-based image retrieval system, such as great reduction of the feature file sizes needed for storage and indexing.
