For the detection of objects floating in the river, most of the traditional intelligent video monitoring methods are used to monitor through manual viewing. During the traditional video data transmission and processing, the massive amount of data will put pressure on the background such as network and computing power. The new effective method is to crop and optimize YOLOV5s, add a specific image pre-processing module, and deploy it by edge computing, embed a SOC (System on Chip) chip in the web camera for real-time processing of video data. Simulation experiments prove that the above method can improve the accuracy and speed of the target detection network. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Nowadays, fingerprint is the most used biometric trait for individuals identification. In this area, the state-of-the-art algorithms are very accurate, but when the database contains millions of identities, an acceleration of the algorithm is required. From these algorithms, Minutia Cylinder-Code (MCC) stands out for its good results in terms of accuracy, however its efficiency in computational time is not high. In this work, we propose to use two different parallel platforms to accelerate fingerprint matching process by using MCC: (1) a multi-core server, and (2) a Xeon Phi coprocessor. Our proposal is based on heaps as auxiliary structure to process the global similarity of MCC. As heap-based algorithms are exhaustive (all the elements are accessed), we also explored the use an indexing algorithm to avoid comparing the query against all the fingerprints of the database. Experimental results show an improvement up to 97.15x of speed-up, which is competitive compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms in GPU and FPGA. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work for fingerprint identification using a Xeon Phi coprocessor. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Identifying arrhythmia substrates and quantifying their heterogeneity has great potential to provide critical guidance for radio frequency ablation. However, quantitative analysis of heterogeneity on cardiac optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is lacking. In this paper, we conduct the first study on quantifying cardiac tissue heterogeneity from human OCT images. Our proposed method applies a dropout-based Monte Carlo sampling technique to measure the model uncertainty. The heterogeneity information is extracted by decoupling the intra/inter-tissue heterogeneity and tissue boundary uncertainty from the uncertainty measurement. We empirically demonstrate that our model can highlight the subtle features from OCT images, and the heterogeneity information extracted is positively correlated with the tissue heterogeneity information from corresponding histology images. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

This paper describes the experience of deploying and operating the LOng-range Ultra-wIdeband Spectrum Sensing (LOUISS) testbed at the School of Electrical engineering & computer Science (SEECS) of the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST), Islamabad. The LOUISS testbed uses the Agilent N6841A RF sensors and was used to conduct a survey of spectrum occupancy in Islamabad. This paper provides a detailed description of the sensors' architecture as well as the architecture and configuration of the testbed. This is followed by results from an RF survey conducted on NUST's campus using LOUISS as a tool for dynamic spectrum sensing. Sample data sets from this RF survey have been made available online to the research community. Finally, two applications developed on top of this testbed are presented;1) A desktop application that flags illegal RF spectrum transmitters, tracks spectrum use, and allows interested parties to search for contiguous bands that are available for local use. 2) An Android app that makes geolocation information of transmitters available on mobile devices.

Extreme weather events have posed tremendous challenges to the operation of distribution networks. In this paper, we propose a decision-dependent chance-constrained model for the optimal planning of diesel generators, renewable distributed generations (RDGs), energy storage systems, and switches under contingency. A promising moment-based ambiguity set that incorporates the information of decision variables is employed to depict the uncertainty arising from RDGs. By leveraging effective approximation methods such as the Bonferroni approximation method to handle the considered joint chance constraints, the proposed model is transformed into a tractable mixed-integer second-order conic programming problem, which means it can easily be implemented. Numerical experiments are put forward on the IEEE 33-bus test system to validate the effectiveness of the developed approach. © 2023 IEEE.

We investigate the problem of choice overload - the difficulty of making a decision when faced with many options - when displaying related-article recommendations in digital libraries. So far, research regarding to how many items should be displayed has mostly been done in the fields of media recommendations and search engines. We analyze the number of recommendations in current digital libraries. When browsing fullscreen with a laptop or desktop PC, all display a fixed number of recommendations. 72% display three, four, or five recommendations, none display more than ten. We provide results from an empirical evaluation conducted with GESIS' digital library Sowiport, with recommendations delivered by recommendations-as-a-service provider Mr. DLib. We use click-through rate as a measure of recommendation effectiveness based on 3.4 million delivered recommendations. Our results show lower click-through rates for higher numbers of recommendations and twice as many clicked recommendations when displaying ten instead of one related-articles. Our results indicate that users might quickly feel overloaded by choice. © 2017, CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

Routing of contextual information within ubiquitous computing environments is a key challenge that must be tackled for such environments to be successful. It is accepted that such routing systems need to cope with mobile and volatile sources and destinations of contextual information, and semantic-based publish subscribe systems have been proposed as a means to support this. However such systems typically assume a common semantic model underpinning the routing which limits their ability to cope with heterogeneity. In contrast, the authors have developed a semantic-based publish subscribe system that is unique in allowing several semantic models to support routing. It is known from previous work that the number of semantic models in memory directly impacts on performance of routing, and that different loading strategies are needed, the selection of which is influenced by: the characteristics of the semantic model itself, the applications using the system and the network environment. This paper however just focuses on the experiments that have been undertaken to determine the key semantic model characteristics that may influence the selection of which loading strategy to use.
