A new proposal for multiobjective optimization using particle swarm optimization and rough sets theory

This paper presents a new multi-objective evolutionary algorithm which consists of a hybrid between a particle swarm optimization approach and some concepts from rough sets theory. The main idea of the approach is to combine the high convergence rate of the particle swarm optimization algorithm with a local search approach based on rough sets that is able to spread the nondominated solutions found, so that a good distribution along the Pareto front is achieved. Our proposed approach is able to converge in several test functions of 10 to 30 decision variables with only 4,000 fitness function evaluations. This is a very low number of evaluations if compared with today's standards in the specialized literature. Our proposed approach was validated using nine standard test functions commonly adopted in the specialized literature. Our results were compared with respect to a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm that is representative of the state-of-the-art in the area: the NSGA-II. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The electromagnetic (EM) measurements obtained by using one transmitter and one receiver antenna in a borehole environment are simulated. The measurements are used to assess electrical properties of rock formations. First, logging instruments as well as rock formation properties are assumed to exhibit axial symmetry around the axis of a vertical borehole. The optimal mesh for axially symmetric problem is obtained by a 2D self-adaptive goal-oriented hp-Finite Element Method (FEM) that delivers exponential convergence rates in terms of the quantity of interest against the CPU time. The 3D mesh is obtained by full revolution of the generated 2D mesh. The computations are then performed for angles of formation layers deviated by 30, 45 and 60 degrees. The concurrent engineering infrastructure that solves the problem automatically in parallel is presented. The 3D code has been verified by comparison of numerical results with the known exact solution of the problem of antenna radiating into a homogenous space, and by comparison of results of 2D and 3D code for the problem with axially symmetric layers in formation. © 2006 The authors. In the automotive field, software development methods and tools are used to cope with the high complexity of automotive software development. However, problems occur with the tracing of information, the assessment and monitoring of the development status, late and thus expensive changes, etc, which lead to increasing development costs and time as well as quality deficits. Our experience with recent projects have shown that the key to solving these problems lies in providing proper answers to the following questions: (1) How can development methods be assembled? (2) How can the use of a variety of development methods be supported by an appropriate tool? To answer these questions, we introduce a tool integration approach that is strongly based on the integration of development methods. The contribution of this paper is (a) a method integration approach that considers fine-grained method objects and their specific structure in addition to the usually considered artifacts, (b) an approach to tool integration that overcomes the deficits of heterogeneous tool environments and utilizes the results of the methodical understanding. Time series forecasting has been widely used to support decision making, in this context a highly accurate prediction is essential to ensure the quality of the decisions. Ensembles of machines currently receive a lot of attention;they combine predictions from different forecasting methods as a procedure to improve the accuracy. This paper explores Genetic Programming and Boosting technique to obtain an ensemble of regressors and proposes a new formula for the final hypothesis. This new formula is based on the correlation coefficient instead of the geometric median used by the boosting algorithm. To validate this method, experiments were performed, the mean squared error (MSE) has been used to compare the accuracy of the proposed method against the results obtained by GP, GP using a Boosting technique and the traditional statistical methodology (ARMA). The results show advantages in the use of the proposed approach. © 2006 IEEE.

Lecture recordings can be a powerful addition to traditional lectures and they can even serve as a main content source in a number of didactic scenarios. If users can quickly locate relevant passages in a recording, the recording combines the ease of search that comes with electronic text based media with the authenticity and wealth of information that is delivered in a live lecture. Locating relevant passages in a time based media such as a recorded lecture is, however, not as easy as searching an electronic text document. This paper advocates for interactive content overviews as an efficient navigation aid and presents an implementation that is based on SVG. It also discusses the feasibility of likewise approaches in other media formats

For many engineering educators, the topic of diversity can be frustrating and difficult. Writing and sharing individual diversity statements represents one strategy for empowering educators in their efforts to address diversity in their teaching. In this paper, we present the results of an empirical study in which graduate students (future engineering educators) prepared diversity statements as part of a teaching portfolio program. We focused our analysis on the discussions associated with diversity statement program sessions and found the talk during these sessions to be characterized by a variety of teaching and diversity ideas, an interweaving of teaching and diversity ideas, and equitable contribution among participants. We believe these results suggest that the diversity statement exercise has promise while also illustrating that graduate students are capable of tackling this complex issue with some success. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

Signal transition graphs (STGs) are a popular formalism for the specification of asynchronous circuits. A necessary condition for the implementability of an STG is the existence of a consistent and complete state encoding. For an important subclass of STGs, the marked graph STGs, we show that checking consistency is polynomial, but checking the existence of a complete state coding is co-NP-complete. In fact, co-NP-completeness already holds for acyclic and 1-bounded marked graph STGs and for live and 1-bounded marked graph STGs. We add some relevant results for free-choice, bounded, and general STGs

Rediscovering the historical methodology of the earth sciences by analyzing scientific communication styles

Despite the still-reigning concept of science proceeding by a monolithic "scientific method," philosophers and historians of science are increasingly recognizing that the scientific methodologies of the historical sciences (e.g., geology, paleontology) differ fundamentally from those of the experimental sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry). This new understanding promises to aid education, where currently, students are usually limited to the dominant paradigm of the experimental sciences, with little chance to experience the unique retrospective logic of the historical sciences. A clear understanding of these methodological differences and how they are expressed in the practice of the earth sciences is thus essential to developing effective educational curricula that cover the diversity of scientific methods. This chapter reviews the question of historical scientific methodology (focusing on geology), as it has been addressed by historians, philosophers, science educators, and working scientists. We present results of a novel linguistic analysis of scientific texts, which shows that such posited methodological differences are indeed reflected in scientific language use. Characteristic features of historical scientists' language can be directly connected to aspects of historical scientific methodology, as explicated by philosophers and historians of science. This shows that the same methodological concerns are reflected in working scientists' conceptualizations of their discipline. These results give guidance to science educators, in the light of the recent emphasis on teaching language skills, such as "Writing across the Curriculum," in order to focus on teaching and evaluating language and discourse skills within the methodological conceptual framework of the historical sciences. © 2006 Geological Society of America.

This paper describes a methodology to support the design process of complex systems. The main challenge in modern industrial applications is the sheer volume of data involved in the design process. While using high-level abstraction is necessary to manage this data and analyze the system "as a whole", designers need also to retain all the low-level information of the system, in order to be able to perform optimizations and modifications at later times. The solution proposed here is to use a hierarchy of models that describe the system at different levels of abstraction, and are arranged in such a way that is possible to easily "map" each level onto the others.
