This study investigates the heat and mass transfer characteristics of MHD rotating Fe₃O₄-Al₂O₃/H₂O hybrid nanofluid flow over a three-dimensional stretching surface. Comparative analysis was conducted among the base fluid H₂O, Al₂O₃-H₂O nanofluid, and Fe₃O₄-Al₂O₃/H₂O hybrid nanofluid, focusing on velocity, temperature, and concentration distributions influenced by thermophoresis, Brownian motion, Hall current, temperature ratio, magnetic parameter, rotation, and thermal radiation. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations were transformed into ordinary differential equations using similarity adaptations and solved numerically with the BVP-5C method in MATLAB. Results indicate that increasing the thermophoresis and Brownian motion parameters elevates the temperature profile while affecting the concentration distribution differently. The hybrid nanofluid exhibited a higher temperature distribution compared to the nanofluid and base fluid, whereas the base fluid showed a greater concentration gradient. © 2024 The Author(s)

A Time-Series Higher-Order Network Hierarchical Evolution Model for Dynamic Interaction of Nodes

The evolution of hierarchies in complex systems is an exciting phenomenon since hierarchies exist in many social and biological networks. So far, many approaches have been proposed, however, they are either based on the locality of the nodes or the cluster relationships between networks. These approaches often use traditional time-series network modeling methods that focus only on local static relationships between different nodes but ignore the dynamic interactions between real network nodes. Local static and dynamic global relationships should be considered to understand better the generation and maintenance of hierarchical phenomena in networks. To address this problem, we propose a long-term, flexible hierarchical evolution model for explaining the hierarchical phenomena arising in networks. Our model can integrate both local static and dynamic global information in the network and use time and higher-order inter-node interactions to integrate static and dynamic relationships. New interactions in the network are formed based on preference information between nodes, while old links fade out over time. In addition, we derive critical points for the hierarchical evolution of the system over long periods. Importantly, our model allows the comparison of network rank formation across different data as a way to perform rank evolution studies. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion model with gestation delay and weak Allee effect. The conditions of delay-induced instability are obtained after stability analysis. By using numerical simulation, we discuss the effects of gestation delay and weak Allee effect on the Turing pattern. The results show that weak Allee effect and gestation delay can change the pattern formations. This means Allee effect and delay play significant roles in spatial invasion of populations. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Equivariant Graph neural Networks (EGNs) are powerful in characterizing the dynamics of multi-body physical systems. Existing EGNs conduct flat message passing, which, yet, is unable to capture the spatial/dynamical hierarchy for complex systems particularly, limiting substructure discovery and global information fusion. In this paper, we propose Equivariant Hierarchy-based Graph Networks (EGHNs) which consist of the three key components: generalized Equivariant Matrix Message Passing (EMMP), E-Pool and E-UnPool. In particular, EMMP is able to improve the expressivity of conventional equivariant message passing, E-Pool assigns the quantities of the low-level nodes into high-level clusters, while E-UnPool leverages the high-level information to update the dynamics of the low-level nodes. As their names imply, both E-Pool and E-UnPool are guaranteed to be E(n)-equivariant to meet the physical symmetry. Considerable experimental evaluations verify the effectiveness of our EGHN on several applications including multi-object dynamics simulation, motion capture, and protein dynamics modeling. © 2022, CC BY.

This paper outlines the effectiveness of an undergraduate mentoring program offered through the department of computer science at the University of Maryland in retaining historically marginalized undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science (STEM-CS) majors. Each undergraduate teacher/mentor (called an Ambassador) is responsible for providing support for current university students or for K-12 computing outreach programs. Enrollment and survey data show that the Ambassador program is successful in retaining undergraduate computing majors in STEM-CS. Ambassadors indicated that they appreciated the community aspect of the Ambassador program and they felt empowered to solve diversity problems in STEM-CS.

Background: Examining the effects of elastic deformation and melting phenomena on mass and heat transmission while examining the constant two-dimensional flow of a dusty hybrid nanofluid over a sheet containing gyrotactic microbes and porous media is the primary objective of this investigation. Method: The controlling partial differential equations are converted into ordinary differential equations by using the proper similarity transformation. The system of equations is then numerically solved using an efficient bvp4c approach. Applications: In the realm of bioengineering, this model is very useful, especially when constructing sophisticated cooling systems for biomedical devices where accurate temperature control is essential. The model's insights are also useful in environmental engineering, where they can be used to improve pollutant removal methods in water treatment procedures by enhancing bioconvective flows. This research also offers greater control over manufacturing operations that need precise temperature and fluid dynamic management in industrial processes involving the manipulation of non-Newtonian fluids. Outcomes: As the elastic deformation increases, the concentration and temperature distributions decrease. The velocity, microorganism's, thermal and concentration field enhance as augments the value of melting parameter. © 2025

Chaos is not only a unique chapter in the theory of dynamical systems but also a useful one with many applications in the field of communications. In this work a cyclometric modification of the well-known example of chaotic systems, the modified differential equations describing the behavior of the Chua-circuit is investigated. The results obtained can be applied in the encryption methods of the implementation of different communication channels like machine-machine or cognitive one.

Who Said What? An Automated Approach to Analyzing Speech in Preschool Classrooms

Young children spend substantial portions of their waking hours in noisy preschool classrooms. In these environments, children’s vocal interactions with teachers are critical contributors to their language outcomes, but manually transcribing these interactions is prohibitive. Using audio from child- and teacher-worn recorders, we propose an automated framework that uses open source software both to classify speakers (ALICE) and to transcribe their utterances (Whisper). We compare results from our framework to those from a human expert for 110 minutes of classroom recordings, including 85 minutes from child-word microphones (n=4 children) and 25 minutes from teacher-worn microphones (n=2 teachers). The overall proportion of agreement, that is, the proportion of correctly classified teacher and child utterances, was .76, with an error-corrected kappa of .50 and a weighted F1 of .76. The word error rate for both teacher and child transcriptions was .15, meaning that 15% of words would need to be deleted, added, or changed to equate the Whisper and expert transcriptions. Moreover, speech features such as the mean length of utterances in words, the proportion of teacher and child utterances that were questions, and the proportion of utterances that were responded to within 2.5 seconds were similar when calculated separately from expert and automated transcriptions. The results suggest substantial progress in analyzing classroom speech that may support children’s language development. Future research using natural language processing is under way to improve speaker classification and to analyze results from the application of the automated framework to a larger dataset containing classroom recordings from 13 children and 3 teachers observed on 17 occasions over one year. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Interdisciplinary knowledge sharing is a crucial component of higher education. The use of asynchronous online discussion forums as a medium for fostering interdisciplinary knowledge sharing is effective, as it allows for the sharing, posting, and reflecting of information among learners outside of traditional classroom settings. However, the sheer volume of posts in such forums can threaten the quality of discussion and the ability of instructors to provide timely evaluations. To address this issue, an automated post-rating system has been developed utilizing a BERT-based AI model. This system evaluates learners' posts and provides prompt categorization outcomes into three categories: non-informative, informative, and neutral, within 10 seconds. Our model demonstrated appropriate accuracy in assessing the information density in forum posts, indicating potential benefits for both learners and instructors. Specifically, it achieved 67%, 68%, and 75% accuracy rates for posts categorized as discussion, comment, and reply, respectively. To assess the effectiveness of the system, it was tested and evaluated using two courses, “Python Programming” and “Introduction to AI,” through the use of a questionnaire. Results revealed that learners held positive evaluations of the system, noting improvements in post quality, reduced plagiarism, and enhanced comprehension. Additionally, feedback from open-ended questions also indicated the benefits of automatic feedback on post quality.
