Full spectrum of novelties in time-dependent urn models

Systems driven by innovation, a pivotal force in human society, present various intriguing statistical regularities, from the Heaps' law to logarithmic scaling or somewhat different patterns for the innovation rates. The urn model with triggering (UMT) has been instrumental in modeling these innovation dynamics. Yet a generalization is needed to capture the richer empirical phenomenology. Here we introduce a time-dependent urn model with triggering (TUMT), a generalization of the UMT that crucially integrates time-dependent parameters for reinforcement and triggering to offer a broader framework for modeling innovation in nonstationary systems. Through analytical computation and numerical simulations, we show that the TUMT reconciles various behaviors observed in a broad spectrum of systems from patenting activity to the analysis of gene mutations. We highlight how the TUMT features a “critical” region where both Heaps' and Zipf's laws coexist, for which we compute the exponents.

The objective of this paper is to construct geometrically Riemann k-wave solutions of the general form of first-order quasilinear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. To this end, we adapt and combine elements of two approaches to the construction of Riemann k-waves, namely the symmetry reduction method and the generalized method of characteristics. We formulate a geometrical setting for the general form of the k-wave problem and discuss in detail the conditions for the existence of k-wave solutions. An auxiliary result concerning the Frobenius theorem is established. We use it to obtain formulae describing the k-wave solutions in closed form. A solution to the problem of evaluating the temporal and quantitative characteristics of the storage and processing of artificial neural networks based on a neurocomputer device is proposed. The most popular and used topologies of artificial neural networks are considered, for which analytical relationships are presented that allow evaluating the training cycle of an artificial neural network, the amount of memory needed and the amount of transmitted data. The proposed relationships differ in that approaches and characteristics unique to neuroprocessor devices are offered for evaluation when implementing the calculations presented in the neural network logical basis.

Patterns-descriptions of proven and well-documented solutions for recurring problems { have gained widespread interest and acceptance in the area of business process modeling. In the past years, a large number of such patterns have been documented in the literature. However, it is still difficult to find patterns that can be useful in a given context. The reason is that the relevant publications are spread in various journals and other types of publications, and there is no guidance for locating a pattern that can be useful for solving a given problem. In this demo, we present an interactive web-site that provides a comprehensive overview on published work in the field of business process modeling patterns. It allows finding publications on business process modeling patterns based on various search criteria. It is intended to be useful both for business process modeling practitioners as for researchers in need of sound literature references. Currently, this catalog (meant to be a growing resource) provides an categorization of 95 publications on patterns as well as 50 publication on anti-patterns. © 2019 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

In recent years, opinion mining has played a major role in analyzing text data from various sources such as Amazon, Capterra, Facebook, Google, GetApp, and Twitter. It enables companies to actively refine their business strategies. Sentiment analysis involves interpreting and classifying customer emotions (positive, neutral, and negative) expressed in reviews using sentiment analysis techniques such as BING and AFINN. This paper presents four approaches for customer review analysis and classification: the grade-based approach, content-based approach, content-based NRC-Emotion Lexicon approach, and collaborative approach. We employ three machine learning algorithms—stacking, random forest, and LogitBoost—to evaluate the performance of these approaches. A real-time dataset from Amazon product reviews is used for training and testing the model. Empirical results reveal that the collaborative approach outperforms the grade-based, content-based, and content-based NRC-Emotion Lexicon approaches across all three machine learning algorithms. Additionally, all approaches demonstrate outstanding performance when using the boosting algorithm for customer review classification. © 2025 The Author(s)

In the study, it was for the first time justified and applied the method of rhythmcardiogram automatic formation with the increased informativeness by means of preliminary registered rhythmcardiogram processing. This method allows automating completely the process of heart rhythm analysis based on rhythmcardiogram with the increased informativeness in the computer systems of human heart rhythm functional diagnostics and is more informative compared with the known methods of heart rhythm analysis based on the classical rhythmcardiogram.

Recurrent ischemic priapism is a common complication of sickle cell anemia (SCA) and is associated with devastating physical and psychosocial consequences. All previous trials for priapism prevention have failed to demonstrate clear efficacy. We conducted a randomized, controlled, double-blind phase 2 feasibility trial comparing fixed moderate-dose hydroxyurea plus placebo (usual care arm) versus fixed moderate-dose hydroxyurea plus tadalafil (experimental arm) in 64 men (18- 40 years) with at least three episodes of SCA-related priapism in the past 12 months. Priapism data were obtained via daily text messages to the participants. The trial's primary outcome measures were 100% recruitment, 98.4% retention, and 93.5% adherence rates. Over a median of 10 months (IQR: 3-12), 2.5 and 3.02 priapism events per participant-month were recorded in the usual care and the experimental arms, with an incidence rate ratio of 0.8; 95% CI: 0.3 –1.9; p= 0.654. Serious adverse events (p=0.999) and hospitalizations (p=0.289) were similar in both arms. Sperm concentration, motility, and normal morphology significantly decreased on hydroxyurea therapy but recovered to pre-hydroxyurea levels three months after therapy cessation. Post-hoc, single-arm, pre- and post-analysis comparing the priapism rate in the treatment phase to pre-randomization showed a 58.3% priapism incidence rate reduction in the usual care arm (5.9 to 2.5 events per month; difference 3.4, 95% CI: 1.1 - 5.8; p=0.005]) and 66.3% priapism reduction in the experimental arm (8.9 to 3.02 events per month; difference 5.9; 95% CI: 3.4 - 8.5; p<0.001]). A randomized controlled trial for priapism prevention is feasible in men with SCA. (NCT05142254).

The article determines the influence of threats on economic security of enterprises. It offers the directions of counteraction to the threats to economic security of enterprises, which involve the expansion in international markets, diversification of production, development of innovation activity by strengthening of scientific and technical interaction, which will promote a more efficient use of enterprises' potential. The article presents the proposals on improving the process of making managerial decisions for boosting the effectiveness of counteraction to the threats. It proves the necessity of using the indicator of bankruptcy probability diagnosis in the system of assessing the state of economic security of enterprises for a more complete study of the threats to economic security. The article suggests the improved mechanism of counteraction to the threats to economic security, based on the concept that takes into account the use of the opportunities provided by external and internal environments, perspective directions of development, strengthening of integration links of functional systems of the enterprise with the aim of effective counteraction to the threats to economic security and ensuring economic growth of subject of management. The article substantiates the criteria of selection of suppliers of enterprises and defines the conceptual bases of a choice of perspective for markets of the enterprises. The study also determines the necessity of adherence to the principles of complexity, professionalism, and activity with the purpose of effective work of the mechanism of counteraction to the threats to economic security. © 2019 IEEE.

Influenza viruses constantly evolve, and mismatches between predicted and circulating strains impact vaccine effectiveness. A barrier to predicting the season-specific dominant strains is the limited ability to predict future mutations, or estimate the numerical likelihood of specific future strains. Here, we introduce a biology-aware sequence similarity metric based on deep pattern recognition of evolutionary constraints, that calculate the odds of future mutations, outperforming WHO recommended flu vaccine compositions almost consistently over the two decades. © 2021, CC BY.
