Synergistic effect of silicon availability and salinity on metal adsorption in a common estuarine diatom

Increasing nitrogen and phosphorus discharge and decreasing sediment input have made silicon(Si)a limiting element for diatoms in *** in nutrient structure and salinity fluctuation can greatly affect metal uptake by estuarine ***,the combined effects of Si and salinity on metal accumulation in these diatoms have not been *** this study,we aimed to investigate how salinity and Si availability combine to influence the adsorption of metals by a widely distributed diatom Phaeodactylum *** data indicate that replete Si and low salinity in seawater can enhance cadmium and copper adsorption onto the diatom *** the single-cell level,surface potential was a dominant factor determining metal adsorption,while surface roughness also contributed to the highermetal loading capacity at lower *** a combination of noninvasive micro-test technology,atomic force microscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,we demonstrate that the diversity and abundance of the functional groups embedded in diatom cell walls vary with salinity and Si *** results in a change in the cell surface potential and transient metal *** study provides novel mechanisms to explain the highly variable metal adsorption capacity of a model estuarine diatom.

Robust Stability and Stabilizability Conditions for Time-Delay Systems Under Stochastic Uncertainties

This study first explores the mean-square robust stability problem of stable continuous-time linear time-invariant systems subject to stochastic multiplicative uncertainties with prescribed variance bounds. The internal structures of uncertainties, however, are not presumed to cope with diverse random noises and errors arising from networked channels. A necessary and sufficient mean-square stability condition is obtained involving a novel small-gain type characterization. Next, we consider the output feedback controller synthesis problem of networked control systems facing stochastic multiplicative uncertainties and intrinsic channel-wise time delays simultaneously. Based on the obtained mean-square stability condition, further, we develop a fundamental necessary and sufficient condition of mean-square stabilizability explicitly. Such a condition equivalently determines that an open-loop unstable system can be stabilized by output feedback in the mean-square sense. Finally, an analysis of delay robustness is elaborated, in which the mean-square stabilizability condition is extended to the case tolerating uncertain but upper-bounded time delays. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the robust mean-square stability and mean-square stabilizability of time-delay systems under stochastic uncertainties, which can have practical implications for networked control systems. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Fiber electronics with flexible and weavable features can be easily integrated into textiles for wearable applications. However, due to small sizes and curved surfaces of fiber materials, it remains challenging to load robust active layers, thus hindering production of high-sensitivity fiber strain sensors. Herein, functional sensing materials are firmly anchored on the fiber surface in-situ through a hydrolytic condensation *** anchoring sensing layer with robust interfacial adhesion is ultra-mechanically sensitive, which significantly improves the sensitivity of strain sensors due to the easy generation of microcracks during stretching. The resulting stretchable fiber sensors simultaneously possess an ultra-low strain detection limit of 0.05%, a high stretchability of 100%, and a high gauge factor of 433.6, giving 254-folds enhancement in sensitivity. Additionally, these fiber sensors are soft and lightweight, enabling them to be attached onto skin or woven into clothes for recording physiological signals, e.g. pulse wave velocity has been effectively obtained by them. As a demonstration, a fiber sensor-based wearable smart healthcare system is designed to monitor and transmit health status for timely intervention. This work presents an effective strategy for developing high-performance fiber strain sensors as well as other stretchable electronic devices.

High-temperature superconductivity of Pm3¯n Lu4H23 immersed in an as-synthesized lutetium polyhydride

The precompression effect of foreign elements affords a promising route to metallizing hydrogen atoms under moderate pressure and achieving superconductivity with high transition temperature (TC) in polyhydrides. Recently, lutetium (Lu) polyhydrides are receiving considerable attention due to their fully filled f orbitals, which are favorable for realizing high TC. The highest TC observed in the as-synthesized lutetium polyhydrides up to now has reached 65–71 K under pressures of 181–218 GPa, which was attributed to the Pm3¯n Lu4H23 phase but without computational analysis. Here we perform first-principles calculations on the bonding feature, the stability, the electronic property, and the superconductivity of Lu4H23. Lu4H23 presents robust metallicity due to the orbital hybridizations associated with the H-H covalent and Lu-H ionic bonds, as well as the charge transfer from Lu to H atoms. Our calculations reveal that Lu4H23 can be stabilized at pressures above ∼200 GPa, whose TC is estimated to be 69–225 (103–210) K at 200 (218) GPa and maintains at the average values around 150–200 K under the pressures exceeding 250 GPa. We propose that the Fm3¯m LuH plays a possible role in stabilizing Lu4H23 at pressures lower than 200 GPa, and, simultaneously, decreases the TC of superconductivity in the as-synthesized lutetium polyhydrides. Our work provides a computational analysis on Lu4H23, and the predicted high TC is expected to be experimentally realized by increasing pressure and optimizing synthesis process to eliminate the LuH phase.

Energy is one of the most important topics in the world today and is considered as one of the most effective factors for the development of countries. Due to the limitation of non-renewable energy sources and undesirable effects of consuming these resources on the environment, the strategy of countries has changed towards the use of renewable energy. Renewable energy sources do not decrease over time and operate independently of price fluctuations and are more available, thus being able to play a greater role in modern power systems. Therefore, the optimal location and use of these resources will have an impact on modifying the parameters of the power grid. In this paper an analytical approach for optimal placement and sizing of distributed generation (DG) in power distribution networks to minimize the power loss, bus voltage limits, DG capacity limits, current limits, and DG penetration limit. In the first step, determines the DG capacity causing maximum benefit at different buses, and then selects the best location for DG placement which corresponds to highest benefit in the buses. This method is applicable for sizing and siting of single as well as multiple DG units. The coot bird optimization method (CBOM) is proposed for solving optimal placement, size, and power factor (PF) of DG in distribution network. The suggested method is tested on the IEEE 33-bus, 69-bus, Distribution Networks. The proposed CBOM method has good performance to find optimal placement, size, and PF of DG and it can be applied for various distribution system. © 2023, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Fluorinated salts and/or high salt concentrations are usually necessary to produce protective films on the electrodes for high-voltage aqueous batteries,yet these approaches increase the cost,toxicity and reaction resistances of ***,we report a dilute fluorine-free electrolyte design to overcome this *** using the LiClO_(4) salt and polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether(PED)solvent and optimizing the LiClO_(4)/PED/H_(2)O molar ratio,we formulate a 1 mol kg^(-1)3 V-class hybrid aqueous electrolyte that enables reversible charge/discharge of 2.5 V LiMn_(2)O_(4)|Li_(4)Ti_(5)O_(12) full cell at both low(0.5C,92.4%capacity retention in 300 cycles)and high(5C,80.4%capacity retention in 2000 cycles)*** excellent performance is reached even without the generation of protective film on either anode or cathode as identified by in/ex situ *** selection of appropriate ingredients that have both high stability and strong interactions with water is critical to widen the potential window of electrolyte while suppressing parasitic reactions on the *** work suggests that expensive and toxic fluorinate salts are no longer necessary for 3 V-class aqueous electrolytes,boosting the development of low-cost,environmentally-friendly,high-power and high-energy-density aqueous batteries.

Introduction of vacancies is a widely practiced method to improve the performance of active materials in differentenergy systems, such as secondary batteries, electrocatalysis, and supercapacitors. Because vacancies can generateabundant localized electrons and unsaturated cations, the incorporation of vacancies will significantly improvethe electrical conductivity, ion migration, and provides additional active sites of energy storage materials. Thisarticle systematically reviews different methods to generate oxygen, nitrogen, or selenium vacancies, and techniques to characterize these vacancies. We summarize the specific roles that vacancies play for the active materials in each type of energy storage devices. Additionally, we provide insights into the research progress andchallenges associated with the future development of vacancies technology in various energy storage systems.
