Neural Reactivity to Haptics: Virtual Tasks Versus Physical Tasks

This study investigates the effectiveness of haptic feedback in hand rehabilitation exercises, within both virtual reality (VR) and real-world settings, to enhance upper limb functionality in post-stroke recovery. We developed a VR system that incorporates haptic feedback into pinch simulations and compared its efficacy with similar real-world pinch training exercises, primarily focusing on the rehabilitation of the paretic hand. Our main objective was to ascertain the similarity of the simulated haptic feedback in the VR environment to actual tactile feedback in the real world. This was achieved by analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) features and psychometric data collected from 35 healthy subjects. A key aspect of our approach was the use of machine learning (ML) techniques to classify the EEG signal features as originating from VR or Real tasks. This classification was based on data from the top-n electrode channels, enabling us to assess the degree of similarity in brain responses to tactile stimulation in both environments. The study's results revealed that the brain activity patterns elicited by haptic feedback were comparable in both the VR and real-world setups. Additionally, the VR feedback system was positively received by users, scoring high on experience and satisfaction metrics. This research provides a replicable methodology for assessing tactile feedback in existing rehabilitation systems and lays the groundwork for the development of novel therapeutic applications. Our findings are crucial for designing future rehabilitation interventions that effectively utilize haptic feedback, potentially leading to improved treatment outcomes for stroke patients. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Comprehensive multimodal approach for Parkinson’s disease classification using artificial intelligence: insights and model explainability

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions worldwide. Early detection is vital for effective management, yet remains challenging. In this study, we investigated four distinct datasets for PD detection. Through comprehensive experimentation employing ensemble methods and feature selection, we achieved high classification accuracies across the datasets. For the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Detection Dataset, an accuracy of 95.67%, precision of 97.59%, recall of 84.5%, specificity of 99.32%, and F1-score of 90.57% were achieved. For the Alzheimer Parkinson Diseases 3 Class Dataset, the "Stacking" approach surpasses individual models, reaching an accuracy of 99.85%, precision of 99.81%, recall of 99.81%, specificity of 99.86%, and F1 of 99.81%. For the NewHandPD dataset, Regarding the Spiral category, The "Base-P32-384" model surpasses others with an accuracy of 97.35%, precision of 96.50%, recall of 98.57%, and F1-score of 97.53%. The collective "Stacking" approach proves highly effective regarding the Circle category, achieving 100% across all performance metrics. Regarding the Meander category, the "Base-P16-224" model achieves an accuracy of 97.35%, precision of 99.26%, recall of 95.71%, specificity of 99.19%, and F1 of 97.45%. The Mobile Device Voice Recordings at King’s College London (MDVR-KCL) dataset contains two datasets. Regarding the "SpontaneousDialogue" dataset, accuracy, BAC, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score were computed, resulting in values of 94.03%, 92.83%, 90.78%, 100.0%, and 85.67%, respectively. Regarding the "ReadText" dataset, accuracy, BAC, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score were computed, resulting in values of 91.89%, 90.62%, 87.5%, 100.0%, and 81.25%, respectively. The research proposes the application of Digital Intelligent Assistants (DIAs) as proactive agents that can support employees in dealing with cybersecurity issues in sustainable industrial processes underlying the importance of a fruitful Human-Artificial Intelligence collaboration. Cyber-attacks around the world are constantly increasing. DIAs are becoming more effective, also thanks to the use of Large Language Models. Users are required to recall security procedures and rules. Moreover, attacks are constantly evolving and following different patterns. The study presents how a DIA can be a backup agent during and after an attack. The application of digital intelligent assistance technology helps to reduce the cognitive load and pressure that users feel during downtime. In addition, the solution enhances attack reporting by decreasing the shame experienced by the victims. The research proposes a methodological design defining the agent's technical and functional characteristics and its adaptive relationship with human characteristics. The solution is developed using the RASA framework and evaluated through a case study based on a phishing attack scenario. © 2025 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

With the rise in frequency of catastrophic events, enviromental protection and risk management have become critical challenges for assuring both the safety of human pop-ulations and the sustainability of ecosystems. In this direction, the ARIES project has deveoped a suite of functionalities and software solution to support emergency operators in all phases of emergency management, from risk estimation to enviromental monitoring, early detection and response. The present paper provides an overview of the main functionalities that consistute the buidling blocks of the enviromental monitoring system developed by the project through a combination of dynamical systems, digital twins and convolutional neural networks, also reporting on its early validation activities. © 2024 IEEE.

The convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technologies has gained substantial traction in recent years, owing to the rapid advancement of communication technologies worldwide. This research introduces a prototype model that seamlessly integrates an IoT platform with blockchain technology to ensure the integrity of data. The prototype establishes a decentralized framework for IoT devices, underpinned by a private blockchain infrastructure capable of replicating device data and validating transactions among devices through a consensus mechanism. Nevertheless, the implementation of this concept necessitates a closer examination of various considerations. One crucial aspect to address is transforming data generated by diverse IoT devices into a format compatible with the blockchain. This research takes a proactive approach to effective data management within the blockchain. Initially, we collect data from IoT devices and systematically store it in a blockchain-compatible manner. The custom blockchain and smart contract components define the data access policies for end-users. Within this model, we categorize IoT appliances responsible for different services into distinct sets of chains. These sets of chains collaboratively exchange data while adhering to a comprehensive access control *** research endeavors to harmonize IoT and blockchain technologies through a prototype that safeguards data integrity. It tackles the challenge of data conversion from various IoT devices into a blockchain-compatible format and outlines a sophisticated data management strategy. By delineating access policies and segmenting IoT appliances into specialized sets of chains, this model aims to facilitate secure and efficient data sharing among decentralized IoT devices. © 2024 IEEE.

The implementation of robotics and human support technologies has opened up new possibilities for recovering the mobility impaired and increasing human productivity in the last few decades. Exoskeletons have been developed as a major component of this progress in order to capture any form of arm motion be it passive or active. Motion capture systems, employing different sensors like IMU sensors, EMG sensors, motion sensors, fiber optic sensors are used to capture arm movements. These sensors provide information on position, movement, muscle contraction, and movement intent of the arm. The use of multiple sensor types allows for redundancy and accurate outcomes. Potentiometer position sensor can be combined with other types of sensors to measure acceleration, orientation, force exerted and arm bendability. The combinations improve accuracy and adaptability for arm motion capture during rehabilitation. Various combinations of adapted sensors can be used for each joint of the hand depending on the peculiarities of application. Sensors enable precise and natural control over recovery devices or exoskeletons which is especially important in terms of rehabilitation process improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper considers the problem of approximating the infinite-horizon value function of the discrete-time switched LQR *** particular,the authors propose a new value iteration method to generate a sequence of monotonically decreasing functions that converges exponentially to the value *** method facilitates us to use coarse approximations resulting from faster but less accurate algorithms for further value iteration,and thus,the proposed approach is capable of achieving a better approximation for a given computation time compared with the existing *** numerical examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In addition to its use in building and agriculture, global solar irradiance is one of the most critical aspects in designing and considering any solar station's volume. Because the Iraqi metrological organization and seismology lack exact information regarding irradiance, this project aims to use historical global data, develop numerical analysis using artificial neural networks, and forecast hourly irradiance. The test is run over Basra to determine references to their nearest places. The learning technique in this study is a forward neural network (FNN) and time series neural network. Their comparison depends on seven input variables: temperature, wind speed, wind direction, sunshine duration, and date. One of the most essential integrated and impactful events for managing the system of new and renewable energy sources in the power grid is accurate solar energy forecasting. The study offers a valuable method for forecasting solar energy generation using neural networks. It is difficult to apply neural networks to anticipate PV power generation because of the unpredictability of variations in the weather;unlike traditional mathematical models, which struggle to handle complicated nonlinear interactions and provide poor predictions, neural network approaches achieve superior prediction performance. The suggested forecasting model based on neural networks provides a practical means of raising the accuracy of PV generation estimation. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper addresses the challenge of differentiable rendering, focusing on a novel implementation designed to integrate 3D objects seamlessly into reconstructed 3D environments, thereby creating entirely new perspectives of the scene. Our methodology leverages Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) models to reconstruct the 3D environments with high fidelity, alongside monocular depth estimation algorithms for deriving the 3D characteristics of objects from single images. The main goal of our approach lies in harmonizing the depth map output from the NeRF model with the depth data of the inserted object. This synergy enables the accurate and space-coherent placement of the object within the scene, ensuring a natural integration that enhances the overall realism of the virtual environment. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
